Hood Protector Or Film?

With all the rock chip stories around I'm thinking it might be a good idea to get some form of protection for the car when I pick up my gray GL next week.

What are all your experiences with film protector or the hood protector? If you're running a hood protector, do you like the look of it?

I think the film would definitely provide better coverage, but for me, I feel the deflector is sufficient.

I installed the deflector on my black GLS and find it blends in quite well. I find it to look very nice and actually adds a sporty touch! I think it would look great on the grey. I posted pics of it in another topic, but I cannot seem to remember which topic that was. I will try to post some pics for you tonight!

I got the Ventureshield film on the bumper, headlights, hood and mirrors last week. It looks good and you really don't know it's on unless you get within 5 feet of the vehicle. As far as performance, I'll let someone who has had it over an extended time comment on that. I'm happy with my choice though.

I don't like the tacked-on look of the hood deflector, and of course, it does nothing to protect your bumper from collecting stone chips by the dozen. 3M shield is the way I went. No regrets. Yes, you can see the line on the hood where the film ends, but only when you are right on top of it. It's more or less invisible from 3 or 4 paces away. And in any case, it is FAR less visually distracting than a hood dfelctor.

Your loss is my win. I love the look of the hood deflector. It adds a sporty finish to the front end of the car. I understand it won't do anything for the exposed bumpers, but it does protect the seam/gap of where the hood rests (the shield wraps under the front edge of the bumper). Also, I just wanted to use it to deflect any stones from hitting the top of the hood when travelling highway speeds. So far, it has proven to be effective and aesthetically pleasing.

I remember seeing the pics you posted in the other thread, but can't recall which thread. I thought it looked really good on your black car as it blended in well. Would probably look good on the gray color to. But personally, I don't think it would look right on a light color like mine.

I have been giving the paint protectant film alot of thought lately. It seems like every time I wash the car I find a new paint chip.

1- I have PPTape on the hood, entire bumper, first quarter of the fenders, mirrors, lightbeams and fog lamps, it does not show unless you give a closer look and pay attention (judge by my picture below)

2- The hood deflector may be good but does not protect the hood from heavy rocks, only small ones get deflected by it. It does not protect the bumper and lights, they will yellowish, like sandblasted, within a few years.

3- It may be hard to wash the area under the hood deflector and leaves and debris may deposit between the hood and the deflector.
4- The choice is yours. (Maybe both the film and deflector would provide maximum protection)

^^^ Good example of just how close to invisible the clear shields are. Nice looking car, too - LOVE that red.

Thanks a lot Jaeger, I love the Venetian red too. We only start to notice the film when there's dust on the hood. I had the same film on my previous car and my hood and bumper were like new when I traded in the car for the Elantra. I did want the same protection for my beautiful Elantra :)

PS: there are more pics of my car in the ''post your pictures here'' topic.

The hood and bumper of my previous car looked like they had been sprayed with buckshot after only 4 years (about 80% of my driving is highway). I had the 3M put on my Sonata for the first time and am very happy I did. Wish I had done the headlights, fogs and sideview mirrors, too.

I am just curious how long you ran the previous car with the film applied. I wonder about the longevity of the product as far as yellowing or discoloration is concerned.

Also, has anyone ever had to remove the film, and if so did it damage the paint in any way by doing so?

Looks great! Would you have a link to the PPTape product.

I ran my previous car 4 years, the film was not yellow at all, it was guarantied not to become yellow even after many years, after 4 years it was still like new, you can wax it just like you'd do with paint. it did a good job since the hood and bumper were like new behind the film, the company told me it was not hard to remove if you wish to remove it someday.

Hi I posted a link on another topic about protective film, you can find a shop in the US and Canada, if you can't find it I will try later to find it for you. It's late I'm going in bed. Good night. :)

The hood deflector on my Santa Fe protects maybe 3% of my vehicle, and collects leaves that are nearly impossible to remove. Never again. And I don't care for the Saran Wrap solution, either. It offers very limited protection, and mars the appearance of the shiny paint you're trying so hard to keep beautiful. What's the point?

I say save your money, enjoy the car's shiny factory appearance, and when s*** happens get some polishing compound or touch-up paint. You're going to need it anyway. My new black Elantra has already incurred a few scratches and dings, all on the sides of the vehicle where these aftermarket products do nothing.

The longest I've had a vehicle with film was 11 years. No yellowing at all. Probably lost some of it's shine, but it's such a gradual change that you don't notice it. Don't remember the brand, but have been using 3M lately. Comes in several thicknesses. Difficult to apply on curved areas. Let an expert do it.

Someone asked about removal. No problem using a hair dryer.

My recommendation is the installation of a clear bra - it's invisible, does not take away the lines of the vehicle, does Not increase drag - better mpg and the coverage is usually much better then the bug shield. The clear bra will not look ugly after a few years - the shields tend to weathered or faded. Also some shields are similar to a vinyl bra and allow normal everyday no fading (shielded from the sun) under the shield/bra. Just my thoughts on the subject. :)

Don, I totally agree with your assessment! My brother in law has a 2005 Acura Tl and has the film on the front of his car and I can see the lines where it starts and stops and it looks like it also shows where it's been waxed with buildup etc...

Mar the paint?? Well, my paint doesn't look marred to me - of course, you ropinion may differ. As for it offering very limited protection, I would definitley disagree - it offers complete protection to the areas covered.

I wax right over the film and don't have any problem with buildup at the line.
