Hey guys! The door lock operates, I can hear it click and I can see it move but the door does not release. I've tried using the inside door handle to open it - still no good. Has anyone heard of this?

I've tried pushing, pulling, using the remote to open/close, use the manual lock to open/close - nothing is working. The inside handle feels like it is not connected at all. The outside handle feels like it is trying to function.

The dealer is planning to cut the door handles off both inside and outside of the car to try to figure it out and my appointment is scheduled for next Thursday. :frown:

SOLVED.

Here is your fix... I just did this on our 2010 Veracruz.

From the inside: use a screwdriver to pry/break off the plastic lock part (the piece that rotates when you lock/unlock the door). The cable that hooks to this is what's actually bound up due to this piece being broken - it isn't actually unlocking). Once that is broken off, you can use some needle nose pliers to pull the cable (has a plastic white "T" connector on the end of it) toward the door hinges and simultaneously use the lever to open the door.

Remove the door cover panel and replace the plastic handle assembly. 1 screw on the upper hinge side (pry off the 1/4" plastic center piece, which exposes the screw), one screw on the upper opposing side (same cover piece hides the screw), and one screw located behind the plastic plate located inside of the handle assy (the plate pops off by prying it off with a tiny screwdriver).

Handle assy part# is 82620 3J000WS (RH) or 82610 J000WS (LH). These parts are the same on the front and rear. The genuine Hyundai parts for this are available for cheap via Amazon! Here is a pair (LH and RH) for $12.43
Disclaimer: I am not at all affiliated with the seller.

The assy comes off and on with 5 silver philips screws on the inside of the door panel. Pay close attention to how the cables hook up when you're removing it! Reassemble and voila - fixed.

We have a 2016 Tuscon Eco
First the front passenger door stopped opening every once and a while unless you pulled it 3 times to open...
Then the back passenger doors would not open from the outside...Took it to Hyundai who said they could not replicate the issue on the front passenger door ...
But was able to offer this ridiculous offer of fix 1 door for 400$ or all doors for 800$ ... wtf?

So now one back passenger door will not open from outside or inside (driver side) and the other passenger doors do not open on the outside.

We called Hyundai corporate and they said we were outside of 60K warranty (we live in rural part of oregon so we drive a lot)...
We were not able to get a manager or anyone on the phone after they "looked into it" as they said this was the end of the line "have a good day"

Ok .. so we called the Vehicle safety hotline and they opened a claim...please do this as this needs to be recalled.
This is not normal wear and tear issue and it is a safety issue...

The issue will come back again even after repair since they are not fixing the actual issue.

Next we are opening a claim with the Department of Justice (which also will investigate same as the Vehicle Safety )

We will never purchase another Hyundai,
Unfortunate because we actually bought it for the warranty and basically have been screwed the whole time.
We were also shown how well the door feels when shutting it when we purchased it... it was a little heavier and seemed to be able to hold up to things more than a mazda did... again we should have known better.

Horrible customer service.

@DaleL
Do you know if that part works on 2016 Tuscon's?

I will be reporting them.. Everything is going on this car just outside the warranty, so disappointed.

Remove weather strip from the inside completely off then start popping panel off get an L shape trim tool and lift from top of panel while pulling from bottom and you should be able to see everything and pop door open
Had a similar issue, inside handle wouldn't open the door despite child lock being off. Outside handle worked fine. But in my case that door had been damaged (by the wife) and repaired.
Dealer reconnected something and it worked for a few months, second time they just replaced the lock assembly entirely (under warranty). Been fine ever since.
Remove weather strip from the inside completely after start pulling door panel off and with an L shape trim tool lift from top while pulling from bottom and it should release and you then can get to latch assembly

I will be reviewing this car every where online I can.. so disappointed.

If everyone will file a complaint here... File a Vehicle Safety Complaint | Safercar.gov | NHTSA they may do a recall and be forced to fix the problem.
Yup. We have filed a couple. People please file a complaint!

We ended up paying 1100$ for 3 doors . 1 of the doors would not open at all.

The driver door was the only door that they said "looks fine" . Which I think is amazing because think about it,
if the doors are on a warranty based off mileage wouldn't you think the driver door would be used the most?

Anyway, 3 hours and the dealer ship called stating WE were going to have to take it to a body shop to have them break into the door that could not open
LMAO I was just about to tell them they are lucky they didn't do the other doors first because I will be damned I am paying to fix a safety issue and you STILL WANT ME TO FIX IT...WTF?

As I was about to rip them up the guy says WAIT WE GOT IT!

So .. because of waiting another 3 hours (6 total) we had to wait until the next day to pick it up which they knocked off 40$.,
Thanks Hyundai... great piece of crap and service you/we have.

They still haven't fixed the ultimate problem so this will happen again.

I have a 2016 Hyundai Tuscon. The back passenger door is stuck shut! Just happened out of the blue. I have taken it to my garage and they informed me that they will have to remove the back seat to get to the door to take it apart and potentially break it for approximately $809. Any ideas, suggestions?

I didn't read the entire thread but gathered there was no common resolve. Whether the locks or the door it must be the actuator. Relatively common with Toyota/Lexus since forever.

It sounds like the cable may have just come loose, or the connector at the actuator. Sometimes they're plastic and easy to remove (by hand, when you're trying to). Nothing to heavy duty going on in there, to think it could have broke would not be too far of a stretch. I would hope you can get at least the top portion of the door panel cracked open but suspect not. I would call a tow truck company for advice, they must deal with this often enough.
I have read someone who cut a small hole in the panel to access recently but that seems excessive.

I just started having the door lock issue on the front doors. I think if we all start making these calls things will have to get fixed. Even if you fixed it yourself. Please do this.

Enough of us make these calls it will get fixed. We all need to make the call even if you fixed it yourself.

I just started having this problem today on my rear drivers side door. It’s a safety issue for me as my daughter is there in a booster seat. It happened so quickly. She got out of the car, we went to do something, and when we came back 45 minutes later it wouldn’t open. First major problem I’ve had with my 2017 elantra aside from the battery (which was covered under warranty thankfully).

I was able to find a temporary fix by following just the first part of this video:

For now I'm just going to keep a screwdriver in my car that can help me engage that cable behind the interior door handle and open the door. After I did that and it opened the door, it works without issue again. Who knows how long that will last and it's kind of scary thinking if I was in an emergency situation with kids in the backseat. I think I'll get a bid from the dealership and see if my warranty covers this to get it fixed more permanently. But then that just fixes the current problem door.. what about if this happens to the other 3 doors? Just kind of an unsettling issue. They really should do a recall on these latches.

If you are having this issue in Australia lodge a vehicle safety report:

Nothing will happen until people do this. It is a safety issue and should be subject f a recall

2017 Hyundai Elantra both rear doors will not open from inside or out. Front drivers side opens from the inside but from the outside it only works if I hit it under the handle and this only works occasionally. Front passenger side is pretty much my only stable access. Very frustrating especially since I have just paid it off. Still looking for a fix

The warranty coverage for the door latch has been extended to 10 years (unlimited mileage) from the date of original retail delivery or date of first use, whichever occurs first, and is valid for original and subsequent owners. HERE IS THE TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN FOR IT FROM HYUNDAI HOPE THIS HELPS DATED FROM MAY 2021

Just took my 2016 Tucson Eco in and the warranty for door latch was extended for 10 years, unlimited mileage.

When I first mentioned the issue they tried to quote me 250$ just to diagnose the issue. I mentioned how I read online about the warranty then he changed the price and found the extension.

don’t be scared to take it in y’all!

Hi All,

Solution below.

I came here looking for a way to open the front passenger door to my 2009 i30 and have a solution that might work on the Tucson or other Hyundai cars with a stuck locked door. Symptoms were that I noticed that the door made a locking/unlocking sound at a peculiar time while physically opening it. Next time it was used when getting in to the car and later getting out of the car it worked fine. Then the following time the door would not unlock either inside or outside. The inside lock latch didn't move when unlocking with the remote. The handles had no resistance, as if the cable was disconnected and the inside lock latch was spongy when used manually and did nothing but gave a slight click feeling when using the remote to lock/unlock.

Solution (found on another forum, hard to find, made an account here to post in case it helps others): hold the door handle fully open, and/or open and close the handle, as you lock/unlock repeatedly with the remote. Worked quickly and now the lock is working fine. Problem might return after some time.

During this I now discovered, probably unrelated, that both front door inside lock latches feel spongy and do not work to unlock the door from the inside! So if the battery went flat or fuse went or remote stopped working then you are trapped inside! That might be caused by stretched cables and I read a possible fix of filing/cutting away some of the latch plastic to allow it to open/rotate a bit more. Might try that.

What specifically did they replace - the lock actuators only? My vehicle is one year out of warranty with 87,000 and 3 doors that do not open on either end (front passenger, rear driver side and trunk do not open either way). I replaced all 5 actuators 6 months ago with generic actuators and now I am locked out. I dont want to sell the car because locks are going..but Hyundai is going to charge enormous rate. It will take endless hours to unlock doors when door can not unlock on either side.

I recently had this same issue with the 2007 Elantra SE that we purchased as our daughter's first car. I had the inside panel off (thanks to YouTube videos showing how to pull this off when the door is stuck CLOSED, and had to remove the rear bench seat to get enough room). Was considering the actuator, locking mechanism, more complicated issues.

I noticed that it was very difficult to pull the handle on the outside. I removed the handle (after accidentally breaking a trim piece that can only be removed by loosening a bolt when the door is open - and discovering that our bolt was completely rusted). I could see a piece of metal, but could not budge it to save my life. "Fortunately", we purchased the car missing a front passenger door handle, so I had a frame of reference. Same piece of metal pulled very easily and sprung back after the door unlatched!

After checking with my dad and brother to make sure it was ok to spray WD-40 in there, I did just that. Less than a minute later, the metal piece was moving freely and the door unlatched!

Pre-repair, we could hear the lock mechanism lock and unlock when the electric button was used, and we could also hear a normal noise when the handle was pulled from the inside (not on the outside). If this sounds similar to your issue, I would strongly recommend getting the outer handle off and checking to see if the metal piece in your vehicle is stuck like ours was. With a door stuck shut, you'll have to pry off a piece of trim before you can remove the handle, but I have a brand new handle arriving today for only $20 (including shipping)! And if I can do this, YOU can do it. I'm just a handy mom with a project car!
