I have an '06 Sonata LX 3.3, and about 8 months ago installed a Weapon R Short Ram intake (http://www.weapon-r.com/index.php?act=view_product&id=227). I immediately noticed a big problem, that the car, when given more than 80% or so throttle, would cut out and go into "Limp Mode" (+CEL). Is there any way to solve this issue? Tune, faulty sensors, etc? Has anyone else had a problem with V6's and AM intakes?

no clue as what the issue could be, never experienced "limp home mode" but id say likely a maf and vaccum hose problem is ur best bet but again even through the 4 versions(so far) of short ram and cold air intakes ive used never has that occured to me....id say something may be wrong with the intake so just go back to stock for the time being and see if the problem also happens then...if so you have some unknown engine issue

I would think that a Limp Mode + CEL would results is some stored codes. I would have the computer scanned for these codes, it should help you determine the root cause to this issue.

The vacuum hose is almost completely pinched off by the engine cover, so I'll try to do something about that today. Also I put the stock intake back on last night and it was fine, so I assume no engine problems.

looks fairly correct maybe that vac line was the issue, try putting the weapon R back on and make sure that the line isnt pinched and see what happens that could of been the issue all along or possibly you will need to make it into a longer possibly CAI if problems continue. but the only CEL code with that setup i could see popping up would be a High manifold pressure one

If this change has indeed increased the airflow into the engine, the fuel map would have to be modified to suit. Else, the engine would run lean especially at high speed. I know the "HyperTech" module is used on other makes but I do not know if they support Hyundai products. Does anyone out there know who supports "Fuel map" software changes for Hyundai?

That's the only thing I could think it would be, but I assume I would need higher flow injectors as well

So I took the car in to check the CEL codes, and apparently they say I need a new throttle body, pedal sensor, new mapping software, and a PCM reflash (about $1100) :/

When they scanned the CEL, it came up with quite a few codes, and we checked them with Hyundai, which is why. But a new throttle body? When I installed the intake it seemed just fine...

Well the codes can indicate one or more problems, but my first question to the dealer would be why these parts need replacing. What caused these codes to occur and show me why all of them need replacing. Sounds to me that they looked at the codes and simply told you those parts need to be replaced without any further investigation. I would want a root cause as to why all of these parts have failed apparently simultaneously and what would prevent this from re-occuring. There might be something behind all of this and the last thing you want to do is pay for this repair and find out later that you need to do it all over again because they did not do their job in determining the actual casue to this failure.

So just picked up the Sonata from Hyundai. Got everything fixed; new pedal sensor, tune up, rotation, fixed front left shock, pcm reflash, etc (was all about $1450), and of course engine still goes to "limp mode" when I push it. I'm just gonna assume it needs a new fuel map or something to that extent? Taking it to the performance shop I took the nsx to for the tt kit, hopefully they can figure it out

Oh I hope to god you're right haha, that will save me so much trouble!

So used some CNC cleaner and sprayed out the MAF sensor...no dice, engine still cuts out. Guess I'll just go get a fuel tune.

I bought the same weapon r intake for my Sonata 06 3.3L and it did do the same. I live in Texas (north houston area) and I noticed that when driving a bit during summer, I popped the hood with the engine on, and the fan blows hot air directly towards the intake. What I did, I took the original box filter cover and cut off the back half then covered the front of the weapon r intake. This kinda shields off some of the hot air coming from the fan. So far I haven't had any stalls or limp modes, but I'm still testing it out though. I think this why it would do this. And I noticed my fuel mileage began to increase as well. Hope this helps.

Your car is getting skewed air fuel ratios from the aftermarket intake ya have on! It's a very common issue for newer type vehicles to go into limp mode and trigger a check engine MIL light! It happend to me with my precious vehicles after installing a cai and even with a custom tune it didn't even help cause of the intakes skewed air fuel ratio!
