After replacing the OEM tires at 25,000 I bought new tires at Didcount Tire. Road noise seems louder. Would under coating help and is undercoating recommended by Hyundai?

Discount Tire is always pretty good at exchanging tires. I would go back to them and complain about the tread noise. They should be able to sell you tires that aren't as noisy as the one you bought. May I ask what tires you purchased?

I doubt Hyundai has an official position about undercoating/rustproofing, but most think it probably doesn't do any good on a modern galvanized body car and actually may encourage corrosion by trapping dirt/moisture. It really makes a mess out of the underbody of your car too.

It may slightly dampen road noise but the effect would be minor and not worth the expense.

Installing sound deadening material in the cabin interior (e.g., Dynamat) would probably make a significant improvement, but stripping the interior and installing this is a huge job and adds weight.

Back to the tires, they do vary in road noise quite a bit. Also new tires may quiet some over time. As suggested, if it really bothers you, I'd go back to the tire store and see if they can perhaps get you into a quieter brand without too much expense.

I'm curious about what tires you bought that seem noisy. Tirerack.com has a tire review section where people report how they like their tires and it includes ratings of noise; if you decide to change brands, I'd use this and Discount's people to help you find a quieter tire.

Let's revive an old thread and see if anybody has new information. :D

I haven't make it all the way through the 422 matches on my "noise" search yet.......so I hope this hasn't been covered yet.

Test drove an '11, '12 and '13 Elantra at the dealers last week.
Couldn't honestly see any difference except for the "accessories".
One common thing was ROAD NOISE.

It just happens that the back road leading out of the dealership is just right somehow to bring it out at it's worst. Almost sounds like the calipers are stuck and the pads are scraping at low speeds.
Hankook tires on all 3 cars, I think.

I've had my "new" '12 for 2 days now and the noise isn't nearly as bad on most roads.......but it is more than I remember on ANY of my cars (or trucks even) in the past 20 years. Maybe my memory is failing (entirely possible).

From reading other threads, the fix might be a combination of different tires and some sound deadening in the wheel wells.....so I will probably just live with it.

So the question is: Anybody else notice that and it bothered them enough to try and fix it ??

I have mentioned this road noise problem on other posts. I know they are not 35,000 dollar vehicles. Although Hyundai does have one. I wonder how quiet it is. Its been a problem for I don't know how long with Hyundai vehicles. I don't know if Hyundai has been receiving complaints about it or not. Hyundai owners should be raising you know what with them about it. Complaints should be sent in every day. No excuse for this all these years!! We talk to one another about it on this forum. Give them h---!!! Let them know about it.

While I agree the tire noise is somewhat excessive, particularly on rough pavement, I really don't see what can be gained after the purchase by raising cain with the dealer or the manufacturer. The noise was there when the car was test driven, and the purchase decision was still up to the buyer, because I don't recall anyone forcing us (or others) to make us buy what we now own.

My point being. Hyundai has had this road noise in the past. Don't you think they would have address this problem by now?

I would love to have that level of quiet in the Elantra's package.
Maybe it's a matter of balance.

A little wind noise, a little engine noise, a little exhaust, a little tire/road noise........and you don't notice any single one.

It seems to me that my Elantra is really quiet.......in every respect except tire/road noise. If I crack a window open a bit, I don't notice it near as much. :D

I recently opened a tyre topic on the i30 board, i am on Hankook kinergy tyres and they sound bad on some surfaces.
I had a santa fe before and thinking about it, the engine noise was louder than in the i30(both deisel), so it maybe that missing out on engine noises, makes everything else more prominent.

I managed to reduce a lot of the noises mentioned by insulating the trunk floor area and replacing the shocks with KYBs. I was surprised how much quiter it got and I still have the stock Continentals. Besides for the fact, the KYBs has much better performance than the stock shocks.

On a vacation I rented a Cruze and was quite impressed. It had a softer yet more predictable ride. The handling also wasn't all that bad and pretty nice.
Only large drawback with the Cruze is exiting the car. The forward door jamb blocks exit and it results in having you to pull and leverage yourself out of the car. Somewhat of a real nusiance as I don't have that in the Elantra.
