Hyundai Veracruz Reliability-how Will It Compare?

In late 2005 I started conducting my own reliability research. I'm reporting absolute stats like "times in the shop" that will make the differences between cars much clearer. Relative ratings obscure too much--how large is the difference between "better than average" and "worse than average"? I’ll also be updating results four times a year, so there will be information on new models sooner.

Participants report repairs the month after they occur using a one-page survey form. When there are no repairs, they simply report an approximate odometer reading four times a year, at the end of each quarter.

I'd like to include the Veracruz in this research. All I need is for about a dozen owners to sign up, and I'll start collecting data. I'm already collecting data on most competitors, and will have results for the 2007 MDX, Acadia, and Outlook in August.

To encourage participation, panel members will receive full access to the results free of charge.

I'm surprised this forum isn't receiving more traffic. Is the Veracruz not attracting nearly as much interest as the competition from Mazda and GM? I'll have data on the GM crossovers next month, and data on the Mazda in November.

Because too few Veracruz owners have signed up to help out, I haven't even started collecting data on it yet.

I think part of the problem is that the vehicle was only released a couple of months ago. So there probably isn't an established user base yet. I only joined this forum to find a solution to integrating an ipod or other audio device with the stock stereo. Also, owners probably haven't had it in the shop yet.

My back up system wasn't working when I bought it. I kept asking the salesman if it was supposed to beep constantly when you back up. He said it was working. Well, after purchasing and reading the manual it was obviously not working. So they appologized, ordered the part and fixed it the next week. I got a loaner car and probably the best service I've ever had at a dealership. The other day I noticed some padding between the dash and windshield that didn't look like it was seated properly. So I tucked it in and it seems fine now. Other than that I'm kind of disappointed that there is no aux input for the stereo. And I'm not sure if my auto-sensing wipers actually work or not. I'll have them check when I take it in for the first oil change.

Even though they are called auto wipers, you still need to turn them on. Rotate the wiper control to select auto. when it rains, push the stalk down one notch to activate. When it rains just a little, it wipes just a little and get progressively faster as heavier rain falls. Works very well. :57:

I just saw my first 2 on the road yesterday, one was a Silver SE and the other a Blue SE. The sales manager just got rid of his demo at the dealer I work for. It has 4,550 miles on it and the leather on the driver's side looks horrible. It looks very worn. Otherwise it seems to been holding up.

I have the little black dome sensors up by the windshield on the dash. But there is no text on the stalk that says "Auto". Does yours? Basically the manual makes it sound like you turn it on and adjust the speed manually. The ones in my VW Passat worked good and turned on when needed.

People have been emailing me for reliability info on the Veracruz, but I still need more owners to sign up before I can start collecting data. If you own one, please consider participating. I will provide the best, most detailed informtion my sample size allows.

If it does not have an identified "auto" marking on the stalk, I seriously doubt you have the option. Mine has a clearly identified auto position.

Have had my Veracruz sine the end of July. It is a Canadian GLS AWD, that is more in tune with the US Limited.

SO far, with 2000 miles, no complaints whatsoever. The VC runs smooth, cannot feel the tranny shifting, quiet, comfortable, and extremely smooth and quiet on the highway.

Gas consumption is fine, although some may balk at the posted numers, or their actual performance. Compared to my previous vehicle, an 04 GTP CompG Grand Prix, supercharged premium fuel, the gas mileage is great.

Overall, so far, extremely satisfied. Would have preferred the Canadian Limited edition with rear DVD, upgraded stereo, power tilt/telescopic wheel, 110v inverter. illuminated scuff plates, power rear hatch and passenger pwr seat, however, all Cdn models do come AWD with leather, conversation mirror, 18" tires/wheels, fog lamps, rain sensitive wipers, pwr drivers seat, dual zone climate control, and a host of other stuff.

I would defintiely recommend this vehilce to anyone looking for such, based on my ownership over the past two+ months.

Not as soon as I'd hoped, but we'll finally have a partial result for the 2008 Veracruz in the May results. It's looking like the 2007 will again fall short. Enough owners are signed up, but not enough are participating. Still two weeks in the month, though, so it could still happen..

We have updated results for the Veracruz to include owner experiences through March 2009. In terms of successful repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2008: 105, worse than average

2007: 48, about average, close to "better than average"

Very small sample sizes in both cases. Which explains the large difference between the two model years--these results are unfortunatley not accurate. The actual repair rate is probably in between these results for both years.

A big thank you to this forum and everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in August and November. With more participants, we could provide more precise information and cover all model years.

I bought a 2007 VeraCruz Limited with all the options, leather, third seat, et cetera, including the DVD player, in September 2007 and have had nothing but problems. Initially, it was a dead battery the day after I took delivery. Then the radio ... XM worked fine, but the local AM stations were pfzzzt! Then the onboard computer had to be replaced. The memory settings have never worked consistently without the key being in the ignition (it's supposed to be keyless ignition). The backup warning periodically has fits where it will beep constantly while in reverse despite there being nothing behind me ... and yes, I do make sure the sensors are clean. The front struts have been replaced twice because after 5000 or 10000 miles they develop a loud "groan" sound. I do NOT drive it "off road" ... I'm 70 years too old for that foolishness.

See my new topic question about the keyless ignition and memory settings problem because I'm angry that I paid for two expensive options (keyless ignition/entry plus memory settings) and only have one that's functional. The last time (about the fifth) I took it to the dealer they told me the system "had lost its memory" and they fixed it. NOT!!

I'm also angry about the radio. It's been replaced once but it still sucks as far as local AM stations are concerned. I think they put a crap radio in it to promote the sale of the XM subscriptions.

I'll never buy another Hyundai again. Worst car I ever bought, considering it was supposed to be a luxury car with all the bells and whistles.

If I am reading this right, you replaced the radio, because the AM reception was poor? That's pretty nit picky if thats the case. But I am curious about the noise from your struts, I hope my 2008 Veracruz does not do the same.
