I have a 2006 CDX with the 2.2 diesel engine and I thought some of you may be interested in the results of finding and fitting a replacement radio unit. I spent some days on the Internet (I'm retired so time is no problem for me!). I eventually found a company in China who had a range of units which fitted individual cars as "plug and play" with no wire cutting involved. I had the choice between an RDS unit complete with DVD and GPS or another one (WD6001) which had a better specification including iPod control:

• 6.2 inch in-dash Two Din TFT touch screen (480x234)
• 3D graphic menu
• Steering control function to match with the car's steering wheel control
• Built-in AM/FM radio; 30 stations storable (but non-RDS)
• Built-in analogue TV (no use for me in the West Country from May this year!)
• Automatic PAL/NTSC
• DVD/CD/MP3 CD player
• Built-in Bluetooth for connection of mobile phone
• Built-in GPS satellite navigation (runs from the micro SD card) – can have navigation and music at the same time (but see my comments later)
• USB interface (for connection of USB thumb drives or USB drives)
• Micro SD card slot on front face
• One channel AUX Video input, two channel Video output
• Rear view parking camera input
• 45W x 4 MAX power output
• iPod connector
• Dimmer function for night driving mode
I decided on the latter as I had already decided to purchase a DAB radio for the car which would make the RDS feature largely redundant. More on that later!
I guess my major concern was the removal of the dashboard trim to access the current radio - however I shouldn't have worried as a forum member helpfully explained the procedure carefully and even sent me an instruction sheet!
So to ordering the unit. I purchased it direct from the manufacturer (www.szwaywell.com) - I was able to have all my concerns satisfied in advance as I had a MSN Messenger type communication with them for some days before I committed. They were extremely helpful and explained that there would be absolutely no wires to cut as the ISO/DIN connection to the current radio simply unplugs and the new one plugs into the same block, and that all the steering wheel controls would operate as before.
The cost of the unit was 360 USDollars plus $70 for shipping to UK. I ordered it and they shipped it at 1pm on a Saturday (UK time). I was given a DHL link to see it as it moved to Hong Kong Airport, then Heathrow Airport, then the DHL centre in the East Midlands, then my local DHL centre in Exeter. And I could hardly believe it when it was delivered at 10.00am on the Monday morning, less than 36 hours after it was shipped. I thought I had beaten HM Customs & Excise but they sent a bill for the duty and tax at a later date!
I have attached some pictures showing the unit as it was delivered and during and after fitting.
Fitting - I began by removing the 2 screws holding the small glove box above the clock so that I could then see the old radio. I then followed the instructions from the forum member to unclip the dashboard trim and it went exactly as one would hope with no damage being inflicted on the "wood" and plastic trim. Then it was just a case of unscrewing the bolts holding the old radio, unclipping the power/connection block and then offering up the new unit. This was simple and in no time (well, maybe an hour as I went VERY slowly) the new unit was fitted and I tested the functions before I clipped the dashboard trim back in place.
Am I pleased with the result? From an aesthetic viewpoint it is as close to perfect as is possible to get - the silver colour matches the existing trim, even the blue lighting colour is a close match to the existing blue lighting of the other buttons. Everyone who has seen it has remarked that it looks as though it was designed by Hyundai as an original fitment.
How does it perform? Well the biggest problem I had was the GPS satnav and I thought I'd made a mistake buying it at first! As I said earlier you can choose which GPS satnav system you want supplied (the unit runs WINCE 5 and any system compatible with that works OK - in theory!). It actually runs the software which is on the micro SD card. I opted for TomTom as this was the satnav system I had on my current dashtop unit. Well that was a big mistake! It transpired that it is impossible to set the Regional settings in TomTom so the local time (time of arrival etc) is wrong. Doh! So more searching of Forums (especially www.gpsunderground.com) and I found that a more suitable system would be iGO8 and all the software is available on the site together with maps of the world. I have installed v8.3.2 and that includes maps of UK dated November 2008 and I even have speed camera warnings (ÂŁ17 p.a. at www.pocketgpsworld.com) and Text To Speech ability as well.
What are the problems? It may be my installation but I have a very slight whine when the unit is on (and there is volume on the unit). It is not speed dependent i.e. it does not get louder or change if I rev the engine. It is not noticeable when you are driving – only standing still. I have booked it in the see a "radio doctor" in Exeter next week to see if he can solve it – perhaps it may be something as simple (LOL) as a choke.
The other comment is not a problem as such but when I am using the satnav and the radio for example, I would prefer the satnav screen to be visible all the time and the radio sound be replaced by the satnav instructions. As it is I get the radio screen all the time and the radio is muted and the satnav instructions and the satnav screen appear only when a turning or something occurs. I'm not sure I've explained that very well but I hope you can understand? It's not a problem and I have reported it to the manufacturer to see if a firmware upgrade could alter it. If not, c'est la vie!
Other than that I am delighted with the Waywell unit and can highly recommend it (no connection with the manufacturer!).
Once it was all fitted I then decided to fit the DAB radio and the reversing camera. I purchased the PURE Highway radio and made use of the aux. input connection in the Waywell rather than relying on the FM transmission to send the signal from the Highway. That way you get a solid signal. I fitted the unit itself into the box between the front seats and even using the arm supplied it fits perfectly. The beauty of fitting it there is that it is never on display in the car. I purchased a proper DAB magnetic aerial and the reception is perfect so long as it is not a dead DAB area. I find it better than RDS as it has all the benefits of DAB i.e. constant buffering of programmes so you can rewind live radio or indeed pause live radio to catch any traffic reports or news bulletins you may have missed.
Fitting the reversing camera was rather more tricky as you have to run 2 wires from the camera – one signal and one power wire. I tapped into the reversing light power wire in the tailgate and carefully ran the wires forward. It is hardly noticeable. I fitted the camera just above the number plate.

I have successfully installed my Cartek DVD/Navi to my 2009 Santa fe.
using the Metra 70-7303 Wire Harness.
it is straight forward, wires are identical for the 16 pin but the 20 pin only had 1 wire which was useless as it does not connect anywhere as far as i can tell from the diagram.
Will post picture when i can.

I used the IGO8 map, which load up. (if you need the link; as it is a big file, send me a tell)
I just made the GPS work :p was using the wrong frequency band.
So far, its a success, everything work nicely.
Dual mode, gps while i listen to music /radio.

Thanks but the problem is not solved.
With a blank formatted sd card in fat32 the waywell stay in the sd menu, but if i put a mp3 file, it crash
Are you using a 2gig or 4gig?

4gig SD isn't supported with the Navi/dvd from what i understood.
and it doesn't matter if its fat 16 or fat 32 partition.
cause i can use both with ease.
But max i am using is 2gig SD.

Sorry, didn't have time to get everything setup, i'll post the picture on the weekend coming up, been busy with wife Bday.
Wel,l after some tinkering and connections, I was able to get everything working, the hard part would be the GPS IGO8, finding the file, testing over and over till you get it right.
and working on the SYS.txt file.
Thumb UP - GPS is working at 480x237 resolution, 2d view, 3d view. Which was the main thing for me.
Make sure you get the right frequency added to the SYS.txt file or you won't get GPS to connect.
Tested Video, good as you have it downloaded through USB, SD card, and DVD player.
Tested MP3 on USB pen, it give a list of files which you can select to play.
haven't tested IPOD - since i didn't have 1, but cable is ready.
haven't tested bluetooth - didn't have time yet to set it up.
Volume control is good.
Overall 2 THUMB UP on what it can do.
Touch screen that come with a pen if you got huge finger

How easy is it to use? if you are the type that like to press button and play around, you'll get it in 5-10 min.
If you are the type that read the manual, hmmm... there is a a few more feature you can try on it, specially when u use the remote control that came with it.

The Cartek Navigation system - PM me if if you need the info on who to purchase it from, cause i do recommend them if you use the Metra Wire Harness 70-7303 and radio antenna adapter 40-KI11 to convert it (For 2009 Santa Fe model only)
(it come with GPS antenna, Ipod connector, USB connector, CDC AV in, CCD AV in, AUX AV in, 4 audio out, remote control,-( for some features that can't be pressed on the radio button).
The only thing it does not have...XM radio/Sirus, (but its a waste money IMO)
Cost 300$ US+ 50$US shipping + 30-40$ US for Wire Harness.
Canadian price (500$ estimated)

NOW, 1 remaining thing i missed and don't know where to get this info.
There is a pin connector that connect the steering wheel control to the DVD/Navi system...Can someone who know, please let me know (if possible with the wiring diagram displayed on page 22) which pin i'll need to insert it.
Manual for the Cartek show that i can use 1 of the extra wire Green/white to connect it to the steering wheel and use the Carket Remote control to set it up.
There was couple more wires that i didn't use cause i think they were for the Back camera and such.
(I just found out which pin Connectors are needed to connect the steering wheel control, and BOOM i have full volume/channel/mode access again.)
Some pin insert will be needed to the wire harness.

Hi kiramoon,

How is your dual mode function? Stay in radio/music screen and temporary switch to GPS whenever there is a message/alert from GPS, or GPS running in foreground (i.e. it stays on GPS screen) while radio/music play in background (does not switch to radio/music screen)?

You can have it either way, stay in radio/music mode, and when GPS need you to do something, it'll switch over automatically then switch back if there is no other activity.
Or stay in GPS mode while listening to music in the background; since i had the gps voice that tell you when to switch lane or exit, it mute the music, GPS voice will tell you what/where to go next, Then music come back.

Try unplugging the whole dvd/navi system and leave it off for 3 hour for a full reset, it was mentioned in the VW model of Waywell, which isn't very different in term of display and menu.

I was finally able to solve the GPS problem in my Waywell unit. Of course there was no response to my email from our friend Frank at Waywell! An MSD GPS chipset update zip file is available on the Internet which updates the firmware from 3.17 to 3.24 and this solves the time problem completely. I had to edit the ini file (which is one of the 4 files supplied in the zip) to COM1 and 9600 Baud (the default is COM2 and 4800) but once that was done I had the correct time again. Thanks to rantipole and also to josi who pointed me in the right direction as he had had the same problem on a similar Waywell unit and this gave me the confidence to try it. :liebe011:

Just a thought, have you tried holding the band button when in radio mode, to see if the map comes up? Later firmware was what we were looking for a while ago to try to get dual mode? Could you give us a link to the update? I sold my earlier unit to someone who will probably need it.

Nice thought! However the firmware update is only for the GPS chipset and doesn't affect the rest of the unit. I have uploaded the files to:

http://www.adrive.com/public/455e5bc6dbfe7...004b369c4c.html
http://www.adrive.com/public/385f009ebf041...de24274b1e.html

One very important step is to check what COM port the unit uses (mine is COM1) and what Baud rate (mine is 9600). These values then need to be changed in the ini file else the update will not work.

Thats a newer OS/application then what most people have, Previous versions only have 1 band, couldn't listen to music while in GPS mode.
Unless i get in the OS, i am not sure how to view the version. Since its using Windows CE5, there got to be a way.

Man, this Navigation is addictive, ever since i got it working, i haven't stop playing with it.
I've been driving long trips, "ask me to go anywhere, and i'll probably go".
Listening to Video Music, Movies, MP3...crazy FUN stuff.
IMO, This thing can get you to stay awake driving for hours...i've tried so far 4 hour driving and didn't even noticed the drive.
It can get your attention at times but nothing that would alarm your driving...(only base on my exp and driving) can't say for others.

I had my kid and nephews staring at my screen the whole way; makes me think if i should add a display in the back of my headrests.

Thanks for the clarification, now I know how to get it works the way I wanted it to be.

- To keep the GPS screen on all the time, first launch your GPS S/W (if it is not set to autorun), then switch to radio/USB/CD mode, press and hold the BAND button for ~ 3 seconds. GPS will be in the foreground while radio/usb/cd will be in the background

- To show the radio/USB/CD screen/interface, start your radio/USB/CD first, then change the mode to GPS, press and hold the BAND button for ~ 3 seconds. Radio/USB/CD interface will be shown, and GPS screen will cut in whenever there is a change of GPS event (speed warning, lane change, junction and etc) and switch back to radio/USB/CD screen once the event is over.

Nothing, i think the problem is in the card reader.
Did you know if i can use the gps card reader for storage/playing m3 files?

How well does it fit and line up with the dash? I noticed on the pictures that it seems the bottom curve doesn't quite line up. Is that right?
I used the original frame to fit it, the holes aren't exactly at the same locations, so it does stick out a bit, like 2-5 MM.
Was too lazy to drill holes in the frame and to buy another frame...unless i find a local dealer somewhere.
If anyone know a local dealer/store that sell wire harness, frame...etc. Please let me know.
I've got a lot of people eyeing my navigation and wanting one.
