Rear Washer Leaking Inside Hatchback Window Grrrrrrr

A while back I noticed the rear window washer wasn't spraying much water onto the window, then found water inside the boot (trunk) and saw there was water dripping onto the parcel shelf when I operated the rear washer and wiper.

As the car was only 6 months old at that time I didn't go fiddling around with things, thought I'd best wait until the 15,000 km service was due, which was today.

When I brought it in for the service I told the Man it was leaking. At pick up time he said they didn't find any leaks so I put the washer and wiper on and after a few seconds there was water dripping inside the rear window. So the car went back in to the mechanics who took out the plastic stoplight lens and after a few minutes the Man said that the plastic around where the water comes out was cracked.

OK, well fix it then I said. He felt it was unlikely that Hyundai would consider this a warranty issue. He agreed there was no other damage around the area and that I couldn't have caused this by backing into anything but I would need to buy a whole new lens.

It is now Friday evening and he won't be asking Hyundai about this until Monday morn.

In the meantime has anybody else had such a thing happen?

If this isn't fixed under warranty I will become Mr. Nasty.

This should be covered under warranty, I did a work for some velosters with that condition similar to yours ( all water instead or going to the glass was all over the inside) sometimes the hoses are too stretch and with water pressure they get loose.

Mine did the same thing.
Thanks, good to know. It may be a design problem - and therefore could keep happening to me or others.

Apart from opening and closing the hatch now and then and using the washer/wiper occasionally I haven't exactly overused or overstressed the broken part.

Yes, I'm quite capable of buying a new lens and replacing it myself, or more true to form I would repair the break with some clear epoxy but dammit, one of the main reasons I bought my first ever new car was the 5 year warranty offered by Hyundai. This episode is a test of faith for Hyundai, and the dealer.

I'll let ya's know what happens on Monday.

Seems like you fell victim to a technicality. As I feel for your frustration all warranties are pretty clear about coverage. If its broken, cracked, torn ect. than its not covered. Waiting 15,000 km too does help you argument either. I would say you have a 50/50 shot that you won't have to buy it. Hyundai most likely wont cover the lens but there is a chance that your selling dealer may goodwill it to you. I wouldn't even try going to another dealer than the selling one. They will tell you to shovel sand

i think that is under the 12k warranty

The dealer said Hyundai would not replace this under warranty. If it had happened within the first few days of ownership they may have considered it a warranty issue but not after 6 months. Apparently they said there was no way anybody could know if the plastic part wasn't physically damaged somehow.

I decided that was actually reasonable, and not worth the hassle of making it a big deal. I'm going to use some marine epoxy and if not successful will buy a new part - the dealer said they would not charge me to fit the new part.

It's Easter after all, let peace, love and happiness prevail I just did an 800 km drive today without a hiccup, love this little car.

IMO thats such a load of crap! How would you exactly damage that yourself without some noticeable evidence you had removed trim to get to it. My dealership straight away told me they would repair the damaged pipe but still unclear about the damage done to the carpets. I would be fighting them on it.

Also I would like to mention that I am all for fixing little problems like this myself too and normally I would. But as it has damaged my carpet Im leaving it for the dealership to fix to they will hopefully replace it or at least dry clean it to get rid of the smell which I can only describe as smelly feet

I've been out of town for a week and during that time managed to pull apart the stoplight assembly and make a good workable repair to my problem. Gave it a good test on a 800 km drive back home today.

Easter is over and I'm back to my normal self again and feeling rather angry that Hyundai hasn't accepted responsibility for this component failure.

Here's a little web page which I will be using to make a formal complaint to my dealer and to Hyundai. Thought the Forum may like to see what I'm up to -
