Its got 84k on the clock. Going to book in for a test drive, it comes with a 3 month warranty.

Just wondering if there is anything I should look out for, before buying it.

Thanks

We have one 3 years only had 110km from memory. Had to put a new clutch in it the last few weeks. 1300 euros. The clutch is the achilles heel of these cars. You said your getting a 3 month warranty,if possible try and get a bit more or see if the garage will pay for a external 12 month warranty. That would give you piece of mind with the clutch. Fuel economy is early 40's around local roads short trips etc. Up in the late 50's on a long motorway run. Make sure the fuel filter has been changed. It's a bit of a pig to do because of location. When you go to the car for a test drive make sure it's cold and check 1st to 2nd gear and changing down from 3rd to 2nd they are notchy but if you feel resistance or it won't change up or down without force walk away

I bought mine 5 years ago from a dealer. It was third hand 62 plate and 130k miles or so on the clock. It has been pretty solid and has never let me down. It sat for 18months on the road during the wuflu pandemic and didn’t complain. Battery death is a natural thing, and I had to replace some brake components for one MOT but that’s wear and tear. It is comfortable, reliable and overall a great car.

Having said that I do currently have an issue where the alarm fob has stopped working as has the wing mirror retract switch. The windscreen also needs replacing and the seal around it seems to have failed as it gets iced up inside in the winter and a bit mouldy when left unused. I’m not a frequent nor high mileage driver though, so again I don’t put it down to specific issues with the car, merely a lack of sufficient love!

Give attention to the cooling system. The cylinder head is very sensitive to overheating. As simple problem as thermostat failure may cause the need of the head repair. Problem with the head may be masked by using "head gasket repair" liquid. So, in case of even smallest problems with cooling system during warranty go to the seller.

I bought the car but have a few issues with it. This car has 85k on the clock and isa 61 plate. It looks like its been looked after, nice and clean inside, but they've ****ed the boot so that has the worst repair I've ever seen done to it. That doesn't really bother me as its not causing any issues. But I do have a few more concerning issues with it.

Rear Passenger Wheel / Brake
When I got home from buying it, the rear passenger wheel was very very hot with a burning smell, possibly bearing or brake issue?

Steering Pulling to the left
After test driving around the streets for 10 mins, the car seemed fine. But once I got onto the motorway it was pulling to the left and I had a noise coming from the back of the car at around 60 mph and it was a little bumpy too. The steering was wobbly too, it felt like it was juddering. Now even at slow speeds the car pulls to the left and this isn't because of the slope of the roads, I drove on flat roads/car parks and this still happens.

Fuel Gauge
When I picked up the car the fuel like was on, flashing as it was very low on fuel. I topped the car up to about 50 litres and drove home. When I got home the car was just under half full. The next day I got in and the fuel was reading zero and I had the fuel light on again. I took it to the garage and put 40 litres in, that's all it took, so the fuel gauge was incorrect as I actually had 30 litres remaining (the tank is 70 litres).

Oil Level
The oil level low light keeps coming on, I reset it but this kept coming on. It was on when we bought the car but your colleague just told us it needs resetting and it will go away as he's just topped the car up with oil. The light has came on three times so far, but the oil level is fine.

I'm putting it in for a service and a check of everything at the garage on Tuesday. It does NOT have a full history and I can't see if/when any of the belts where changed. I have taken a big risk on this car as it doesn't have a service history. But it is a very nice car to drive. Will be even better if they can cover the wheel overheating issue, as its not safe to be on the road. They clearly didn't do thorough checks of the car before selling it to me.

What are the service intervals for these cars?

The model I have is: Hyundai i40 1.7 CRDi Premium Euro 5 5dr (2012)

Thanks

Michael

Check the oil level when the car is completely cold. Make sure it's not over full with oil. These cars when the DPF is playing up or is having incomplete regenerations dump the unused diesel into the oil sump which dilutes the s**t out of the oil. You'll seize an engine very quickly if this is the problem.

That sounds like the worst design ever. I'll give it a check, well I'll get the wife to as I'm away from home until Thursday. I'm looking at getting the people.who sold this to me so sort it out or I'm returning it. It seems like a decent car apart from the problems. 👍 Thanks again.

Got a few things fixed, the pulling on acceleration, braking must have been a dodgy front passenger tyre as that was changed today and it does.not do the pulling when braking of accelerating. Still pull slightly to the left but I think that's just the camber if the road.

Calliper was done and the garage gave me ÂŁ250 towards it.

Oil sensor still saying low level so will get that done on its.next service when the oil is changed. Fuel gauge is unreliable but that's a.bit expensive to fix so might just leave that for the time being. I fill it up to the rim every Sunday so it's not an issue at the moment.

I'm getting about 51mpg on my.motorway driving, not as good as my insignia where I get 65mpg. But it's a nice car to drive. Even though I bought what I thought was a duffer.
