Anyone else notice how poor the headlights are on this...

There is a distinct black "line" toward the top of the lit portion of the road, and when you're going down hill, you can only see a few feet in front of the car.

I'm not inclined to upgrade anything since it seems like a defect with regards to design. Anyone get any resolution when taking it to the dealer?

These aren't the only cars that have this issue. A lot of projector beam headlights without HID seem to suffer from this. Maybe others who have upgraded to HID can shed some light on this. (No pun intended :D)

I'm also not sure at the moment if these housings can be easily adjusted upwards just a little bit to increase range without blinding the car in front of you.

I do agree with you, these headlights aren't the greatest with that sharp cutoff.

there is no defect in regards to design. thats how all cars are that have OEM projectors in them, regardless of halogen or HID. the cutoff line is designed to keep the light in front of the car at a safe level to keep from blinding oncoming drivers.

if youre coming from a car that didnt have projector based housings, these headlights can seem a little weird at first but you get used to it. With the halogen bulbs, yes they pretty much suck but if you switch to HIDs then the ourput will be a lot better.

aiming them up is not a good idea. you will be aiming a focused beam of light directly into oncoming drivers' eyes.

as far as this issue, like i said its not a design flaw. its the nature of projector headlights. And the cutoff on this car is nowhere near sharp. its fuzzy along the cutoff and that helps with the transition from the lit area and the dark area above it. My speed3 has a razor sharp cutoff after i did a lens swap and a few other things. there was no fuzz at all and it was pretty hard on the eyes after a few hours of driving.

IMO, just get a good set of HIDs and a harness and call it a day. most here are completely satisfied with the output and imo, it helps out a lot.

Even with 6000K HID's, the output is OK. I wish there was slightly more output. I'm about to install 6000K foglights and this should help.

Buy these: Headlight Protection

I have them on my Xfire and they are awesome. Plan on getting them for the wifey's Sonata. :D

keep the car clean. lol. use lamin x film on the lights. theres many things that can be done to slow the process.

hids are the only solution to this problem with this car. going to the dealer for this is going to solve nothing. theyll probably check the aiming and send you on your way.

LOL. Such a great product for sure. Not cheap, but good and they include the film for the fog lamps too.

it is a great product but for what it does and how well it works, its definitely worth the money. and the fog overlays being thrown in make it a great deal. im getting those along with the tail light tint soon. once i get my LED tails then ill be ready to slap all that stuff on there.

Most Sonatas that come off the line have a decent angle to their cutoff line when on a flat surface. On a flat surface from about 20ft away, your cutoff should be about 3ft high.

If they are lower than that, you might want to adjust them up to compensate. There are adjustment screws on each side that you can use to change the light angle to your preference. Just look in your user manual for the exact location.

If you want to get some HIDs let us know. We provide HID systems designed specifically for the 2011-2012 Hyundai Sonata with great light output.

Does yours have the extra wiring to the battery? I would prefer a setup similar to the one on my Ranger. That gets it's power from the socket.

Tired,

i would highly suggest that you dont install your HIDs without the harness. there have been many people here that have fried the BCM (body control module) due to not having a harness hooked up. our cars headlight wiring is not designed for the load required for HIDs to fire. That bcm is anywhere from 600+ to replace...all for not picking up a 15 dollar harness.

it may work fine on your ranger, but the HIDs on the sonata have proven to be a problem with the harness.

Understood. I should have thought of that. :D Thank you.

I've spent a long time thinking I was the Only one who experienced this Dark Veil at dusk/later and I can attest that clk'ing on the Bright Lights erases most of it.

Reversed my HID attitude awhile back & have had the HIDextra Pkg sitting in a drawer fearful of Hyundai's Warranty Squad - This may push me over the edge. The Same Veil was apparent in a friend's Camry, so I reasoned it was the tubular bulb housing Vs a unique Hyundai issue.

The dark veil was what pushed me over the edge to install the HID's i got from Xenonsupply, it took me about 35ish minutes to do a correct install just going step by step but it was definitely worth it.

If you're concerned about warranty you can always put your factory bulbs back in if something goes wrong, as far as regular service like oil changes or anything unrelated to the headlights, they really can't do much like void your warranty as long as they or you didn't directly cause something to go out, like if you cracked your headlight housing or something silly that really wouldn't happen.

Btw. cool to see someone else from B'ham :D

If something does go wrong, I would try Tameron vs. Jim Burke. Haven't had the best luck with Jim Burke so far..
