Got swipe sided by a hit and run driver in Miami :(. I do have uninsured coverage; should I file a claim or try to fix this on my own? Thanks!

wow. that is pretty bad. depending on the year of your car, it might be totaled. that isnt just a part of the car you unbolt and replace with another, thats going to need some serious bodywork likely involving cutting out the old panel and welding in a new one.

I'd definitely get insurance involved. That's going to add up quickly.

And then hunt the person down and...well...

You have a good idea of the color of the other car. I'd call the police and have them watch the body shops.

Hit and runs aren't taken lightly. Especially with that much damage and if the person was drunk.

about 9000 dollars to repair that and weld panel and paint the car . Replace the fuel tank neck, cap, wheel well. then you got to get the rear frame checked for true square. My wife just tapped the front bumper and go part of the door and they charged the insurance company 9000 dollars to fix it. the car is only worth 13000 new. they still went ahead and fixed it lol

I'm trying to figure out what the heck hit it! Awfully high up for a bumper. Pickup truck with something sticking out of the bed?? Bucket loader??

Mine was victim of a hit-and-run many years ago. The hit was in that same location but nowhere near as bad as that. It was $1400 then and that was with no new parts - just repair and repaint. Quarter panel dents fixed, rear bumper repaired, and paint the bumper, quarter panel, and rear door to blend it all in.

Really sorry to see this -- I could definitely see it being totaled.

Good luck!

Nah, that'll buff right out! ;)

To the OP, how much do you like the car? The damage is bad, but not THAT bad. A new door can be had for ~$1-200 depending if you have power options, and a really good body man can fix the sheetmetal in the quarter. Not easy but it can be done.

If the insurance co totals it, as them to buy it back as a "rebuildable". It will be a lot less than they are going to pay you, and if you can find a real wizard who doesn't charge an arm and a leg it will look as good as new. It may cost you a few hundred to $1000.

Caveat: depending on where you are you may not be able to insure it for collision again, but then they might do an inspection and deem it acceptable.

Thye big thing is that it looks like all sheetmetal damage from the pics you posted. No structural damage apparent. That goes a long way.

I used to occasionally "estimate" damage costs for my friend's auto body shop. It's actually easy to do. You inspect the damage and determine which parts need to be replaced. The PC software does the rest and spits out a number. That's the simple version. However then there are other not so cut and dry repairs where you can get into variables such as how many hours, are there any parts you can't see, is there any frame straightening required. OEM parts or after market? Depends on the year of the car...and insurance carriers. Like anything else. Some are great. Some are not.
All that being said... without the computer software I honestly don't know how much it'd cost to restore to where it was, but I can tell you this: It'll be in the thousands, and it will probably be more than you imagined it'd be......
I hope you have a good insurance carrier.....

So i up my ante to ~$3500 if you find the right shop.

You can also check and see if there are any trade schools in the area. If they can do it it will be ~1/2 the price.

LOL! I'm a night owl. But after a rethink, I guess even if the OP can find a cut rate shop, gonna be $5000 minimum.

It's just body work is kind of easy (right...?) and I look at it and say "cut there, hammer there, weld there...simple!!" but the labor is a killer and paint is going to be $8-1000 alone.

I'm interested in how the OP makes out with the ins co and an estimate...

wow.... state farm recommended the shop I go to and they footed a 9000 dollar bill. I told state farm they had fraud them because the parts were not that much. Items replaced on my car was. The whole bumper and inner assembly, tie rod, front fender, door, mirror, brake assembly and right axle w/hub, inner wheel well cover, headlight and painting. They ALWAYS mark up the price when insurance is involved. If I could find the bill I would have scanned it and uploaded it to this post to show you how a little accident can cost you BIG TIME. That's why we pay such hi rates because of crooks like these. Be aware of who you deal with.

With my buick I hit a deer and they charged state farm 5000 dollars to fix a hood, bumper, headlight and paint. An to make things worse I stopped into the shop that was fixing my buick unannounced and they were installing a used headlight and rusted hood that they were in the middle of painting thinking I was getting new parts as per the bill. What fraud...... I reported this to state farm and they basically did not care.

Someone hit my Scion door and fender, sliced a gash in the door and twisted the bottom of the fender. The door skin was patched (nice job, too) and the fender replaced with an aftermarket fender , $1780. I could have done it for ~$700...
