We're taking the new Sonata this weekend on its first real journey. North Jersey down to Virgina for a wedding Friday - then back up to the Jersey shore for the weekend. I normally don't look forward to long drives but I am this time;)

Have fun. :) My first real trip in my 09 GLS was to Buffalo, NY from south Jersey and the ride was smooth and mileage excellent.

I don't know the specs to the 13s, but I was able to get there not only one tank of gas but had enough for a couple of small trips while there. Needless to say I was shocked and impressed.

With that being said, its should be safe to assume that the mpgs should be better with newer technology and the aerodynamics of the car should be even better on gas.

Once again have fun and be safe.

About 98 today in NJ so how much worse can it be:) I'll post my drive experience over the weekend. Looking forward to some impressive MPG as compared with our GMC Acadia we just traded. Although that truck did well on the highway, it was a hog most other times.

I was very impressed with the way that my 2012 GLS handled its first trip. It 'wanted' to go 85-90MPH. Meaning that every time I checked the speed it was inching into that territory and my passenger had no clue that we were going that fast.

It was hot and the AC was on the whole time so I only got 27MPG.

I drive Maryland-to-New Jersey (and back) pretty often, and have done so for about 30 years now. Not quite VA-to-NJ, but the stretch does account for a big chunk of the distance you're talking about.

Be advised that there are ways around several of the tolls you might otherwise encounter along your route. I don't usually bother with some of them, although I invariably bypass the toll at the MD/DE border, since it adds only a couple of minutes to the trip. (Adding less than 5 minutes to my drive time, to save a few bucks, is one thing. But adding 20 minutes to my trip to avoid a $2 toll just isn't worth it to me.)

You can get some details at Avoid Tolls although bear in mind that a lot of the information there is several years out of date. What was a $3 toll in 2007, is often a $4 or $5 toll today.

As for the tolls I don't bother avoiding, well, at least there's E-ZPass. It often makes the difference between being able to cruise though a toll plaza without having to stop (albeit, sometimes having to slow down), and sitting in line for 10 minutes at that same plaza. (Although I live in Maryland, my E-ZPass transponder is from VDOT. [One is free to sign up for E-ZPass from a state other than one's own.] I do hope the proposal to tack on a $1/month fee is turned down. It's the principle of the thing, and so few states still offer E-ZPass without a monthly fee, or a non-refundable transponder deposit.)

Thanks for the heads up - I prefer to stay on the interstates if possible and don't mind the few extra bucks in tolls. My EZP was issued from NY which still doesn't assess the $1/month fee. NJ does - odd.

So we drove down last night - mostly smooth sailing but man, once you get near the Beltway, there's congestion any hour of the day. We sat in B2B traffic around midnight right near the 495/66W intersection. Great drive though - love the ride. Probably averaged around 32/33 MPG doing mainly 70 - 75MPH. Wedding tonight and then back up to the Jersey Shore for the weekend. Have a great weekend everyone.

We ended up skipping the Jersey shore as we did some more sightseeing in VA than originally planned - Great Falls VA today was terrific. Back home in north Jersey. I seemed to do much better in MPG on the trip back. There were stretches where I was averaging 36+ - impressive. Over 2,000 miles on the Sonata already and its barely one month old.
