you can also push the volume button.. technically it'll turn the radio "off", but functionally, it works like a mute button as the radio comes right back on when you push it again.. I think that it's the same thing that holding the Mode button does.

 

Thanks. When I tried pushing the radio knob it indeed turned off the radio but seemed to turn off the darn av voice as well!

 

Muting Radio

I also have a 2009 sonata and it has a mute button on steering wheel. My 2015 does NOT have a mute button. The owners guide says it is now a voice command. But that doesn't work. Dealer said "Just hold mode button which will turn radio off.". That's what I do because, even if the voice command worked, it takes so long to execute, it's not worth the trouble.

What I've noticed was that there is no "Back" button on the steering wheel. You have to reach forward to the head unit to hit the "back" button.
I had a 12 Toyota Camry that had a "Back" button on the steering wheel and also had a mute button too.
What do these engineers think about all day dreaming up a car? LOL!

Do love my Sonata better than the Camry.

 

My 2011 Kia Sorento had a mute button and I really liked having it. Not sure why Hyundai didn't include one on the Sonata.

 

As another poster mentioned, pressing and holding the "Mode" button for a couple of seconds performs an A/V Mute. Another press of the button un-mutes it.

 

By mode so you mean the button that says 'radio' for example???
This is in the sat nav touch screen version.

Pressing and holding the radio button does not mute it.

 

2015 2.0T Ultimate. Steering wheel left side audio buttons there's one marked "Mode" - top row, right. Press and release switches between AM - FM - Sirius - Bluetooth - MP3 ... Press and hold performs an A/V Mute.

 

My Volvo has a steering wheel mute button. Way convenient.

Correct, it only mutes/shuts off audio system, not either phone or Nav. voice.

 

I have a 2.4l Sport with premium and asking the same question. I'll try the "holding down the MODE" button the next time. I'm trying to figure out how to keep the phone connected, but the radio off from time to time.

 

I know it's been mentioned already, but I'd just like to organize everything into 1 post.

There are 3 options to try:
1. Press and hold mode on steering wheel controls
2. Press and hold volume button on radio
3. Press (and do not hold) the volume button on the radio

See if any of those do what you'd like.

 

The SE model (with the optional 5-inch touch screen radio) has a mute button on the radio itself (beside of the touch screen part of the unit). I think this post is about one with the large touch screen however. I wish it had a button on the wheel however.

Yes, there is a mute button to the side.
I think this has been figured out: There is no way to mute from the steering wheel, just on/off with the Mode button.
Can hit the volume down quickly however.
