Kickdown Delay

Has anyone else found that sometimes kickdown can take quite a time to happen. Sometimes when i go to use it the engine will rev up to the correct speed for the gear but there can be a delay before power is transmitted to the wheels (sometimes as long as three seconds). this only ocurrs when the transmission shifts from 4th to 2nd. If the gearbox is in 3rd gear or overdrive is switched off then it will kickdown as you would expect. The car has only done 3000 miles and this can occur when it is cold or hot, the ATF level is fine. anyone else with similar findings?? My car is a Rio 1.4 auto but i would like to know if anyone else has found this on there Rio/Accent or other Kia/Hyundai auto box, as it might just be a trait of kia/Hyundai auto transmissions.

Can't say I've noticed anything like that with my auto... It downshifts fine when I need it to, not much of a lag. Of course I rarely drive it hard enough to need to have it kick down, I try my best to be as easy on the transmission as possible.

thanks for the input, I talked to the dealership and the service manager didnt realy seem to have a clue what he was talking about. He told me that it was a 3 speed gearbox and 4th gear was when the torque converter damper cluch locked? seems he obviously hasn't read the service manual and specs for this gearbox as i know for a fact that its a 4 speed box with additional damper clutch. anyway they have agreed to let me drive there courtesy car to see if it exibits the same behaviour.

Just a quick post to sat that i test drove the demo car at my dealership and it behaved exactly the same as mine, so it must just be the design :p . The demo car was the same age as mine and had roughly the same miles on it but i was amazed at how much smoother the gear changes were on my car! guess i made the rite choice to duy the car brand new rather than buy the demo car which was offered to me! lol

My parents have a santa fe v6 with an auto ofcourse and i drove that before i got my accent (its a boat of a car) when i floored it, it first bogged in 4th then realized it needed to shift down to 2nd which honestly took about 2 seconds, its horrible, my sister drives an elantra gt automatic and its almost the same situation i dont know if its just me because this is my first manual car but autos downshift too slow...i think it's normal though i'm sure it doesn't hapeen with mercedes though ;)

... I've never had that problem, you might want to get that checked.

I run my car pretty hard and have never had a problem with a "kickdown", especially in a manual. Once in a while when I had my supercharged Regal, but only because the car had 100K on it. On the other hand I don't really care for the Tranny in the '08 Elantra GLS I just bought. Maybe it's because I'm used to driving a manual where the power is available at the movement of the shifter.
