Hi all I am assuming this question has been asked a few times but I cant quite see any direct answers. I have a 63 plate ix 35 with base model head unit with no blue tooth and I am looking to upgrade to a head unit with blue tooth and hands free.

Is it merely a case of purchasing a higher spec Hyundai head unit with these functions and installing or would I need to go with a third party head unit.

Thanks in advance

To answer your question: the wiring harness behind the head unit is likely to be slightly different and won't support a direct swap.

Personally I found the OEM NAV system horrible and outdated and I've gone third party for my head unit. I installed a Sony XAV-AX3005 (£350ish) which provides DAB+, FM/AM, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and a fast charge USB:

Installation was really simple compared to my other cars that I've replaced head units in. The trim panels are fairly easy to remove and there's plenty of space surrounding the head unit. You'll need a wiring harness adaptor to maintain OEM steering controls and a fascia kit, I've always used Connects2 branded kit and they've always worked flawlessly. Please be aware if you upgrade to a head unit with DAB+ you'll need a compatible aerial. I decided to replace the OEM roof aerial to a DAB+ / FM one which was the hardest part of the whole install, but you can use the windscreen style aerial. The reception isn't as good though!

I used www.caraudiosecurity.com for the Connects2 adapter kit. Their customer service has been fantastic each time I’ve used them and I’d definitely recommend them. There are several wiring harnesses available for the IX35, the one you need depends on the year and factory options you have.

pop into Halfords and have a play with some of the head units on show. I’m SO pleased with the Sony unit:
  • Really clean UI: I find most aftermarket stereos have naff interfaces that are too ‘bling’ with graphics and menus. The Sony’s is very simple and very intuitive
  • Responsive touchscreen
  • Boots v.quickly
  • Clean physical appearance
  • Easy install: the back is single DIN so you have even more space to tuck cables

And rightly so, I’d definitely recommend it too!

I ran the USB to the centre console. I drilled a small hole into it and then put a rubber grommet in to tidy it. As the USB cable is fixed to my head unit and it doesn’t have AUX input I removed the OEM USB/AUX.

The centre console trim is also fairly easily to remove with trim removal tools. Start with the trim panel below the two 12v ports. Once you’ve removed that it’s a case of putting light pressure on the ‘top’ trim panel where the cup holders are and it pops out. I took the opportunity to clean and hoover, it’s horrible how much muck finds its way under there!!

I think you’ll want this kit:Connects2 Ltd . Do confirm by removing your head unit first though.
