Hi all,

I have a 2016 Sonata Plug in. Since 2017, I've noticed and reported to the dealership hesitation and shuddering from the engine when trying to accelerate. That went on for a time, with me visiting the dealership several times to no avail. In 2021, I also reported a drastic loss of battery charge (from 27 full charge to 21). We visited the dealership over a dozen times with the ECS light illuminating.

Long story short, they finally agreed to replace the hybrid battery system in 2021, and we were without the car for 70 days while that happened.

In 2022, they agreed to replace most of the engine components, and we were without the car for 96 days.

After that, I started complaining to corporate about my dissatisfaction with the car and asking for a replacement vehicle. After months of back and forth, they offered me over $1500 (which was equal to 5 months of car payments) to close the case. I accepted it grudgingly, knowing I wouldn't be able to squeeze any more out of them.

Now I received a notice of a class settlement against Hyundai for what seems to be the very issues I was complaining about.

I share just to offer my own experience to others who may be going through something similar. The car still has hesitation and/or shuddering issues at times upon acceleration, so we'll see what happens in the future.

Cheers,
Jeff

I assume you get no warnings or codes though? Depending on the warranty or remaining warranty you got with those replacements, I would take it back to the dealer and document the issue you still have and experience that way at least, or make a video, etc. I'm sure they won't be able to duplicate anything without a computer code, but documenting the vehicle doesn't work right no matter what time or money was paid is probably a good idea in case something gets worse.

I have a 2016 Sonata plug-in hybrid and it also has hesitation at times. The issue seems to be when running in EV mode and you accelerate too much for the battery to handle the engine has to start cold and takes a couple seconds. This gives about 2 seconds where the car won't respond to acceleration. Very dangerous if you are pulling out into traffic. If you turn off EV mode and let the engine warm up and then switch back to EV mode it helps.
