2003 Elantra gt pos at 120,000 miles

On 2nd trans and 2nd gear synchro is going out same as the it did on the 1st trans.

Electrical problems have been insane stereo clock, alternator, 120 volt main fuse, and a good number of sensors with no shorts ever found. Headlights do not last more than 3 months. ECU is throwing codes for nearly everything but nothing is wrong with what the codes are for so the ECU is bad or going bad. The Hyundai techs are useless. It took an independent shop to diagnose the ECU as the problem.

Car dose not idle right probably do to the ECU

All of this happened outside of the warranty period. Still owe on it and it will be in a junkyard by the end of the year.

My last car was a 1992 Mazda protege that went 15 years and 320,000 miles. I will never buy another Hyundai again.

Good luck people good luck

2001 ELANTRA ABOUT 270,000 ONE OWNER RUN THE CRAP OUT OF IT BUT LOVE IT DEARLY, CAN'T PASS LIKE SHE USED TOO , STARTED USING 15W40 ALONG WITH LUCAS ADDITIVES FOR TRANS/CRANK/FUEL
WHEN I DO A HWY RUN AND TOP IT UP WITH 50 L AND I DON'T PUSH IT I GET OVER 700KM. BUT THIS PAST WEEKED AFTER AN OIL CHANGE WENT ABOUT 250KM HWY ON JUST OVER A 1/4 TANK.

OLDER CARS CHANGE THE OIL/FILTER MORE THAN USUAL

Over 340,000kms on my 2001 Elantra. Original clutch -- Replaced wheel bearings front right and left as well as tie rods -- Replaced pads but the rest of the braking system is original -- Had one overheating issue two winters ago which turned out to be a bad thermostat. I'm developing rust bubbles around the rear wheel wells and a couple of spots on the roof.

That's it for work on my vehicle besides basic maintenance like oil, filters, coolant replacement, etc.

It has been such a good car that I bought a new 2009 Azera.

Mines a baby in diaper's in company of veteran's. Have an 2005 Elantra GLS which has run just 18000 kms; yes, you read it right: eighteen thousand kms. Guess I'm still pussyfooting my baby; at this rate probably she'll last a life time. Know what, I have the original tyres and the battery. I get her serviced once a year

I have 130,000 on mine.

I bought this 2003 on 9/08, used for $3995. It had 100,000 miles on it. So I bought a 3 year/45000 warrenty on it. Most of it wasnt covered. Since then, these are SOME of the problems I took in:

1. Lost power steering the 2nd day I had it
2. all Bearings were bad
3. Ball and joint went bad
4. eletrical system went
5. Fuse went
6. Sensors are bad
7. Had to get new break pads and rotors
8. Windshield wiper motor went on it.
9. Of course had to get 2 new headlights.

Did I get a bargain or what??

Basically, you got a raw deal. If the ECU is the problem, it costs a fortune to replace. Car looks like its falling apart. Cap'n abandon ship: that would be my advice.

2003 Elantra 145k miles (55k of which I've put on) and its paid off :) 2nd owner, (since 2006) I've replaced alternator, thermostat (twice, my fault), battery, 4 tires, radiator, normal (oil, brake pads etc) and it will more than likely need another battery, 2 tires, and front axle. I'm pretty lucky that my boyfriend is a painter/bodyman and his brother a mechanic so I mostly just pay for parts.

I have been having odd electrical problems lately, before the headlights would blink on and off when I turned on my turn signal or when it clicked off. Last night the battery light came on and then today the battery died all together. We can jump it but the battery is only about 9 months old, that was replaced at the same time as the alternator. I did have a crack in the top of my radiator so there was fluid everywhere and maybe that was an issue? When I drive the car the battery does not charge which makes me think its the alternator, like driving 5 miles to the store and back this morning the speedometer stopped working on the way home (while I was driving, the needle just dropped and that was it). I do have a spare alternator so hopefully tonight they're going to try and replace that to see if that is the issue but I was curious to find out if anyone has an opinion as to what could be causing this issue.

Other that this I love my Hyundai, when the govt did the Cash for Clunkers thing I was seriously thinking about buying another Hyundai with my boyfriends Cadillac. I don't know what I'm going to do when I do have to replace this one, I'm very attached to it now!

I've noticed the same problem when I had a failing alternator. When it stops charging enroute, the battery voltage will start dropping after it drops too low the tach and speedometer will both go off. I assume an accessory relay not getting enough voltage opens it contacts which are supplying power to the tach and speedometer. You either have a battery going out, one shorted cell bringing your voltage down to 10. 5 volts instead of 12 volts not enough to charge the battery or keep the relay closed. In my case the carbon brushes had used up their lifetime and could no longer make contact with the armature of the alternator. Therefore no output from alternator and battery slowly discharges while your driving giving the symptoms you are seeing.

I have a 2001 Elantra, 125,000 miles. I got it from the dealer with 5miles on it. I have loved it!! Other than general maintenance (tires, oil changes, etc.) on;y had to replace transmissions sensor $90, MAPP sensor $5, and radiator $200. Not bad for an 8 year old car that I have not had a car payment on in 3.5 years. I am seriously tempted by the Genesis. Will probably keep the Elantra as the grocery getter / dirty job car!!

I own a 2002 elantra gt , and i have 220,000 kms on it. It is a comfortable car to drive, this car has seen alot of highways
I have taken it on many road trips and has completed them everytime without breakdowns. I use supertech 5W30 pure synthetic oil and FRAM oil filters everytime, still does not burn oil.

But keep in mind all these kms do come with major repairs, three wheel bearings have been replaced.
On my second set of rotors and fourth set of brake pads. (brakes do suck on this car)
Ehaust manifold and cat converter replaced aswell as exhaust flex pipe.
On second timing belt and water pump, also second set drive belts.
Replaced starter motor also on second engine thermostat.

This car needs some TLC and regular maintenance to operate well , does not hold up anywhere close to a Honda civic or Toyota Corolla, but than again it is cheaply made Hyundai were talking about.....
