Do we really have to have car key remote programmed at dealership?

Hello friends, just had my key/remote lost and ordered one from eBay. I thought that we can program the remote by myself, but saw some different articles stating different points. Someone said that we have to do that at dealership because a special equipment is needed; some other said that we can follow the instructions found at eHow. Has anybody tried to program it by yourself, ever? Thanks!

Requires a trip to the dealer. Since you didn't buy the remote from them, they'll probably charge you. What galls me is when you buy a replacement remote from the dealer and they STILL charge you to program it. It should be built in to the price for a remote purchased at the dealer.

Yep, gots to pay me for knowing how to properly operate the equipment to program your remote,, I dont drive 30+ mile 1 way to work to work for free.. do you work for free ?

What galls me is when you buy a replacement remote from the dealer and they STILL charge you to program it.
Remote come from parts dept.. they sell the part.. if you want program, you go to service dept and have service dept do the program.
I'm sorry, but I do not work for free, I'm not required to under law. Part dept fella is not trained to use my special shop tools, they dont go to school for that.

Just the initial out lay for the GDS was something like $10,000 that Hyundai mandated all dealer have as service tool.. then service has to send people to school to get trained on use of the tool, and the many other functions of the GDS. Then they gave us another GDS (Economy version at $2500 as a required tool.. we have to recover our cost on this stuff.

I don't work for free and I'm not suggesting you do so either. Many businesses bundle the cost of the part and the required service so the customer pays one price to the parts dept that includes the programming charge. It's more convenient for the customer and it makes sure the customer leaves with something they can use: a remote and the programming.

That sounds like a potential security/theft issue if it was that easy to hack into that vehicle. Anyone with a FOB and know how could, at the very least, lock/unlock your vehicle without your knowledge. I, for one, am glad that the Sonata isn't so simple.

the cost of programming varies,

but our GDS hyundai scan tool, laptop on a trolley cost us $16,000
and our hand held G scan cost $6,000

but at the same time,
it can be a discretionary thing,
we have regular customers who always bring us work, an people who own a small fleets, and normally we can do a better deal for them

Wow, I cannot imagine that device costs soooooo much. :(

Even something as simple as a professional ratchet (MAC, SNAPON, MATCO) can cost $200 so it is of no surprise the "specialized tools" cost so much.

My 21 drawer toolchest with all tools would cost more than $25K if it were all brand new pro quality.

As for the key-fob, there is no DIY method for our vehicles. Supposedly on the older models <2004 there was a way but no longer.

Also keep in mind the vehicle cannot support more than 2 key fobs at a time.

how ******* typical of our ****** eyed japs to make it so that when a remote claps out they charge $500.00 dollars for programing at bathurst in new south wales at the dealers
personally im glad i own a ford at least if you get a remote that dies on you a replacement is not only cheap but can also be programed by its owner an not get ripped off by greedy dealers sorry but service with hyundai to me is nothing but a ripp off another way for the bastards to suck the life out of you when thier equipment screws up sorry but hyundai your a ripp off mob service sucks big time they charged my sister 1100 dollars for a basic general service personally i hope i can talk her into buying a ford at least they wont ripp the **** out of her wallet for simple service

Racial slurs aren't cool, but on the other hand I like to know what people are really thinking.

The problem isn't specific car manufacturers from whatever country. The problem is typical dealer pricing. I've seen sky high prices at the Ford dealer perfectly in line with Hyundai.

When the dealer is your only hope, prices go crazy, no matter how easy the job is for them.

Uncalled for, plus Hyundai is a Korean manufacturer not Japanese. Also the Sonata is built in the US. I got a new key and fob with programming for $50 at a locksmith at the DMV. He plugged in a computer, pressed a couple buttons and the new fob was programmed. Very simple. Dealer wanted about $100 just for programming.

It's not only Hyundais, there's a lot of other manufacturers with the same money grabbing status.........If they can "blue tooth" my 100X brands smart phone to my car's entertainment system, why can't they "blue tooth" my 100x brand keyfob to the entertainment system so that I can program it myself???.......AND, 20 years of OBD2 where an external hardware/software device is still needed to communicate to the vehicle's computer!!! With today's technology, it would be easily done to open a screen on your entertainment system to communicate with the on board computer. MONEY GRABBING.
