Dimension System Problems

I've found a few people having certain issues with the dimension sound system. In my 2011 Sonata Limited, I have the 6 Disc changer, not the NAV system. My issues list is as follows:

1. Bluetooth can be slow to connect
2. Bluetooth sometimes does not connect
3. Bluetooth sometimes disconnects after being connected, once during a phone call
4. "XM Loading" is sometimes very slow
5. "XM Loading" may never finish, unless I shut the car off, then restart it
6. Once, the entire system "locked up" where none of the controls worked, no sound from the speakers, and only the volume up/down control responded (although still no sound)
7. Several times, if the car is started with the sound system "off," I get blasted with "white noise" from the speakers, but the system is still off; must turn the system on then off to stop the white noise
8. Once, the system turned itself off while driving, and restarted, initially blasting me with white noise

I have an iPhone 3G, my wife has a Pantech Matrix, and my son has a Sony-Ericsson Walkman/phone. All will sync at some point with the in-car bluetooth. The Matrix, however, doesn't download the phonebook. I know the iPhone is on the compatibility list. Yes, I have disabled WiFi in the hope it improves the bluetooth performance. If bluetooth was all there was, I could continue to use my earpiece.

If anybody has experienced any of these problems, how was it resolved? My dealer has ONE guy who works on these systems, and I must wait another two weeks for an opening.

Wow -- I'm sorry to tell you, I listen to my Dimension all the time and don't believe I've experienced ANY of those. I don't use XM much so don't have much good data on that item, and my Blackberry doesn't have a huge address book, so perhaps that's why it connects quickly.

But so far so good on the Dimension.

The only software bug I've noticed is that if I am listening to my USB memory stick music in "all random" mode, then take/make a Bluetooth phone call, that when I return to music again (automatcially upon hangup), the "all random" mode is lost. Annoying, but no biggie I guess.

So I am a HUGE fan of the audio and it's one of my favorite parts of the new car. It's almost as if you need to get your firmware updated or something (???)

Re your item #5, XM Loading.
I have experienced that twice in 3 weeks. I think I will report it to the dealer as a warranty item but I am not sure they could duplicate it as its very intermittent. Since the dealer is very close I will drive in when it happens.

Like you say, shutting the car off and back on fixes it.

I had read somewhere that holding the radio power button down for more than .8 seconds results in a hard shutdown, I cannot confirm that at this time.
Next time I get the XM loading problem will give that a try.
Keep us informed of your progress.

Can't comment on the other items, no bluetooth used here.

I have had the XM Loading error several times. I think it has something to do with the iPod being plugged in when the car starts. I removed my iPod and I have not had the problem since then. I guess I can make it a point to simply remove my iPod when I turn off the car, as it's best to hide it for security reasons anyway.

I know that in the Nav radio, there is a reset button you can press to reboot the system. The owner's manual also talks about a hard off and a soft off, not sure that applies to the dimension unit, you may want to look at the manual though.

The manual has a worthless index, but will look for that.

I had not tried that. I usually get everything out and plugged in before I start up. Still, that seems like a bug.

There's another thread about that white noise startup problem.

It sounds like there might be some defective Dimension systems out there, unfortunately.

The car goes to the shop mid-month to have the system looked at. The dealer has one guy who does this work, and he moves from location to location, so his availability is scarce.

Firmware update is what I'm thinking too. I'm still enjoying the 3 month XM intro trial. Not sure I care about signing up. I really wanted HD radio, and this particular unit has it. The unit with NAV and backup camera drops 6 Disc CD and HD radio. So I had a Garmin, wanted HD...the choice was clear for me.

I had a Garmin, too, which my wife now uses.

No way I was going to pay more than $25k for a car and still have add ons suction cupped to the windshield. Plus, I wanted the upgraded stereo and couldn't care less about HD Radio. The backup camera has been very helpful.

After reading about some of these problems with the Dimension system, I'm glad I avoided it.

I have had ZERO problems with my Dimension system... Has GREAT HD sound and great base! iPhone bluetooth works like a charm, not anything I can say bad about it... Don't let one problem push you away from getting this system. Just my .02

Okay, the dealer's service people could not duplicate any of these problems. While I figured they couldn't duplicate one or two, I thought there would be enough to go on for them to find something on that list. They did check all the connections, though. I'm trying to keep track of the weather and temperature conditions at their request to see if it has a bearing on when the problems surface. Since getting the car back, I've not had XM loading issues or shutdown issues, only bluetooth and white noise problems.

I have to wonder if the bluetooth issue is related to the size of my phonebook in my iPhone. I have tons of contacts there, and a bunch I could remove. I even thought there was something under the bluetooth settings that I could use to disable the phonebook download, or restrict to favorites.

The only issue I had was this morning, the lady 's voice came on and told me, "Connection Failed." But I went to use my phone via BlueTooth and it worked anyway... Thinking perhaps it took longer than usual to sync contacts, or maybe there was a momentary loss of connection, but whatever happened, it came back immediately.

Now, I took my owner's manual out of the car so I could look it over and forgot to put it back in... I have a question about the Dimension HD radio. How do you tune HD stations? There is no HD option when scrolling through modes...

Regarding the bluetooth connection, I think that some phones are a little flaky. I have one of the original Samsung Blackjacks. It has always been unstable with out other cars. What I have discovered is that if I don't initially get a connection with the Sonata, I can dial from the phone itself, and then it will connect. Once I have established the connection that way, I can dial from the car, or answer from the car. My system is the Infinity with Nav, but I'd guess you may have the same luck with the Dimension system.

I don't know if the contacts would be an issue or not. Does your iphone stream the music OK over bluetooth? Music should be way more data intensive than contacts. Does the iphone stream to bluetooth headphones alright? I am just trying to rule out phone issues.

I figured it out, it was simple. I just had to turn the HD feature "On" in Sound Setup.

Now I need to play around with the iPod cable (and Sport Shift mode... another subject)

Not really an "issue" but more of a complaint. I love the sound of the Dimension audio and love that it interfaces with the ipod. My complaint is because I have about 70 gb of music on my ipod and its kind of a pain to scroll to the artists in the middle of the alphabet. The fact that it locks into your ipod and you have to control it via the car compounds this complaint. The easy fix is to just use a regular aux cord but I do like seeing the info appear on the screen. I guess maybe the easy fix is to just transfer some of the albums I listen to more often onto a usb thumb drive and do it that way.

If you use the iPhone and stream via Bluetooth the songs are displayed on the screen and you can use the iPhone to control the player. Not sure if the iPod Touch has BT or not. I know it has WiFi.

I may have solved my Bluetooth connection problem. On the iPhone, going to the bluetooth settings, and going into (not just selecting) "SONATA" gives you the ability to control and tweak the downloading of contacts. I know I have a large contact list, but I know that only my favorites (family members) are essential for voice dialing, so I made sure that favorites was "on," recent contacts was "off," and that under groups "none" was selected. My iPhone connects very quickly and the "transfer complete" message comes up after a minute or less. I'll keep watching for this for the next few days to make sure, but so far it's working. If it's a contact list size issue, what is the limit? If anybody feels like things are working fine, post how many entries you have in your contacts list. Maybe we can take a stab at finding a contact list size limit.

I don't usually stream music over bluetooth because I have an iPod that I connect directly. I keep a small set of music on my iPhone, but my iPod has more capacity. I have tried streaming from my iPhone just because it's supposed to work, but it breaks up a lot. I've seen info suggesting that the iPhone doesn't implement A2DP properly, or that you need to have at least 3.0 firmware. Not sure, so you should dig into this. Uncertain if this has anything to do with having WiFi enabled at the same time.

On a separate note, the "white noise blast" that I get when restarting the Sonata when the audio system is off is still an issue. I can deal with this, but still wish there was a fix for it.

Tech at my dealer opened a case for me on "while noise" issue and I also called Hyundai and was given my case number.

David, I have a question for you. Do you see a caller's name on the screen when you are receiving a call? I know that Nav screen displays but am not sure about no Nav system. I get a caller's number only, not name. I am just curious if it is a phone-related issue.

#24 ·
I too have the white noise issue which I started another thread regarding that problem, but with regard to bluetooth etc....

I have no nav. and when I first got the car I was using a Blackberry with over 2500 names. I almost never got any right and if a call came in it just showed the number with rare exception. I think it was due to some limitation on loading all the names and numbers. After that I decided it was time to clean up my address book so I archived everything and went throught and delete all but @ 650 names. I deleted the phone in the car and started over. Now it works almost 100% of the time. I have since started using an android based phone with the same 650 names and it still works great. So somewhere between 650 and 2500 there is a problem %^).

Create smart playlists. There are tricks to doing some of these so they update dynamically on play count and rating. This keeps things sane for me.

I do see the caller's name.

It's funny, the iPhone stores things "last, first" but the Sonata strips the comma. Voice dialing requires calling out the name "last first" to get it right. Incoming calls will display "last first" as well.
