Rear brake noise drums

My right rear brake is making a grinding noise when the brakes are applied. I took the drum off a couple weeks ago and the shoes are just a bit worn. Just getting into the numbers printed on the side of the shoe material.

I could not see any thing that would be making the metal on metal sound. Are there any wear indicators on the OEM shoes?

There didn't used to be. All you did was measure them with calipers.

Did you do a cursory check of the hardware and see if something is out of whack? You're usually pretty good, but I have missed the obvious (and sometimes not so) myself on a couple occasions!

Check the adjuster tab. On mine it keeps popping out, but that makes a squealing noise when it happens. YMMV.

I just had a thought: On my Mazda I had a grinding noise coming from the driver's side. Shoes were OK, but the drum was wearing and making a ridge that the side of the shoe was digging into.

I got complete rears for my '09 from Rock Auto for a whopping $35 for both sides. Might be worth just doing them. I trust you looked for the usual trapped rocks, etc.

Yes I sprayed them all down and got it clean. I should have moved the shoes around a bit, I did buy new drums and was prepared (the second time) to do a full change. But the shoes are hardly worn on the drivers side and like I said maybe a 1/4 gone on the passenger side.

Had some good weather here and the time to look so I took off my rear drums again to see why the one side was making noise. All I could see is the brake material was worn down about half way. The side making the noise did have slight groove all the way around on the brake material.

I had everything but new cylinders so I did the whole thing. I hate working on drum brakes. Just don't do it enough to remember the tricks. Glad there is Youtube now a days.

The adjuster tab... in my video pay attention to the groves in the automatic adjuster and the SPRINGS the way they HOOK in. The loops in or out can cause a spring to catch amd pop out the adjuster lever.

A brake service every 12 months keeps parts lubricated and reduces wear and give you quiet braking. I do my brakes EVERY year. Pull them apart check them, lube them and clean them. Both front and rear. Most people replace beakes then when they fail hand it off to a shop. They need a welding torch to get them off or a big sledge hammer lol

Is this noise a cyclic "WICK - WICK - WICK" type sound when stand on pedal kinda firm in last few yards of stop or more ??

My brake drum is giving me knocking sound when pressing the brake lightly or with parking brake apply while the car is moving.

Months ago, I have my original rear brake drum turned because it was giving me knocking sound after replacing a pair of OEM brake shoe. The knocking sound was getting worse after turning the brake drum.

I ordered a pair of Centric brake drum and a pair of original brake shoe. I couldn't find original/OEM brake drum over here. The Hyundai service center does not carry any stock as well and won't help me to order a new one, so I have to order from oversea.

The brake was good and quiet for 3 months. Now the knocking sound come back again. This time I have the cylinder replaced as the old one seems stuck a bit. The knocking sound will go away for a short 30km drive each time I remove and put back the drum. Any idea what happened and what went wrong?

Can I know how should I install the lower return spring? I can't find Hyundai accent MC service manual but Hyundai accent RB service manual shows that the return spring should be placed above the "shoe resting support". When I first remove the drum, the lower return spring was actually underneath.

You can click on my signature and check out the in depth front rear brakes install. When I do brakes front or rear I replace the shoes and drums and or the pads and rotors. This will ensure everything is true and round. I check the seals on the cylinder(drum brakes) and the caliper piston seal (front). You do not need to do this but if you love your car like I do a new pair of brake clips and rear shoes spring kit add too. :) happy DIY

P.S Clean your brakes every year and lube all the contacts for the front and rear brakes. This will make you brakes last longer and provide even wear over time (unless your cylinder or caliper is stuck)

I have my rear brake shoes and drum replaced with new unit few months ago. It lasted for a good 3 months then the knocking sound comes back again. Now both sides of the brake drum is out of round by a little.

Indeed there is a little bit of bending sign here and there over the brake backing/dust shield. But I doubt it is serious enough to produce knocking sound. I attached few pictures which was taken before replacing both drum and shoes.

The hub and bearing seems fine. Both sides were replaced new 2 years ago due to abs sensor failure.
