Hi, I just got a GLS automatic, and considering buying the Hyundai-backed extended warranty. Can people who have bought it post how much they paid ? I have been quoted $1795 for the platinum coverage which essentially extends the 5yr/60K bumper-to-bumper to 10yr/100K. Is this high ?

Also, does anybody know if I can get the same warranty later, let's say within the first year, and how much extra can it cost ?

Thanks for your input.

you can get the same warranty from new up until it reaches the 5yr 60k limit (so buy it b4 5 yrs or 60k miles)

I got it for $1695 or something like that.... I pretty much got forced into getting it. Dealer told me I can either get it or my apr will raise! First time buyer though so yeah they got me! Guess it's not that bad though, covers a lot of things.

that's not legal (to affect APR rate by selling add-ons) but has become accepted dealer practice

I smell a bad business tactic there. How can a warranty purchase affect your APR?

Finance officer told me I was getting it for "free" because if I would of financed with hyundai I would of got 9% apr and they got me financed for 3.9% with Partners FCU. If I could do it all over I probably wouldn't have gotten it. I'm not going to fuss about it though, just take it as a lesson learned.

So any suggestions?
consult a lawyer?

I honestly don't know...the dealer played this game with me when I bought my 2001 QX4 years ago off lease.....But I wanted the extended warranty (because it was used) and lower rate so it worked out for me...

I would go in there and raise a huge stink about it. You're probably screwed since you did sign everything and take delivery but maybe if you are persistient you could get something out of them like some free oil changes or something.

Also if it is true that you cannot tie APR to add ons, I would contact a lawyer...or if you have a friend or family member who is a lawyer have them send a letter to the dealer.

I would also make sure you report this to Hyundai. They are trying so hard to improve their image and I would imagine last thing they want to see is shady dealer behavior.

Interesting -- my dealer told me he can only hold this price for a month, and that price will be higher if I buy it later, and even then I may not be able to get the full 10yr/100K. Do you, or anybody else, know about an official brochure or something like that mentions this ? That way I can negotiate better with the dealer with the proof that he is wrong.

I was quoted around the same amount and turned it down telling the finance guy I could get it cheaper. He told me I couldn't but came back five minutes later, while my wife and I were signing papers, and offered it for $950. Told him I still wasn't interested and I thought he was going to cry. Conveniently he left the $950 on my final loan documents. When I questioned him, he claimed it was a mistake - he said
put it on there because he was sure I would be taking it at that price - Yeah sure.

I'm not sure what thier cost is, but I would at least expect to get the price down to around $1k or so. I got mine for $1100 with only one round of negotiation, which tells me they still made a killing. On a related note, I noticed that the warranty site has clarified thier coverage in more detail now. It appears that the nav system is probably covered after all, where before they simply excluded "audio" and made it kind of iffy.

the additional warranty is a rip off designed for a fool.

u already get 5 year 50k and 10 year 100k on drivetrain.....why would u want to buy more ?
peace of mind???? (because we all know Murphy's Law- if you don't buy it, it will break and if you buy it, it never breaks)

Oh that is terrible advice. While I highly suggest the Hyundai HPP only. the price goes up from on average of $1000

to $3500 in two years. As a side note the Car couldn't have more than 36K to qualify for the Hyundai plan. Best investment

you can make!

It is 5/60, and although the P/T Warranty covers an impressive amount of items, it is no new car warranty!

If you payoff the car (or trade it in) before the extended warranty period, you can cancel the extended warranty. i traded in a 2008 elantra with an $1100 extended warranty that i didnt even come close to being active. the Hyundai dealer actually filled out and submitted the extended warranty refund form for me. I actually made them do this as part of my "terms" to make a new purchase.

since right now it is included in your financing contract, it would have to be a refinance (if even possible) to change it.

good luck!

Thanks vewdew. That's a big difference from my quote $1795! Just to make sure we are talking about the same level of coverage and deductible, my quote was for the highest tier plan (platinum) with zero deductible. I'm beginning to wonder if some folks who replied with a much lower price may have had some deductible or another level of coverage.

Quoted $1495 - Did not purchase now, because I was also told I could get it later on.

If a dealer/salesman tells me my APR will raise because not purchasing add-ons, I would RUN out of there.
LowBoost, was your quote for the platinum HPP plan with no deductible ?

I see you had a quote for platinum coverage, but was the $950 quote with zero deductible ? Thanks.

FWIW, I get an all inclusive 7 yr 120k mile bumper to bumper warranty as part of my insurance with Geico. Its part of all brand new cars insured with geico, costs me $0.00 and is transferrable to the next owner providing he/she is a geico customer as well

just something to consider...

I believe it's called gold coverage with a deductible.

So I wrote to Hyundai about this experience via their web page. I did go to the dealer to cause a stink about it the next day but they pretty much told me the deal is done and there is nothing I can do about it. I'll see if i get a response from Hyundai. Most likely i'll pay off the car early and get a refund on the extra coverage in the future if I can't get one right now.

As I find out more about this Hyundai extended warranty, I'm getting confused. While it looks like the price quoted to me may be a fair one, I'm wondering about the actual coverage. Specifically, does anyone know if failure due to "wear and tear" is covered ? Somewhere in the contract it seems to mention a 50K miles rule, but this type of failure is more likely to occur after that!

These include (quoted from http://www.carbuyingtips.com/warranty.htm): the gradual reduction in operating performance, burned/worn valves/guides, valve grinding, worn rings, burned pistons, any covered part that has not failed. This includes seepage of seals and gaskets, fasteners and retainers (nuts, bolts, screws, clamps, brackets), damage caused by overheating.
