Electronic Stability Control (ESC) on or off?

From a separate thread, I just learned about our ability to turn off ESC. So, I went into my car manual and learned more about it. Apparently, you can shut off ESC in two stages: (1) press it once and it shuts off engine stability control (whatever that means) and leaves brake control on, and (2) hold it for 3 seconds and it shuts off both engine and brake stability control. I also believe turning this off could save the brakes as well as increase MPG since you're not messing with momentum.

Our SF is actually my wife's so I haven't had a chance to test it out yet, but I'm wondering if anyone on this forum has tested the difference. When I've driven my wife's SF, I *think* I can feel the ESC sometimes kicking for normal driving like going down steep hills and having taken some corners, but maybe it's my imagination.

Thoughts on this?

Makes sense...so much for that idea. I do notice that when I'm coasting down a hill, I feel like the engine/tranny really keeps the car from coasting faster more than my other cars, which I wish wouldn't happen. I thought maybe that could be ESC, but it's probably just the gearing since I coast more freefall when in neutral.

The car doesn't know you are coasting down a hill so the auto box is programmed to have you in a gear where you will get response from the engine should you need to accelerate, if you the tranny is in overdrive and the engine rpms are down you'll not get a lot of instant power with low boost and a small displacement engine.
Have you tried the manual control mode of shifting or whatever they call it - the situation you describe may be one where it is of some use.

I figured out why the car wasn't coasting downhill like I wanted it to. ECO mode was off. If ECO mode is off, it keeps the car downshifted to provide more power (higher rpms) if needed. Since I usually drive the car like a granny, I want better coasting to stoplights, etc so I get better mpgs using the momentum of the car. If I put eco mode on, I get that reaction from the car. I can't believe I didn't think of this before.
