Main Front Speakers Replacement Question - 2024 Elantra SEL w/Convenience

I love my car, but the sound system is less than desirable (non-Bose trim). My 2011 Cruze LTZ sounded better.

I have seen posts stating the shortcoming is with the stock amplifier and not speakers. I would say this is the case if one were upgrading to premium speakers. Certainly would not want to invest in premium speakers interfacing to the stock amplifier. But, I am just looking for a little improvement. Has anyone upgraded to mid grade speakers but kept the stock amplifier and noticed an improvement? I am just looking to replace the two front mains with Kicker 46CSC674 via Crutchfield.

You will like dealing with Crutchfield
I have had good experience with them and also had some help from them when I did my HHR that I had !
Look into getting their wire harness for plug and play install ! I also got speaker mounting spacer so no drilling needed !
Not sure if needed with the Elantra !
I also got the plastic trim tools for panel removal !
I am sure You Tube has Elantra Speaker install videos !
Please Update when you done as I ma also do my 2923 Elantra later
Thanks

I replaced the rear door speakers with some better speakers hoping it would give the upper/lower end a bit of a boost, but in the end, it didn't do much, but they are a bit better than the single paper cone factory speakers.

I debated about replacing front 4 speakers but haven't pulled the trigger for fear it won't help much.

I say if you can find a good deal on some speakers give it a try and report back.

I have a 2024 Elantra SEL (prefered). I look to maybe replace the front speakers only. You say it is made of paper cone ? Not poplyprolylene ? :) I think that for rains or snow, even when you high pressure wash the door sides... i sometime nealy get a little bit of water on the speaker grill. Would in polypropylene be better ?

Hi all.... Since I see there are some standing by, I have an update but have not done the installation yet. In speaking with a tech rep at Crutchfield, he said, while the Kicker 46CSC674 is a good pair, they are designed for more power (take up to 100 watts RMS). He suggested something closer to what the stock Elantra is putting out, and mentioned the Roxford Fosgate R165X3 (2-45 watts RMS). So, I ordered those. But, they will stand short of the door panel grill and let sound into the panel space. I am now waiting on Stinger Roadkill FAST rings to arrive so I can use those as a solution. I did electrically hook one R165X3 up in the first panel I opened just to see what it would sound like in the open. It lacks bass, but is crisp. I hope that the foam rings do not further absorb what little base there is, but there is no way I am going to mount the speakers without them, because sound will be lost to the panel cavity. I am hoping that experimenting with the EQ and fade (since I will still have stock in the back) will bring a good sound (at least better than stock) to the cabin. I will update when everything is in and the experimenting is done.

OK folks... I am at the point where I can provide some info on my install. Top level summary: For anyone wanting a significant improvement in their Elantra SEL trim level and lower audio, skip a speakers only install and add an amplifier. That is a project I am not willing to do right now.

I was hoping to get an improvement by selecting new front door speakers that were not rated for higher power, so there would be a good match to the stock head unit. That is what the folks at Crutchfield suggested as well. The Roxford Fosgate R165X3 pair fit this bill. I also purchased Roadkill Fast foam rings... solid foam to mount at the back of door and a foam ring to mount to the front of the speaker to join with the door panel grill to focus the sound into the cabin and not get lost in the door panel cavity. Result: Worse than stock speaker when listening to radio music, maybe slightly better when listening to streaming music from phone to car via bluetooth. "Better" is objective. To my ears and taste, the new speaker when streaming is slightly more crisp in the high end. But, bass is effectively non-existent. When using the stock EQ, and changing from -10 to +10 on bass, there is basically no change in this new speaker. The stock speaker has an audible bass range to it. The speakers I purchased have an integrated woofer and tweeter. Did not need the tweeter, since there is a small stand alone one in the upper front door that is sufficient. So, maybe that contributes to the situation I have described. Who knows what would happen if I got stand alone woofer speakers but are designed for higher power, but I am done experimenting.

I have yet to install the second speaker of the pair, because I wanted to use the fader to go back and forth between the new speaker and the stock one in the other door so I had an immediate change to evaluate. My comments above are related to this situation. Hopefully after I install the second one and after a break in period I will experience a little improvement. But, not sure these particular speakers will show any break in difference. Hope this helps. Cheers.

Thank you tivoh12. Do you have first hand experience with the Hertz K 165 or are you basing this off of reviews and the fact that it is component? One reviewer did say it lacks base. I am going to try one more thing. When I put the passenger side Rockford Fosgate in, I will disconnect the stock tweeter in the upper panel, then do a test between the driver side where I have everything connected and the passenger side with the stock tweeter disconnected/3-way RF connected, then listen to each individually via the balance. Also, I called Crutchfield and the tech rep said a break in period will probably result in improvement.

OMG... Sorry folks, but scratch everything I said above. Thought it would be a good test just installing the one new Roxford Fosgate R165X3 in the driver side to start with, then using the L-R balance to test the sound on one against the other. That took me up to my last post, but now that I have installed the other Rockford Fosgate, the sound is great. Remember, all I was looking for was an improvement without getting an amplifier. I don't know if the system did not like the mismatch or what, but now there is decent base. I can now use my stock EQ and have some range. The highs and mid range are much, much sharper than the stock, and the bass is now sufficient for an overall cabin soundstage improvement.

tivoh12.... I know this is what you were looking for as well, so I hope this final report helps.

Now I have to go change my reveiw on Crutchfield from 3 stars to 5 stars....

Sorry for all the posts.
