No message posted to Hyundai dealer site to dealers as of 10-17-2015 @ 1325 hr about idea having a spring recall..

Recall applicable to VIN, vehicle age, current owner, total mileage not of any concern for an applicable recall

Until it announced to dealer with a starting date, and initial supplies, instructions for inspection-replacement, labor time sent to dealer, dont jump the gun yet..

I had a TSB on a Honda Odyssey for the front coil springs for the very same reason. It did not make it to a recall but should have. I broke a coil spring while at city speeds. I heard a bang then a metallic rattling but no real notice in driving feel. I promptly stopped and found a sharp 6-inch piece of the top of the coil spring hanging on the brake line! I used the opportunity to replace coils springs, struts and stabilizer links for the front.

I'm at the dealer, now. They say the same thing as the letter. "No remedy available right now " Although the website lists two possible remedies. Either replace the springs,or instal a protective sleeve on the spring. I mentioned that to the service advisor. He said he hasn't been informed of either remedy.
I inspected the springs last night, and there doesn't appear to be any corrosion at all, on them. I guess I'll just wait for further instructions.

I had the recall work done today. The repair took less than an hour, and I also had an oil change, done. The repair order said " frt coil springs tube install". I took a look at it when I got home and can't really see anything that looks "new". Has anyone else have this done, yet? I'm just curious as to what the procedure is.

Should see a light blue urethane tube on the bottom of coil spring

#20 ·
Thanks for the quick reply. I looked again and I don't find any evidence that the work was done. No blue tube, and the area is very dirty. I took a couple pictures. It was hard to get the camers in such a tight space, so i'm nt sure the angle is correct. I'm starting to get alittle ticked off.

Appears you did not get recall done as directed by Hyundai Motor USA.. what does your invioce reflect on the job line for the recall ??

If they claimed they did work and seek reimburse from Hyundai, then they ripping ofF HMA, and failing to do recall as directed

Take it to Gerald there in Aurora, and explain your situation, or maybe Elgin ? Have receipt to show them failure so they can correct and charge back the offending dealer..

So I took the car to another dealer, and they confirmed that the work was not done. They suggested that I return to the original dealer, since they couldn't double charge the recall work. I called before I went in, and explained the situation.
When I arrived, they said, that they questioned the tech that was supposed to do the work. He stated that he didn't do it, because there were aftermarket parts on the car. (Struts were replaced ) He never told the service manager, though. They were very apologetic, and the work is being completed,as I type this.

Broken spring

Well, This happened on my lunch hour today. I heard a noise on the way in this morning, but after looking couldn't find an issue. Went out to lunch and hit a bump in the road, and POP..clang, clang, clang.. this part was bouncing down the road behind me. I called Hyundai after reading about the recall, and I am 2 months past the "date" they will cover. The dealer quoted me $529.00 to replace both of the front springs. I am not overly happy and not sure what to do? I'd like to try and press Hyundai to fix it, but not sure how long I can drive around with a broken spring??

Thoughts??

Man! That really sucks! I wouldn't drive it at all! Get it to an independent shop and get it fixed. You could then go after Hyundai for reimbursement. Ask the shop to return the old springs to you, just in case Hyundai wants to inspect them.
At least the tire wasn't damaged, and you didn't wreck! Good luck!

2012 Elantra Not Covered but Should It?

I just had a front coil spring on my '12 Elantra Ltd. (45K miles) break the other day while doing over a speed bump in front of my place of employment, a speed bump I've traveled over for a couple of years now. I always slow down to between 5 to 10 mph before going over any speed bump. The broken coil in turn caused the driver's side strut to rub up against the tire and caused a blow out. Total cost to repair the damages were $1,350 for new coils, struts, link pins, sway bar, tire and labor, plus another $40 for the tow to my mechanic.

However my year Elantra isn't covered under this recall. I live in the salt belt here in Ohio. Do you think I have a good warranty claim with Hyundai? Will they say I was going too fast or blame my employer for the speed bump?

Ok...

The broken coil in turn caused the driver's side strut to rub up against the tire and caused a blow out.
Broken coil wont make strut rub tire for blow out.. broken spring end got into tire...

You going to have issues getting anykind of refund from Hyundai repairs.. broken spring been covered if taken to dealer, Hyundai Motor will not cover remainder, as a simple broken sping may or may not damage tire,, but to claim 2 struts, links, springs and a sway bar.. not going to happen.. then to submit PA request, we need pics of broken parts, a list of parts needed to repair, and then the bean counters at Hyundai decide if they going to cover

However my year Elantra isn't covered under this recall. I live in the salt belt here in Ohio.
Ok..

Do you think I have a good warranty claim with Hyundai?
I will venture not now,, you fail to tow to dealer for evaluation, where did the replacement parts come from ??,,, Hyundai factory parts, or Auto Zone ?? Do you have all the old parts in trunk for dealer to inspect ?
I suspect best you will do is the broken spring.. struts, no,, links,, no..

All the springs I seen break will either just lower car a bit, or spring shift and either end of spring, or broken remnant nail the tire, and maybe mark the inside of wheel.. never seen strut damage..

Keep us advised as to how situation goes with dealer and Hyundai Motor

So I took my car to the dealer that I am not a big fan of, but it's the closest. They submitted a PA request as SBR711 said, and they approved the repair. I will be dropping my car off Monday, and they will get me a loaner while they are doing the repair. So, I'm happy that I don't have to pay for the repair, but I hope they get it fixed without issue. Just thought I'd update my progress.

#34 ·
Just as I posted.. did you have to tell them to submit a PA request, or did they know how to handle situation in the first place ??

Spring break on a UD/MD Elantra, Hyundai should remedy the replacement, even if it is not in their claimed VIN range / production date criteria..

#37 ·
Seen more Elantra spring break,, but we have has a Sonata or 2 I think,, they wasnt any of my assigned jobs.. we have had maybe 3 or 4 broken Elantra spring this month maybe already.. was told springs for them on back order last week

Coil spring broke on wife's 2011 Elantra yesterday. Slicing tire completely open. Had the recall repaired last year!! And still failed! Local Hyundai dealer here in Nova Scotia, Canada are replacing both front springs and tow at no charge.
Ppl need to be aware.....even after the recall repair.....spring still failed.
We are very fortunate that it wasn't a high speed blowout!

Dont think you should have had to pay for repair.. hit the hotline

@sbr711 Bumping an old thread but a co-worker of mine had this happen Wednesday. 2012 Elantra Limited, 100,000+ miles, passenger front spring broke, shredded the tire. I understand the recall was for the 2011 model year, but with springs breaking on so many other models and with all the other issues Hyundai is going through, do you think there's a decent shot that he can get this repair covered by Hyundai?

Ask dealer service people to take pics and submit a "PA Request"..
