Custom Led Running Lights

Hey all,

I just had an idea..

What if I were to get LED strip lights and attach them to my car as running lights, controlled by a switch inside the car?

On the front, I would go with (2) 6" strips of White. There's 1 LED per inch of length.

Check them out:

http://www.v-leds.com/Shop/Control/Product...sid/0/SFV/32481

And they are, of course, completely sealed and moisture-proof. And since they're from V-LEDs, they're very high quality.

Now my only dilemma is "Where should I place them?". They attach with 3M adhesive.
I want the light to be clearly visible, but I really don't want to mount them on the very front of the bumper in plain sight for 2 reasons:
1) Someone WILL inevitably tear them off my car to steal them.
2) Someone WILL tap the front of my car while parallel parking and smash them.

I was thinking maybe just in front of the grill, the recessed area. But then, maybe I should just get (1) 12" or 24" strip. Give me your thoughts, feedback, etc. If you think it's stupid, say it. If you think it's awesome, say that. I'm open to ideas. But for $10, it almost seems like an interesting project.

I'm definitely gonna do it. Is there a way to set it up so that I can manually turn it on/off when I want to, but to ALSO have it work as turn signals (get brighter and dimmer)?
If not, that's okay. I'll just have a switch to turn them on/off and skip the turn signal aspect.

I guess the important part of what I'm getting at is: I want to be able to have them on without my parking lights or headlights on. But it'd also be cool if they could also function as turn signals.

I might just stick with the running light function since that's the least complicated, and that would allow me to have them on without any other lights on.

yes it can be done.
i'll be back with a possibly diagram.

something simple but you can get the idea.
missing power from battery and grounds

yes i forgot ground, the 12v comes from the cig lighter fuse, no need to connect it directly battery since we need the switch. and ground it on the engine bay.

What's the dimmer for?
the dimmer is there because u ask for it.

maybe i read wrong, but if u want it work as turn signal just split ur turn signal cable.

I think I'm gonna go with using them as running lights only. I can't figure out a way to have them be independent of the parking lights/front turn signals, but still be able to flash with the turn signals. Plus, they're so low on the car, it's unlikely anyone would confuse them for turn signals, unless they're just dumb.

rondy, adding a resistor will only dimme your light.
the resistor is needed only to protect your led, so they don't blow with straight 12V.

is needed to control your current, if you know the specs of the LEDs just run them anything below the max rating.

you can use pwm to make the "dim" effect too

I get the feeling most everyone is missing my point entirely lol.. I'll just do the mod in a week or so, and post pictures to show you all what it looks like and how I did it.
tell me if I got your point

when you said brighter and dimmer, did you mean something like parking lights + turn signal bulb??, as you know the turn signal is brighter than the parking light.

do you want them wired to the turn signal and have them at full brightness only when the turn signal is on, and a little bit dimmer when acting as running lights (kinda parking lights) with a switch to turn them on and off and not directly wired to the parking lights.

I think you pretty much hit it on the head, but I think what I'm aiming more for would be like the GM-style running lights, where they're on full-bright normally, and then they turn off/flash full-bright for the turn signal. So basically, I don't want there to ever be a "dim" setting. I just want them to be on full-bright and then flash on and off. It seems like a lot to ask for lol. I think I need to think out the logistics of this project before I buy them.

I know is possible but you would have to do some research lol. Using transistors I guess.

An easy way to do something like that, but its not how you want them, is to wire them to your running lights switch and your turn signals, but you will see the turn signal only when the running lights are off. you will need to wire a rectifier 1n4004 diode to protect the circuit.

I wonder if you could somehow adapt a kit such as this for this purpose? (You'll want to scroll on the left side down to daytime running lights, then look for the universal kit.)

You won't be connecting it exactly like the instructions show -- i'm thinking you could tap into the turn signal wiring and run it into the drl unit, then out to your led's. That's the closest thing I can come up with for a workaround if you want turn signals.  Aside from that you could try this but it's going to end up making your LED's flash opposite of the turn signal bulbs.  I don't know if such a configuration would work with LED's though...

Or just see if you can fit two strips in that spot, one for turn and one for drl.

interesting.

Now THAT'S a cool idea. The height of the space I'm referring to if about .5 inches tall, so it would have to be (2) 6" strips (cut down to 4" each) on each side though, at least if I were gonna stick with having them pointing forward, which seems kinda pointlessly small. Otherwise, I could have them be flat on that surface, pointing up, and then they could be as long as I want. I'm not sure how visible they would be if I had them pointing upward though. Keep in mind they're extremely low to the ground. I dunno. What do you all think?

This thread is like a giant brainstorming session.

Ok....I didn't read the whole thread so tell me to keep quiet if I'm wrong.....you said you want the running lights to be on and then blink with the blinker....that can be done using a simple relay I would think.....a relay that is normally on and then hook it up to the hot from the blinker relay.....when the tail light blinker is on then the running light relay is off.......that would be strange...they would be alternating blinking....why not just hook them up to the tail lights ? Ok...I'm going back to read the whole thread.... :whistling:

Ok...I see what you want....my way would get you blinking but the running lights would be off when your blinker is on and on when your blinker is off....hummm....ok....we need to build a logic circuit......with some nand gates and some or gates.....I'll get back to you.....

a relay of course, great

I know a couple of you have done some interior (under-seat, etc) LED lighting, so I'm proposing a similar question.

How do you tap power from the 12v Cigarette lighter?
I want to use something those little wire splicing crimpy things, similar to these http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.js...rentPage=search
How do I access the wires for the Cigarette lighter?

I think that would be the ideal place to tap power from for my front and rear LED running lights, since the cigarette lighter is ONLY powered when the car is running :) And it's very doubtful the LEDs would even draw 1 Amp total.

Do I have to take apart the dash or what?
