Replacing The Stock Horn

OK so as many of you already noticed, the stock horn leaves a lot to be desired. This is a "how to" on changing the horns....

First off you need the replacements... I chose Hella Supertones.
http://www.fixthisride.com/showproductdeta...p?prod_id=89724

And then a little electrical know how. First off, remove the front grille. There are 6 plastic screw looking clips at the top of the grille insert (circled in RED). Just give them a quarter turn counterclockwise and they should let loose.

Then work your way to the actual bumper cover and remove the two 10mm bolts (1 on each side) (circled in green)

And now is where you have to be extra careful not to pull too hard and crack the paint....

Lift the two corners of the front bumper cover over the tabs and gently pull the grille insert away from the radiator, pulling here...

reach your hand down in the gap and remove the 4 screws. Located behind the grille roughly where i circled in blue...

It is pretty easy with this tool..

once the 4 screws are removed the grille insert should just pull out towards you. leaving this...

notice the single stock 110dB horn :( Remove that. It has a black clip at the bottom with a release tab. Once removed, throw away horn or keep for later. install BOTH of the new horns on the same original mounting stud. I used blue medium strength loctite to secure the extra load.

NOW the fun begins. This part (the wiring)can be done MANY different ways so i am going to leave this section somewhat vague. I ohmed out the stock connector and to my surprise, the green wire was actually not ground. It is the hot/positive lead. and the black is negative. I didn't want to cut or splice into the stock wiring so i rigged up a connector. i took a forked lug connector and cut off one of the forks

These fit perfectly into the stock connector. Make sure to do a thourough but tidy electrical tape job so that none of the wires short and so that no bare metal is showing. Remeber this is where all the rain and puddle water goes. You don't want this to get all wet and corrode. A wiring diagram for the Automotive relay and the actual relay both come with the horns. Follow the wiring diagram. I believe it's diagram 2b with these particular horns. I'm not going to explain the exact wiring because it should be done by someone that can read a diagram, and i don't want to be responsible if someone doesn't fully understand my explanation and does permanent damage. But i will say it's very easy. Once done wiring the relay, run the last 2 wires back to the battery and use cable ties to neaten up the area... I also used wire loom to make it look completely stock-like

i took the last 2 wires,in loom, to the battery and attached them to the terminal. The black wire is barely noticeable on the battery and the red is completely covered by the plastic terminal cover. To keep consistent with being neat.

This is my first DIY, so if there are any improvements you would like me to make, i will try, and yes, i know it is somewhat vague in parts, but like i said, the parts that are left out should be common sense, and if they aren't i don't want to be responsible for your mistakes. Hope this helps!!

Before 110dB
After 120dB
A world of difference

I asked Hyundai on the Owners web site about a horn recall. Their response was, no recall, nor did I really expect anything.
Maybe they will at least have a replacement of better sound quality available for purchase in the future.
Tried it out on a lonely road yesterday, OMG, wife says, I can't hardly hear it.

Sure the tone of the horn is wimpy, but it's a huge safety issue because it's just plain not loud. I got in the car next to my wifes and she honked the horn, with the radio on low I couldn't hear the horn at all.

It's just a matter of time before someone sues Hyundai over the horn not preventing an accident because other drivers couldn't hear it. They need to man up and fix this now.

Maybe we should start a class action lawsuit? :D

Found a better way. Sorry I did not use a photo sharing site to upload photos I took. Disconnected battery and left hood up for light. Jacked car up on the passenger side, using frame of the car. Almost to the point where the tire broke the ground. This gives plenty of room beneath car. Below bumper is a plastic cover. Two inboard plastic screws and two outboard small metal bolts. Unscrew and remove cover. You are able to look right up at the horn. Through the grille use ten millimeter socket and extension remove nut holding horn. Horn wiring is routed downward. With a little effort you can remove plastic clip that holds wiring harness so horn can drop down below bumper. Unplug horn, tape connector with electrical tape. Cut back harness housing a few inches. I used PIAA Sports Horn set, two horns. I used snap connectors to connect both positive wires together and also to connect both negative together leaving enough wire, a few inches to use snap connectors to tap into factory wiring. That simple. Even if you don't use Piaa horns, you don't mess with the grille or bumper.

I have just reported a complaint to NHTSA....I suggest everyone on this board do the same. After enough complaints are logged Hyundai will infact jump on the issue especially if NHTSA sees enough complaints.

please everyone go to

www.NHTSA.com

Click on file a complaint, it takes no more than five min....explain a brief story of why you are complaining about the horn. Even if you make up a nice little story I'm sure with enough complaints NHTSA will step up and so will Hyundai since there main concern is safety.

Good Luck and happy Hyundai.

Better is relative. It sounds like an option, but i wouldn't call cutting the harness back, a "good" idea. And if you don't manhandle the grille, it's much easier to acces the horn and wiring from above, no jack required or laying on your back. But it's nice to know it can be done from below though, for those who aren't completely comfortable with a screwdriver, removing the grille.

What really upset me was the alarm horn. It is a completely separate horn if anyone thinks replacing the factory horn will make your alarm louder. I spent $25 an 10 minutes upgrading the factory horn to a Hella SuperTones single horn, and I bolted the OEM Factory horn in place of the Alarm horn. Now, my horn is much more ballsy and my alarm horn is beefer to. Thanks for the step by step grille removal though, those 4 phillips head screws are tough to see, but a good scew driver knocked em out quickly.

Where is the alarm horn??
It's in the engine bay on the passenger strut tower. Very easy to see and access. It's a 2-1/2" Disc horn.

I'm alittle confused on the wiring part of installing a new horn. Anyone have a little more detailed description of the wiring part? Is it possible to just add on a low tone horn to the stock horn and not have a relay?
If you are using a single low tone horn you don't need a relay. It's a two wire hook-up. The dual horns need more power.

You said you just used one Hella Supertones horn. Is that loud enough? I checked online n the Hella Supertones come with 2 horns. Sorry for being a noob who knows nothing of electronics hehe

After almost being side-swiped yesterday I'm thinking it can be louder. I heard some of the wolo horns and I'm going to exchange my low tone Hella for 1 low-tone and 1 high tone Wolo horn. You can buy two from Amazon for $22.78. There is no way I'm going to spend $70 on dual Hella horns.

I'm going to make a Y-adapter and run them off the factory wiring at first. I don't forsee problems with factory fuse or wire capacity, if i need more power I'll hook up a relay.

Here is what i am getting. They are rated at 115db at 360Hz and 420Hz. The link has a demo of what they sound like. Not as powerful as the hella, but an improvement over OEM.

O I see. Can you tell me how it goes after you are done with your setup and if you needed to hook a relay to the horns or not. Thanks

Oh No, so it appears to be just one big marketing scheme since they announced replacing the horns well before April 20
I've had that same thought. Although it seems like they'd get in trouble for saying there were going to do something and then not doing it.

Another possibility is they're using up their inventory of the current horns before putting in better horns.
