Radio Problems

Hi everyone,

I have a 2102 Sonata Hybrid with the ultimate package that I bought back in January. Over the last month or so, for some reason when I get in and start the car, about 10% of the time the radio will not work (am, fm, xm, iPod, or cd). Everything is completely quiet. I have to turn off the car, unlock the doors, lock them, unlock them again, and restart the car in order for the radio to work again. I have noticed it happens more when I start the car and begin to immediately put it in drive and stat driving without putting on my seatbelt... Any idea why this is happening and what I need to do to fix it? Thanks for the help!

Hi,
I have noticed the same problem with my 2012 Ultimate Hybrid. What I did notice is that when I immediately go into reverse from start-up, I don't get the Hyundai 'splash screen' on the display. I am thinking that the issue is that the radio needs to 'reboot'. Also...you will notice that the AM HD radio doesn't function. FM is fine. For your info, KNX (1070) and KFWB (980) are both broadcasting in full time HD AM. After much research and testing on my part, the factory rep saw my car at Ladin in Thousand Oaks and confirmed that this is a problem in the 2012 Hybrid. Solution is pending as of 6 weeks ago. FYI..I live in the Valley and work in Hollywood...

Regards,

Bob

I have the same problem as described with my 2012 Ultimate HSH, but all I have to do is shut the car off and count to 10, then restart and wait until the radio is receiving and then everything is OK. I had the dealer check it out and he said there was nothing wrong with it. Since it only happens if I am not patient at start up, I have just decided that that is the nature of the animal and am careful to let everything get up and going before taking off. A fix would be nice though.

Hey Bob and Dan,

Thanks for the replies, I am glad I am not the only one having these problems...Thinking more about the problem, it does happen more often when I start the car and immediately put it into reverse. I guess I will need to be more patient too. Hopefully the recall that was posted on here will fix the problem (I am going to call the dealer on Monday, I will post what hey tell me).

Regarding the HD am issue, I guess I never noticed this because I usually use the XM to listen to sports games, but I will ask about this on Monday as well...

UCLA Boy: I don't want to discourage you but I took the recall bulletin above to my dealer and he said that they ran it and it made no difference. I think you should check anyway because, who knows if they really did the campaign after I asked. Hard problem to replicate so I am unsure that the dealer really believed me. It certaily can't hurt.

Actually I found another poster (sorry forget the name) that came up with the "solution". Somehow the BlueLink and Radio get confused and therefore stuck. If you press the BlueLink button and wait for a second or two then hang up the radio will work again. More like a work around then a solution but it works for now until Hyundai comes up with a real fix.

We got a new 2012 Ultimate last Saturday and this radio problem happened to me yesterday. I was not far from the dealer so I drove there and had the service advisor come look at the car before I shut it off. He said that he knows about the problem but that the solution hasn't been released yet. I didn't remember reading this thread so he reset the radio with a pen and it started working again, but I lost all my presets. I'll try the bluelink hack if it happens again.

I mentioned the spare tire issue and he said he thought that it was because the added weight would cross a threshold and prevent the car from meeting some government standard or other. Another case of over regulation.

Radio Problems - 2012 Hybrid with ultimate package with 2800 miles. Experience problem of losing sound about 10% of time at start-up, mostly when backing up. Need to reboot car to resolve. A pain. Patience is a must.
Cruise Control Problems.
Cruise control often does not engage. Solution. Reboot car. These problems are real and should be addressed by Hyundai.

'11 Hybrid Ultimate

It's funny, I had a weird issue today myself. Like a lot of you, I started and put it right into reverse. I guess the splash screen hadn't finished. I actually turned my head while backing.. so I didn't notice, but when I turned forward and put it in drive, I noticed the display was blank... with only the warning you see when the B/U camera is in use across the top of the screen. It stayed this way. I shut the car off once... only for a few seconds though.. and started it again.. same thing.
Since my dealer is only a couple of block from my office I decided to drive it there. A couple of things I noticed.. when I adjusted the volume or AC Temp... the info popped up and disappeared as it should have... but the bottom 90% of the screen was black. Just that stupid Backup warning.

I pull into the dealer.. the advisor walks up to the car and I go to show him and everything is still being weird. However since I am in Park, I slip i into Reverse to show him how the Camera isn't working... only now it's working. I put it back in Park. Now everything works fine. I looked at him.. said "Thanks" and drove away.

It definitely has something to do with going into reverse too quickly after starting (powering up) the car.

I have had this happen to me several times, I figured out that it was a timing issue of how fast I went from starting car to putting it in reverse, or maybe in and out of reverse. If you put it into/out of reverse relatively quickly, I found that it will do this. The only thing I have found is to do a reboot, power off and on the car, which is what you figured out...

Hey it's probably a window's thing http://www.hyundai-forums.com/229-sonata-yf-hybrid/138894-error-message-display-screen.html

New 2012 Sonata Hybrid with Ultimate Package and 4000 miles. Interesting problem developed within the last few days - specifically relating to the SiriusXM services. Last week I noticed that one of the channels - the Pearl Jam channel became unauthorized. Ignored the problem until this morning when all channels were unauthorized. Contacted SiriusXM checking out the problem. My service and payments were current. Worked with four techs over several hours each trying to reinitialize the service. XM finally pointed to a Hyundai HW problem and recommended I contact the dealer for a checkup. I did and will have the car checked out on Friday 6/8. Also told Hyundai about the intermittent problem with Cruise Control problem. Stay tuned will update after the dealer visit. Would be interested in any other owners have experienced this problem.

My 2012 Ultimate Hybrid (I just made the second payment.) radio goes whacko anytime it feels like it and like a previous member stated press the blue link button on the mirror and then cancell it & the radio comes right back on even the same station, you don't have to stop or shut the car off. This problem is random...backing up...turning...just driving... taking off immediately.

Also if you have the radio on SiriusXM & set to a catergory it will skip over stations outside of that such as if you set to Country and you want to hear Rock or Pop so be sure to set your presets... I learned the hard way...the radio is not broke.

Same problem here, although the "Press Bluelink" and "Cancel" seems to correct the problem every time. I mentioned it to my service advisor and he said he's never heard of this issue before ^_^, but they'll look at it.

One other thing that seems to be related is a "Battery discharge warning" flashes on the NAV screen when the isssue occurs.

Hopefully, they'll figure this out sooner or later.

Audio Off

This happened to me today - I've had the car for a week. I remember thinking at the time it had something to do with my being impatient at startup (it was 104 degrees, so yes, I was impatient) :)

I was on my way to the dealership anyway to pick up the tags from my trade-in so they took me to the service department. They offered to check it out/reset and/or replace the unit. It sounds like none of that will solve the problem until the factory comes up with a permanent solution.

Other than this glitch, this is the most amazing car I have ever owned!

Has anybody had similar issues with the non-Ultimate package? I have a 2012 HSH with the leather package.

I was driving home last night, had BlueLink navigation going (just to test how it worked). I was listening to a podcast on my phone (streaming through bluetooth). When I went under an overpass, both the sound system and BlueLink stopped working. Volume control said the volume was changing, but there was no sound. Couldn't change audio source. Also locked the podcast app on my phone.

To reset, I ended up turning bluetooth off at the phone. Sound system turned on and switched back to XM. Turned bluetooth back on, and could stream from the phone again. But BlueLink never restarted directions.

Anyone seen anything similar?

2012 Hybrid Sonata Radio Problem

I just purchased my new Sonata last month. The radio started doing the same thing as the other posts above. I seems to happen about 10% of the time. Actually the car is at the dealership while I'm typing this. I had them give me a loaner car while they try to find and fix the problem. However they can't make it happen. (Figures ). After doing my own research I found this great site. I love the temp. fix for now. When it happens again I will just push and cancell the blue link button. I will try it. Eventually maybe the dealership will come up with the proper solution. If the dealership knew about this site it might of saved me a headache. Thanks again for all your posts. Also when the dealership opens I will ask about the air bag recall for the 2012 Sonata's (Goes off for no reason). Just saw story about the recall this morning on the news. Any updates please post.

The "BlueLink hack" works almost every time as reported by several folks here, but the dealer fix for it so far is to pull the main (yellow) fuse, (it's the one you're supposed to pull to protect the battery if you plan on leaving the car sit for extended periods), then reset it!
My service manager says it is like re-booting a computer from the dreaded blue screen!!
Still don't think this is a permanent fix, but then I never took back a computer cause I had to re-boot it from a hang-up even when it happened to me 2-3 times a month!! I just got used to recognizing the glitch and dealing with it!! Then again, I NEVER paid $30,000 for a computer either!!
Just figure the 10 second reset is more worth MY time then going all the way to the dealer and waiting in line to watch them do something I can do in 10 seconds!! Still sucks though !!
