Dear Friends,

This week has been a very exceptional one. So many things have happened; I feel that finally the pieces are falling in to place. The last few months were very challenging in every aspect, but the hard work starts to pay off.

During the development of the product, I tried to stick to my deepest value of being as completely transparent and honest as possible. I took on a personal challenge; to bring to market a product of an exceptional value of performance versus price. Like you, I’m tired of paying exaggerated prices to buy what I really need and want. I’m a newborn in the business; however I think I can bring some fresh air where you and I can be in a win-win situation.

In my mind, and from the beginning, I decided to approach the market in a different way. From the beginning I decided that my main goal would be to beat the portable navigation systems at their own game and integrate a class leading comprehensive GPS solution into an integrated media device. I encourage the customers to consider and compare both options (my integrated solution and the off the shelf standalone GPS devices) and buy accordingly to their needs.

The most difficult task was to build the business according to the above ideal by respecting the profit margins of my suppliers. Compass-NAV, as a company, was founded to minimize the overhead and therefore minimize the impact on final price. I’m in a position today where I can certainly say: “Mission completed”. I was able to create a horizontal business structure to eliminate the waste of money. The whole structure sits on the network of people found on this forum. From the manuals creator, the website designer or the “guinea pig”, everything is working cohesively using today’s technology. The most important thing to mention is all of the participants of this thread that have been following me since the beginning, THANK YOU!! If this thread is growing more than ever, it’s all because of you…. Nothing less.

Today, I can certainly declare that we have in our hands a true master piece of mobile entertainment. The CN-M5 raised the bar in this category in Korea and I’m pleased to integrate their technology to our flavor. We won’t stop it here; we have the room to grow bringing even more exciting features.

Now I’m pleased to present the final offering of the CN-M5 integrated navi-tainment system for your Sonata, look for the “EXCLUSIVES” to Compass NAV’s product. No other vendor offers these features!!

Technology:
The reason why it integrates so well with existing factory features is because the foundation IS from the factory. Let me explain. Most of the offerings today replace the entire radio and dash components to make it “look” factory. The reality is those manufacturers are using a generic box and they adapt it the best they can to your car. The problem is they can’t integrate perfectly because it would cost them too much money to adapt it 100%, thus loosing XM, steering wheel controls etc…. Our approach is different; we use your current factory radio. Yes! The metal box with the tuners and amplifiers of your existing car, we just remove the face of it thus removing only the keypad and the LCD screen only. That leaves the factory flat ribbon cable and the Bluetooth antenna out of the metal box. That ribbon cable is interfaced with a controller module that converts the messages sent and received by the old face and sent now to our Tablet PC. In reality you keep the master component that retains your factory features but they are now going thru a touchscreen interface.

For those of you who are still sketical, please note that I was present last week when Charles installed a unit into a new Sonata off the dealer's lot. Charles was very clean & organized. He worn latex gloves, covers were placed on the seat & floor where his tools & unit might be placed. There were a couple of wires that had to be spliced. The quick way would to wrap the wires together & then use black tape. Charles did not take the cheap way out, he wrapped the wires, soldered & then placed shrink wrap teflon over the joint.
After completion, the car was vacuumed, & the dashboard was polished. An initial test at his facility & then a road test where all features of the NAV system was checked out before he returned the car back to the dealer so their customer could take posession.

I am next in line to buy a system for my 2013 Elantra GLS

Install complete

Hi all,

The install I performed on Friday went very well. I actually installed it around my work schedule (I work from home) and installed the backup camera too. The instructions worked very well, some little confusing pieces, but working with charles we resolved the little glitch. I will upload some final pictures soon.

I did have one interesting issue, when I pulled off my original dash trim 2 of the white plastic retaining clips ejected themselves into the black hole of the dash board. These are available readily from the dealer for about 50-75 cents each but ensure tight fitment.

Care to elaborate on what issues you ran into? I plan to do the installation this weekend and any hints will help.

Thanks.:)

What do you mean? I think updates are pretty much as good as anything else. As he has made more improvements i think they were free. And maps aren't but I don't know of any similar kind (built in) that are? As far as business longevity after 3 years is kind of irrelevant.

" With the new temp sensor I was seriously looking...but alas, no lifetime updates..."

I have a Garmin with the same Navteq maps and features plus it has lifetime updates. Having this unit would have been nice simply as a "built-in" unit, but it offers me less than what I currently have, unless I were to decide that the backup camera is worth the price of this unit.

I would have jumped if the price was good and included lifetime map updates. My opinion. Why is it wrong?

I didn't say wrong, but thats not an apples to apple comparison. If your happy with what you have awesome. But comparing this to equivalent hardware I think its as good of deal as any. Garmin now gives lifetime because cell phones have massively hit their industry with google maps and directions which I use and is cool and has free updating and the nav software is probably about as good as anything else out there. Buying a unit like this imo the nav is only one of the upgrades/features. You also get the better screen display, adds some value to your car, and I really like how it looks. (I don't have one... yet). But I guess it just depends what your goals are in purchasing.

Was finally able to complete my installation this past weekend. Had a couple of interesting occurrences but Charles was always there to help. Specifically, I mis-connected the GPS power to the seat belt/air bag connector and ended up shorting out power and ground and blowing the module 1 7.5A fuse. I was scared to shreds not knowing what the **** happened as the symptom for this was that the dash lights were all off with no speedometer or tachometer readings and no power to windows. Thanks to Charles for the great customer service and assistance with troubleshooting and diagnosing the issue.

So far the system is working great and even the dealership people were impressed with the look and response of the system when I went in for an oil and filter change.

Overall I'm quite happy with my purchase. Just now need to rewire the backup camera wire as the wire called out in the manual doesn't apply to my car based on manufacture date.

Attached are some pictures after the install.

Just want to comment on the navigation part of Charles's system. Had my unit installed last week and have been playing around with the navigation for about a week. This is so so so much better and smarter than my 4 years old Garmin. I know it is not fair to compare the latest system to a product was made 4 years ago, but just want to share something that made me amazed what this system can do.

First the loading speed. It literally only takes less than 10 seconds to load the map. Compare to my old Garmin, you need to use minutes instead of seconds to count it's loading speed.

Second the speed of picking up satellite's signal. I live in a valley area. My old Garmin really has troubles to pick up the signal. But this is not the case for Charles's system. It picks up the signal so fast to a point that I was still in the garage, buckle my seat-belt, plug in my ipod, and then the map had already show the correct the position. Wow, no more waiting for searching the satellite's signal!

Third the intelligence of the unit. When comes to alternative routes, road construction, traffic jam and other circumstances a driver my encounter, I don't know how smart the newest Garmin will be, but at least my 4 years old Garmin is very stubborn, always force me to go back to the road that has bad traffic or road construction. But Charles's unit is so smart, it really guides you, instead of insist its own route. For instance, it will offer you alternative route when noticing your speed is slow, the avoid function always monitor where you are, and let you easily to pick which highway, road or section you want to avoid now. And there are many more!

Fourth, the map. My old Garmin has 2011 map. Not the latest, but not too old either. There are quite a few roads, restaurants, library still missing in my Garmin's 2011 map. Those roads, restaurants have already been built for at least 5 years, but still not in Garmin's map. But they are in Charles's system! So I guess, although this system does not include life time map update, but without updating the map, still can make me ahead of the Garmin for a few years. Plus, how many years a person will expect to drive a same car? Probably not a lifetime. So lifetime map updating for a in dash navigation system might not necessary.

There are many more benefits I get from this system, like no more dropping GPS in the middle of the driving, no more constantly hiding the GPS from the thief, no more extra cable hanging from the windshield.

Definitely prefer the option that keeps the CD slot up top without losing the cubby space. I will definitely purchase the unit if it is manufactured that way. To be honest I'm not sure I'd purchase it as shown in the picture while losing the lower cubby area.

I've read through all the pages but I haven't seen that the outside temp issue is resolved, though I did see your picture of the module for it. Are all units now shipping with the temp module?

Looking forward to your final decision on the 6-CD issue. I REALLY want to purchase your product and hope you go with the top slot version.

Thanks for all your hard work and your dedication to customer service!

Hi Golfnut,

The way things are going, the top CD slot is the prefered choice so far. I'll speaqk with factory but I was told they were fine with both.

As far the tempsensor, the 2011 Limited is supported nativery from the CAN BUS, not much of an issue here.

Thanks for the good words!

New Radio UI for Sonata

Dear friends,

I just wanted to drop a quick word and also show our progress with the outside temp sensor. The Sonata radio will benefit of a whole new interface similar to the below. This is just a draft... just a draft. The key names will be as it's supposed to be. We still need to add few visual candies but bottom line this is our foundation.

Let me know your inputs as we are still at the design stage! Keep it mind that our branding is to be "luxury factory look"

Charles

Having the time as "13:59 pm" is redundant. Personally; I would lose the AM/PM altogether. If you can't tell if it's morning or night; you probably shouldn't be driving. It's like putting C or F for the temperature, you just don't need it.

#1,252 ·
I think it should allow a choice of 12h/24h time display. You may live somewhere that you can tell (and thus be allowed to drive) but either showing 12h with the meridian or 24h without is standard design. Remember though that there are some places with up to 22 hours of sunlight at certain times of the year. Should residents of those areas not be driving then? I think your point was made after the word "redundant".
