I am interested in replacing the door handles for my next mod. I do not want to put the sticker chrome covers on, I want to replace the door handles. Shark has a set of 4 for 70.00. Anyone know what this entails? I assume you need to take the door apart to do this.. any tips, pointers or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Has anybody compared the difference between the the chrome door handle overlays and the actual chrome handles? Can you see a difference when they are assembled?

I think you can replace the outer handles with out removing the door panels?

See this Technical Service Bulletin...page 5, Job #8................Good Luck

Chris read the bulletin through, See page 5, line # 10. READ THERE where you only have to open the door, remove jam rubber plug, remove screw then handle assembly. AND NOT REMOVING THE DOOR PANELS.
Ok, that's better. Perhaps I will try..Thanks for your guidance!.

You probably should have specifically said what part of the PDF document to go to... :)

For what it's worth, removing the door panels only takes 5 minutes once you've done it before.

I'm just glad he knew where to look, thanks again

Hi,

I've done the mod a while back and haven't been reading the forums lately. You do not have to remove the door panels, it is just a black plastic piece you have to take out on the side of the door, then unscrew the handle from this tiny hole. I'll see if I can take pics of how it looks like, the tricky part is taking a long screw driver and not letting the screw fall inside the door panel, if it does, then you will have to remove the panel and search for the screw (very tricky and I've been through that, not the best thing in the world).

I’m looking to go the other way and have my chrome door handles painted to match the body color. I was originally going to buy a replacement set as they are not that expensive but then I remembered the buttons on the front doors that I don’t think some models have. Has anyone had their chrome handles painted and if so how much did it cost?

I don't even know how you would go about painting on chrome.

But for one, why would you want to get rid of the chrome? I guess this is personal preference, but I think the chrome looks really sharp and gives it a luxery look. Well, to each his own.

You shouldn't have an issue buying a replacement set of already painted door handles, to match the color of your car. From what I understand the button on the door handle of the limited version replaces the key hole on the GLS version. It shouldn't be an issue. I would check with Shark Racing if they can order pre-painted handles for you, or check with your dealership (though Shark Racing tends to be cheaper).

why don't the two posters on here swap out their handles? one would lose the unlock/lock button...but, easier and cheaper for both parties involved and they both get their desired looks. of course, they'd have to drive around for few days with at least one window down so they could enter the car!

Ive become spoiled with the little buttons so no chance of getting rid of them
You wouldn't have to get rid of the little buttons. The button should stay attached to the car when you remove the handles, and the replacement handle would have a hole for the button, so you wouldn't lose the button functionality. What the fear24 is saying is that you'll have to leave a window open so that you could somehow pull the door open. With no handle attached you wouldn't be able to open the door, even when the car is unlocked, except to pry the door open with a flathead screwdriver (or something similar, which would probably damage the car.

On a separate note, has anybody ever applied the chrome handle overlays (what the original poster said he did not want to do). I am considering these because they are a little cheaper, but more importantly because it is a simple mod that does not require taking the door apart and messing with the mechanics of the door handle. Does anybody have a Harbor Grey with silver handles? Can you post photos (or if a photo is available online). I'd like to see how they stand out, if possible.

Hmm....why can't I edit my message?? Very odd. way, correction to my previous post, if using a GLS handle on a Limited vehicle (with a button on the handle) wouldn't work because of the button functionality. I thought the button was in the keyhole, but looking at more photos it is not.

I would however still like to get some detail on the chrome handle overlays, if any one has done it before.

So I've done a few chrome mods. Chrome mirror and handle overlays, and wheel fender accents. A few things to disclose, this chrome is all plastic. When I first got it in the mail I was a bit surprised. I guess some people, myself included, expect chrome to be metal, given it shiny characteristics. I guess there is metallic chrome, but this stuff is plastic. I think the chrome on the actual car is plastic (though I haven't really looked). All of my chrome stuff came from eBay, directly from Korea. Shipping wasn't that long....2 weeks tops for regular mail. Including shipping, I paid $69 for the wheel fender. trim, $23 for the handles, and $44 for the mirrors. I think they were all a little on the pricey side, given the fact they are just shiny plastic, but it is what it is. So each of these pieces come with double sided tape, to help you mount these items onto your car. I also applied spray adhesive to make sure they aren't going anywhere, and they are on there solid. I've very pleased with how everything turned out, and would recommend anyone looking to do something special for their car. The only little 'irk' of mine comes with the handles. The handles are just overlays, so they can cover the interior of the handle (given the way physics work). So the issue is that when you use the handles, you can feel where the chrome ends and where the actual handle is. It sortof scratches the palm of your hand. Very minor issue, and isn't a deal breaker. If you are mechanically included and have the extra funds (only $70), I'd recommend actual chrome handles.

I've attached some before and after photos do give you an idea of how everything changed.
