Our i30 (have to say OUR or my wife and children may be offended) is just 4 days and 800km old. Below is a summary of figures so far taken from the on board computer.

5.3l/100k on 300km trip with aircon going flat out, 4 people and luggage, driving between 80kph and 110kph and varying speed on open road, mostly in 4th and 5th.

4.6l/100k on flat road, no aircon, driver only, varying speed between 80kph and 100kph. I'm very pleased with that result.

I though of another factor which could have helped with fuel economy this morning on the way to work. It was cool (about 15 degree C) and I remember someone saying that diesel engines look to breath cool air. Just a thought.

I'm still at work, driving home later this evening after a meeting. Will report on the return trip later.

My first tank of fuel in my i30 SR Auto (Petrol) returned 9.3L/100km. Not too shabby for mostly around town driving! The official 'combined' (Highway & City driving) consumption for the SR auto is 7.6L/100km.

I'm being careful with driving but still varying speeds. Travelled a little slow last night when coming home in the dark (some roos out our way at night). With aircon on low and travelling between 70 and 100k, the trip meter gave an average of 4.4l/100k. Very impressed. :grin:

On the way home today, the i30 will clock up 1000k :beer:

WOW tjaliwalpa, that is impressive. I'm hoping that I can take the i30 on a long trip soon (down to Mackay and back, about an 800km return trip) to get some Highway figures. Should be interesting!

 

Find I'm averaging approximately 6.6-7.0l/100km for my everday driving which is very much stop start and traffic lights all the way.

Only real higfhway trip so far was around the 5l/100km mark. Mind you my climate control is on auto the whole time.

Your figure of 5l / 100k for highway sounds about the same as mine (when I'm using auto climate control).

Todays figures to work and back (around trip of about 150k) gave me a 5l / 100k average for the day. That is travelling out of the town I live in and on a very flat raod to the next town at the other ned of the journey. As it was hot today I used climate control

Yesterday I didn't use the aircon and I got an average of 4.5l / 100k.

Either way, I am happy with the result.

Trip computer shows average since last reset. I guess if you want the current you can reset it. Within 50m it should start giving you a new figure which will in effect be a new average, but you will lose the old average. I did this a few times on our first trip.

I don't know what diesel te dealer put in (they had it full when we took delivery). Our first and only fill was at United (Mildura). On Friday my wife will most likely refill at Caltex as we have a 10c per litre discount on our Woolworths card to use.

At the next refill I shall try to work out a figure which will give some indication of the acuracy of the trip computer's l / 100k.

Today's fuel economy is down somewhat. It was a very hot day and I used the climate control on auto today. I also traveled up around the speed limit on the roads I drove on. overall trip computer reading was 5.4l/100k.

Interestingly, the distance to empty seems to be coming closer to a realistic figure. Since filling up we have done 772kand it is saying we have 122k to empty. The guage is now half way between 1/4 and empty. When we fill up tomorrrow, we will have more of an idea about the accuracy of distance to empty and the accuracy of the fuel guage.

Thanks Bob, was just wondering what is the best diesel fuel and if one helps economy more than another. i read where someone said there is aditives that help economy with diesels but thats as much as i know.

Today my wife took the i30 for its free service. She filled the car before which revealed the following:

Fuel added: 47.41 litres
Distance covered: 852 km
That equates to 5.56 litres per 100km

The distance to empty indicated 60 km. After filling the car the distace to empty jumped to 620km.

From this I deduce the distance to empty gets closer to a realistic figure closer to empty, and even then it is very conservative.

I have been interested in the accuracy of the trip computer's litres / 100k reading. To test it out, we filled up and reset all sections of the trip computer and never reset them until we filled up again.

Results showed that the trip computer's accuracy came within .04 of the manual calculations based on fuel added and distance travelled.

The manual calculation gave 5.34 litres / 100k whle the trip computer gave a reading of 5.3 litres / 100k.

The above figures included some winding country road driving, some highway driving up to speed limits of 100kph and 110kph, and some driving within town limits, 468km in total. We added 25 litres.

Hi All
Took the i30 to Melbourne for the weekend (from Adelaide). The car made it so easy, nice and comfy, and overtaking in 5 th gear simple.Best of all was the consumption 750km on 39l which gives 5.2l/ 100km .The winds were pretty strong and the aircon was on the whole time as the temp was between 38 and 42.On the return trip we stoped at Horsham for the night and filled up the next day, economy a bit higher at 5.9 but still good.Car has now done 5500km and no problems so far.

That's great Ian, can't wait to get mine . they said 8 to 12 weeks wait, but thats life i guess, think i'll take SX Diesel 5 speed. they said can get cruise control. fitted after but not from factory. you boys should think about that as makes long drives even easier.

We are finding that we can get fuel economy figures at the respectable end and the acceptable end with our i30. Last week saw us averaging 5.1l/100k overall when we filled up on Saturday, some 490k having been covered since last filling up.

My wife has been the least fugal in her driving, but made a determined effort to drive smoothly on the way home on Saturday and believe it or not, got 4.7 on the trip computer after filling up. She is normally more heavy footed than I am so this was a real achievement for her. I think having the trip computer in front of you on the SLX is a big help.

I remind everyone that most of our driving is on open roads between country towns, with some driving within those towns.

We are really loving driving our i30 SLX diesel. It is soon to be anointed with its new rego plates, OURI30.

Just had mine replaced with the Euro one, looks very nice, especially from the front.

 

Latest figures.

Filled up today. Had covered 775km and got 5.0 l per 100k.

I was a little disappointed. A few days ago we had achieved 4.8 and then the Hyundai dealer sent a driver to pick up our i30 for some checking relating to an engine issue. When he returned it some 150k later it was up to 5.2. After 3 days of careful driving I got it back to 5.0.

Even the wife is now conscious of her driving technique and less of a rev head (LOL).

Bob here (yet again). I am more and more convinced that provided you drive carefully, without being heavy footed, It is possible to get 5.0l per 100k or just under that. Filled up again having done 298k and got a fuel consumption of 4.8l per 100k. This included a drive into Adelaide through the hills on the SE Freeway and return, plus of course some city driving. I never really noticedany increased fuel consumption in the city, but then Adelaide is not Sydney or Melbourne.

I am finding manual calculation of fuel consumption matches the trip computer. As I said elsewhere, the trip computer's distance to empty is out at the top end but zeros in on a more accurate estimate closer to empty. I am wondering if the trip computer is learning its maximum distance to empty. On Saturday it gave 725k after filling up and today it gave 763k. Interesting?

Overall, we are very happy with the fuel consumption figures we are getting.

Hi again,

Just filling everyone in on the latest fuel economy figures. Put some more fuel in today., but did not fill up.

Have done 890km since last filling up and the trip meter said I had 135k to empty. Put in 21.6l and the guage went up to just over half full. The trip computer now says I have 479k to empty. I figure that last figure is way out, probably by as much as 100k.

Overall, this last tank of diesel has resulted in the trip computer giving an average consumption of 4.9l/100k

I'm all smiles at this end
