My air conditioner is whistling at me

I just noticed this ever since it started to warm up outside. Usually between 4-6 ticks(the lights that light up when you change the power), the whistling is the loudest. It's a very annoying noise and I can't pinpoint the issue. I was thinking it was maybe just some air turbulence within the vent, but even when I put the air to go on the floor only, I still hear it. Wondering if it's something worth taking my car in for. My gf and mom heard the noise as well, so I'm not going crazy. I also compared the air conditioning to my gf's Elantra GT an hers was completely quiet, with no whistling noise. Anyone else have this whistling noise with their air conditioning on? It's not really "loud", but it's clearly there. Really is noticeable when I switch between power levels of the air condition.

I'm taking an uneducated stab at this: cabin air filter dirty or need adjustment? The filter's replacement cover plate loose, or unattached? Something stuck in the vent channels?

Not trying to make light of your distress, but I offer this in hopes it brings a smile: a happy gremlin residing in the ductwork enjoying the breeze. :wink2:

haha okie that may be the case, if so that gremlin is getting cooled down rather nicely because this air condition gets cold!

But yeah, I'll give the filter a look. I did play with all the vents, moving them in different directions and still had the noise. It's gotta be something behind the vents because if it was something directly related to the top vents, it'd go away when I send all the air to the floor. I figured I cold also try spraying some canned air into the vents to possibly clear any dust build up perhaps. Car isn't even a year old so can't be much at all if there is any.

You ain't kidding that air gets cold. I had mine on today during a 26 mile jaunt home. I had to turn the danged thing down. About to run me outta there. I keep a small HVAC thermometer in the driver's vent. I glanced down and the temp was indicating abut 40F coming out of the ducts.

It was extremely cold inside the cabin. Either that, or both of Ms. OKieRich's turkeys were done!

Air flow within the HVAC ducts, nothing to be done on dealer level.. have a bunch of customers state they can hear a "whistle/air flow" sound from ducts.. not a safety issue, more of an annoyance..

When my gf's Elantra GT air conditioning is quiet as can be, there is definitely something wrong. Though it very well be just the design of some sort, but I surely don't remember this noise last summer went I bought the car. Which leads me to believe something is up. Dealer said today that often times a leaf can get trapped inside. I'll be bringing it in next week, at least for them to inspect for anything of that sort.

Okie, yeah I usually do drive with the music going. But there are just those times after a long day, it's nice to enjoy some quiet. But I'm also that type where any little noise/rattle will bug me big time! So this gets to me lol

Crank up the tunes? Surely the whistling isn't integrated into the volume control knob.

Seriously, I have this left-brained idea. Open the cabin door slot, remove the filter, and put the wet/dry hose nozzle onto the exhaust port. Stick the other end in front of each vent and let her rip. If there's something in there, maybe it will become dislodged.

I know, I know. Sounds stupid, even to me. But what if it works?

Anyway you could do a sound clip?

Like what others have already mentioned it does sound like a debris is in the blower/housing.

Okay guys, you want a good laugh? Turns out this whistling noise was due to the passenger side vent being in the "closed" position. That's all it was! I feel like an idiot. I was actually going to take it in, and I'd figured let me try and mess with these vents one more time, and wouldn't you know, that was it! I did play with the vents but I never thought to mess with the wheel that opens and closes it. Well, there you have it. One big goof ball mistake lol

^^^^ LMAO. Good to know you discovered the culprit. Simplest solution was the correct one, huh? This reminds me of my interior "rattling" that drove me over the edge. Only to find it being my sunglasses inside the upper compartment in the headliner. But, what a relief, yes? Now you can get back to enjoying the car, and not thinking it was beginning to start falling apart. :wink2:

Yeah I couldn't believe it when switched it to "on", and it was completely gone haha But hey, I can admit to this awful mistake lol Just goes to show how we can easily skip over the most simplest things. Thanks though to everyone who chimed in on it though. I guess the one good thing I learned though is how to replace the cabin air filter. I will add that it's doing a fine job stopping a lot of particles from entering my car!
