Did anyone get the rustproofing package the dealers offer? It seems like a lot of money for what you get. Maybe an anuual oil spray would be the way to go. I went with nothing on my last car but I'm thinking about getting something this time around. What did everyone do? Thanks.

Skip the dealer packages; go to Krown, Rust-Check or Metropolitain. And even then only if you plan to keep your car longer than 6 or 7 years in the salt belt.

Better yet, grab a few cans of undercoating and Rust-Check from Canadian Tire and do it yourself. It's very therapeutic.

I would love to do this, but I don't have a lift or ramps. I think I will probably end up taking it to Krown or a silimar shop. This car is pretty low and would be difficult to crawl under to do this application.

Yes, you definitely need ramps to do the undercoating yourself. But the undercarriage is actually fairly well-covered by the factory. 95% of the rustproofing battle is inside the fenders, doors and rocker panels, which are easily accessible without ramps. But I won't lie... it is a messy and time-consuming DIY job.

Messy and time-consuming you say? I think it may be well worth the investment to have a shop do it professionally to avoid the hassle in that case. Thank you for your input Don!

Ever since that Seinfeld episode where Putty tried ripping off Jerry with rustproofing, I can't take it seriously. I honestly didn't know car "rustproofing" existed. If I hadn't had seen this thread, I probably would have laughed if a salesman offered it to me
I love that show! I'm also jealous of anyone who doesn't know what rust is all about. Up here the average 10-year old Honda Civic is well on its way to becoming Swiss Cheese. :57:

old thread, but I find by simply washing the car every week, just rising the car, works really well. If you make sure your cars metal isn't exposed, my 10 year old civic has no rust spots. It was spray once I think.

I really thought the "rust proofing" package was a thing of the past. I guess, one could always just take the car to a body shop as well to get an occasional undercarriage respray if they drive in heavily salted winter roads.

Do our cars come with some rustproofing/undercoating already installed?

I was looking at the bottom of my rocker panel (side skirt, side trim, etc.), and I can see a painted, or sprayed on coating. Not sure if it's for rust, fire, sound or what, but it's there. I didn't pay for it, so I don't think the dealer added it. My Elantra is from Korea btw.

I will bring mine to a local garage where they use oil with air gun. I brought all my previous cars there and they never rusted. Usually they drill holes on the side skirt (if it is called like that) but I noticed the Elantra has plugs underneath them. I will remove them all and ask the guy to shoot in them :) if you do it yourself, you won't be able to reach everywhere like a air gun would.

hi,

maybe it's a bit late if you got the car now, but when i was buying mine 2010 touring ,it was part of my deal,

I wanted:

- winter tires ~$500
- rustproofing ~$600
- tints ~ $300
- side molding ~$250
- deflector ~$100
- mud guards ~$100

Wife only needed A/c so we picked the gl/5 speed. blue indigo metalic.
So after few "lets leave" and dealer cost offers ...

we only had to pay for the side molding ??? thats what they said. $ 282.53
car price: $18,382Cnd +tax. ($345/60m@0.000%)

few goodees for free why not!
