Making a call

Hi everyone
I’ve recently upgraded my iX35 to a 2018 Santa Fe.
I can’t work out how to make a handsfree phone call, on n’y last Hyundai there was a push to talk type button on the steering wheel which I could then speak and say “call (number) or (name)”

I am in the UK, the model of vehicle is a Santa Fe Endurance. I’m using an IPhone 13 if that makes any difference. (My friend said her Tucson is the same)

it’s frustrating me that I’m not able to make calls while driving home from work etc.

If I press the green call button it just shows me the screen I’ve posted, so I then need to click either the history or phone book buttons on the screen and use the tune knob to scroll down and select the person.
if I hold the green call button down it automatically calls the last Person I rang.

My 2017 has three buttons

and I simply press the upper and say 'Call - Work'
and it dials the number as long as the phone is connected by USB to the vehicle.

If I make a call not USB connected it still goes through the vehicle, but not voice controlled.

I also do not have an i-phone and do have Android Auto installed?

Yea so I used to have the upper button in my last car, and that is what I’m missing.
I didn’t know if I was being silly and just couldn’t see the obvious way I’m supposed to be able press something and say “call John” without needing to fiddle with the screen/buttons which is dangerous.
Seems a silly design flaw when using mobile phones while driving is illegal, but touching the screen etc is just the same as using the phone

Someone with an i-phone and Apple Car Play may need to chime in to help here.

I see it's been a while since you've posted, but I just tried using voice commands for calls in my 2022 Tucson today, and it was a bit buggy too. Sometimes it gets the name wrong or doesn’t respond. Has anyone figured out if updating the software helped with that? Or maybe Bluetooth connection strength plays a part? Curious to hear if things have improved for anyone recently.

That is bizarre. That's a 2018, I'm assuming it even supports Android/Apple auto and lane assist, but they forgot to put that "talk" button.
Anyway, with my Pixel phone I just use direct voice commands to the phone "hey Google " and perform the task I want. I find it faster and easier to use. The built in options always has a pause and a follow question, blah blah blah.
Hey Google: call...... and it's done...
