Dear Friends,

This week has been a very exceptional one. So many things have happened; I feel that finally the pieces are falling in to place. The last few months were very challenging in every aspect, but the hard work starts to pay off.

During the development of the product, I tried to stick to my deepest value of being as completely transparent and honest as possible. I took on a personal challenge; to bring to market a product of an exceptional value of performance versus price. Like you, I’m tired of paying exaggerated prices to buy what I really need and want. I’m a newborn in the business; however I think I can bring some fresh air where you and I can be in a win-win situation.

In my mind, and from the beginning, I decided to approach the market in a different way. From the beginning I decided that my main goal would be to beat the portable navigation systems at their own game and integrate a class leading comprehensive GPS solution into an integrated media device. I encourage the customers to consider and compare both options (my integrated solution and the off the shelf standalone GPS devices) and buy accordingly to their needs.

The most difficult task was to build the business according to the above ideal by respecting the profit margins of my suppliers. Compass-NAV, as a company, was founded to minimize the overhead and therefore minimize the impact on final price. I’m in a position today where I can certainly say: “Mission completed”. I was able to create a horizontal business structure to eliminate the waste of money. The whole structure sits on the network of people found on this forum. From the manuals creator, the website designer or the “guinea pig”, everything is working cohesively using today’s technology. The most important thing to mention is all of the participants of this thread that have been following me since the beginning, THANK YOU!! If this thread is growing more than ever, it’s all because of you…. Nothing less.

Today, I can certainly declare that we have in our hands a true master piece of mobile entertainment. The CN-M5 raised the bar in this category in Korea and I’m pleased to integrate their technology to our flavor. We won’t stop it here; we have the room to grow bringing even more exciting features.

Now I’m pleased to present the final offering of the CN-M5 integrated navi-tainment system for your Sonata, look for the “EXCLUSIVES” to Compass NAV’s product. No other vendor offers these features!!

Technology:
The reason why it integrates so well with existing factory features is because the foundation IS from the factory. Let me explain. Most of the offerings today replace the entire radio and dash components to make it “look” factory. The reality is those manufacturers are using a generic box and they adapt it the best they can to your car. The problem is they can’t integrate perfectly because it would cost them too much money to adapt it 100%, thus loosing XM, steering wheel controls etc…. Our approach is different; we use your current factory radio. Yes! The metal box with the tuners and amplifiers of your existing car, we just remove the face of it thus removing only the keypad and the LCD screen only. That leaves the factory flat ribbon cable and the Bluetooth antenna out of the metal box. That ribbon cable is interfaced with a controller module that converts the messages sent and received by the old face and sent now to our Tablet PC. In reality you keep the master component that retains your factory features but they are now going thru a touchscreen interface.

Retain all your factory features such as:

I received mine, but I'm still waiting on the trim piece I had to order for the trunk. Then I'll have to get it scheduled for professional installation. I could probably handle the installation myself if I really wanted to, but my wife has doubts. I secretly agree with her on this one, mostly because I don't want to risk messing anything up with the hybrid system.

CompassNav Installed

Finally got my CN-M5 installed and so far I'm happy with its features. Going to play around with it for a couple more days to make a final review of its advancements and limitations. I'm a instant gratification type of guy and I must say the nav boot up is fast!

The install wasn't hard but it wasn't a "walk in the park" either. Patience is key and follow the install instructions carefully. I got with Charles for a few issues I ran into. Charles was always right there with a quick reply and a solution. Keep up the great customer service Charles!!

The back-up cam I installed works like a charm after Charles showed me another way to hook up +12v without having to run a wire all the way back to the back-up light connector. Parking assist, up and running. Oh and did I say the nav boot up was fast? :)

I will say though that my wait was well worth it.....

Just bought Sonata GLS 2013 last week. CN-M5 is exactly the things I'm looking for. But have a few questions:

1 Will this unit fit my 2013 Sonata perfectly?
2 I'm NOT a handy man at all. Thought about take it to my mechanic to install it. But it seems can take pretty long to install it. Any rough estimate how many hours will take including installing backup camera?
3 I'm thinking maybe it will cost me less if I ask my friend to install it for me. But what's the skill level need to install this unit?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Luchi,

Thanks for your request,

No problems, it is perfectly compatible with your 2013 Sonata system and it will enhance its fuctionality for sure. Not only you add a nav but also is very competent system on the multimedia side and you can pretty much operate most of the features from the steering wheel.

I'm able to install a system, including the backup camera within 4 hours but a newbie will probably take a whole day.

I paid a lot of attention writting the installation manuals and still a work in progress from comments of my customers.

I would say it's not easy like boiling water but not too difficult either. If you READ the instructions step by step, you should be fine.

Please get in touch with me by email and we will take it from there! compass-nav@videotron.ca

Thanks

Charles

Charles:

I know you are a super busy man, and everybody has different needs and questions, you did very well to put your customers first. But I do wish you can make a video that show main steps of how to install this unit including the backup camera. It does not need to very detail, after all, we can read your written instruction. Sometimes it may take one page to just describe a very simple step if we can see it.

Video tutorial

I think a video is a great idea, but we have been putting a LOT of time into getting the manual the way it needs to be, along with Charles troubleshooting peoples installs. I think going forward it will be beneficial, when I get mine I may look to affix a camera to the car to monitor the installation, then we can edit it. I am in the next wave of orders so will not be in the next few weeks but will work towards it.

There are certain parts of the installation where an actual video may help. Such as removal of the trim. Of course after I removed it once, it was very simple, but at first I wasn't sure if I should be pulling up, out, sideways or what. Also a video of removing the rear trim for the installation of the BU cameramight be beneficial

Maybe a video of the parts that need cut actually being cut? I actually used a cut off wheel to remove that stud and welded on part that supported the head unit, which I found much easier than trying to bend back and forth with vice grips. I also used a little pneumatic saw to cut away the plastic support behind the original factory instillation to make room for the deeper recessed new installation.

All in all, it's really not a difficult instillation. If you take you time and double check the wires before any attaching or soldering, you will be fine. (like I should have done)

I couldn't be happier, and it makes my dash look a thousand times better! Even the salesman that sold me the car was really impressed when I showed it to him a few days ago :)

I just had mine installed by Charles yesterday on my 2.0T. I must say that my first impression on Navi is great!! My new Garmin was confused in downtown Montreal , it was lost couple of times if the streets were too close to each other....however my CompassNav unit never got lost once. So far so good, everything working as advertised. Drove 700kms back home yesterday and I have not seen any errors and slowdowns.

Im' still playing with the unit so more pros and cons will come later.

#1,049 ·
I just completed the install. It took me about 6 hours and that was with no options. I was by myself and while I am good with my hands, I'm not used to working on car electronics. I just took my time and I actually called Charles once when I wasn't sure about something. He has been great in providing support both during and after the install. I'll probably post up a more in depth review when I spend a little more time with the unit.

***** To my early adopters ******

Dear Friends,

I will be hosting, under my website, installs pictures from my early CN-M5 adopters.

All I need from you is your best and favorite pix of the system and a one sentence description of your overall impression for a product that just hit the market. Subject can vary like ,quality, performance nav comparison ,support you received or all of none of that.

Be yourself and don't be super natural.

Please send to compass-nav@videotron.ca

Thanks!

Charles

A question for those have already installed the unit:

Did anyone install this unit in a black brush trim car? Does it look OK with the glossy nav system?

Charles:

With your product just released to the market, are you still working on the temp sensor? I just want to see should I get this one or wait a little bit longer? Although I can check the weather from my phone, I do like the temp display feature, and don't want to loose it. I know compare to what I gain from this nav system, loosing the display for outside temp is nothing, but nobody like to loose something you like.

I got the brush metal finish in my car and the piano black blend perfectly with it!!! really at first I really wanted the brush metal finish but after seing how it fits I was totally satisfied!!!

#1,060 ·
But in the grand scheme of things is it not a small issue? I am sure that when (not if) the temperature sensor module is implemented it will be available as an option (or better still after install purchase). Then you can purchase and install.
Honestly, I'm looking to install this and never have to pull it out again unless I upgrade my speakers. I'm on the fence between this and unavi. Without this feature, it's going to come down to price. If I can pull my phone out to check the temp, I might as well fire tom tom up too while I'm at it you know? I'm sure everything else with the system is AMAZING though. I just need to be assured that this isn't something that's going to be forgotten about if i choose to go with this system.

Hi Charles,
First and foremost, congratulations! awesome job!!
It took me about an hour to read all 106 pages, but well worth it, I was debating between units for my '12 GLS and this seems like a preferred choice...
Anyways, what is the availability? (With back up camera)
When will the temperature indicator become available? (I cant say I care for blue link)
Finally, is solid black still a choice when placing the order?
Thank you

#1,063 ·
Thank you Gadvt,

Well appreciated!

I'm currently sold out but I will place an order for a second shipment this week.

I had few late takers but also wanted to hear from my early adopters for urgent fix.

BlueLink is already supported. As far the temp sensor, I feel some pressure to put it into works

Solid Black, you mean piano black, for sure, I have two choices, Piano black and wood finish for Tan interiors.

If you wish more info, please get in touch with me. compass-nav@videotron.ca

Thanks!
