Parking Safety System!

I was reversing out of my parking spot in my Tucson 2022 HEV Ultimate, looked over my shoulder and there was a post behind me, I decided to back up until the parking sensors beep when I get close to the post so I would stop (I always have Parking Distance Auto On and Rear Active Assist selected).. and it didn’t beep.. let alone stopping the car before hitting the post!! I ended up denting the trunk door and scratching the bumper. It was a rainy day and the car was covered in some mud from driving on the road, but none of the safety systems alerted that they are not working properly which they usually do.
Took it to the dealership and they determined that the sensors are working properly after rinsing the bumper and sensors!! Reached out to Hyundai Auto and they thanked me for the feedback stating that they will do an internal review!!
I still like the car so much and know that I should be always in control, but it is really disappointing that the car safety systems failed to assist me in this simple maneuver and didn’t perform as advertised. Just wanted to share that with you! Thanks.

It is possible that the post was too narrow in cross-section to be picked up by the sensors? Could you ask the dealer and/or Hyundai Auto if there is a minimum cross-section that will be picked up? This could be good information to know.

I did some quick Googling, and this was all I found. From Wikipedia: ..........As an ultrasonic systems relies on the reflection of sound waves, the system may not detect flat objects or object insufficiently large to reflect sound — e.g., a narrow pole or a longitudinal object pointed directly at the vehicle or near an object. Objects with flat surfaces angled from the vertical may deflect return sound waves away from the sensors, hindering detection. Also soft object with strong sound absorption may have weaker detection, e.g. wool or moss.

Yeah, my recommendation is to use all available resources - in this case, mirrors, cameras, plus your own eyeballs. when I back up, I'll switch between mirrors, cameras, and looking directly. And if someone else is in the vehicle, I'll often put them to work, asking them to also look, if I think it will help!

Yeah, that is what I usually do, I even scan the surroundings before getting into the car. This was the first time that I wanted to relax and rely on the tech for a simple assistance in a near empty parking lot with no pedestrians around. I know it is not a Tesla, but it should have done better, I should have too. Thanks!

I think you answered your own question. I’ll bet the manual mentions the need to keep sensors clean for proper operation. You mentioned mud, didn’t you?

But I didn’t get an answer as to why the safety system didn’t alert that it is not working properly as one or some sensors were covered mildly in mud. Were all sensors (front and rear) not working properly as well, don’t think so.
Also, I haven’t had my car washed in 3 weeks now and it is been very cold and snowy with slushy roads here in Ontario and the parking sensors are still beeping when approaching obstacles, didn’t stop working or alerted that they are not working properly for being covered with snow or road salt. Weird, eh? Thanks!

Agreed, if it was a child would you have just hit em like a speed bump after seeing them waiting for the sensor to pick them up?

Just can’t wrap my head around knowingly backing into something and causing damage just because a sensor is “supposed” to tell me to stop. Why not stop short of the pole once you realized the sensor wasn’t doing it’s thing?

I backed up in our 2018 sonata and hit a stationary car. It was not moving and I too was waiting for a beep to let me know if I was clear. I think I was told that if the object is stationary it does not beep and I should have been monitoring the screen to make sure that nothing was in my way. Either way, I now monitor the screen when backing up to make sure that the sensors may have missed something.
