Cup holders

Lack of cup holders in the 2nd row is one of the few things I don't like about my SF. The in door wells are barely useable, and cannot accommodate most size drinks.

Anyone come across any good after market cup holder solutions?

I have the very same complaint about the Santa Fe LWB and to be truthful, I am thinking about returning it (I have 3 days/150 miles for return at my AutoNation dealer) for this reason. It is a small thing, but Hyundai engineers should have solved this issue.

I defy them to place a cup with a plastic lid in the holder in the door at a steep angle without it spilling.

Hopefully someone will come up with a solution.

Yikes. I wouldn't return it over the cup holders. I have never owned a vehicle that didn't have some deficiency, or didn't lack something that I would have preferred to have.

My last 2 vehicles were Buick Enclaves. Although they did have cup holders built into the armrests on the 2nd row doors, they were essentially useless. They were too small, and the door had a bulge to it that limited the height of what you could put in the cup holder. Marginally (and I mean marginally) better than the cup holders in the door wells of the SF.

Wow, I must be getting old. Back in the day many cars and vans didn't have cup holders, but they sold plastic cup holders that had a U bracket that fit over the armrest and had a hanging cradle for your drink. Surely, someone still makes them or you can find some used somewhere.

Update:
Here you go, something like these

When my wife found out the Limited only had seating for 6, she was torn. She was really wanting a sunroof. But when she found out there were no non-bottle-only cupholders in the second row, that sealed it for her, and we bought the GLS.

I have seen other vehicles have cupholders in the back of the console, and I have seen cupholders that open up on the inboard side of the seat. I am puzzled as to why Hyundai didn't explore either of these options.

I wonder if something like this: Amazon.com: Rampage 39923 Universal Padded Mini Van Storage Console: Automotive
or this: TSI Products 54215 Clutter Catcher Grey OEM Look Minivan Console : Amazon.com : Automotive
would be useful?

Both of these options are designed to fit between the driver seat and passenger seat in the front row. Not sure how you would anchor them between the captain's chairs in the 2nd row. If they were heavy and secure and wouldn't move around, could be a possible solution.

Just wondering if anyone has tried any of the consoles - there are tons of them out there. If so and you like it/it works well, can you post the brand and model? I've mentioned to the dealer several times that they're missing a revenue opportunity by not offering custom fit consoles matched to the interior. Originally, I wasn't wild about the captains chairs but the one thing that I really like about the vehicle is how spacious and open it feels on the inside. Don't have a regular need for the 3rd row but on those occasions when it is used, the poor folks stuck in the back have somewhere to stick their feet if need be.

I've also seen a cup holder that hooks onto the posts of the front headrest. I like the idea of that as it's out of the way. Unfortunately, I've looked at so many options that I lost where I found that one.

If anyone has anything that they've tried, it fits and doesn't spill drinks all over - please share. My kids are both teenagers and I'm convinced they think they're going to cross the Sahara everytime they set foot in a vehicle.

I know this is an old thread and has been brought back to life and I don't have your model SF, but I know this isn't the worst car I have seen concerning cup holders. My 2001 Audi A6 Avant that I had only had 1 cupholder up front and it was located above the radio on the dash. It could only support small cups and nothing more. It was a PITA!

There is hope. I went to see the 2014 Toyota Highlander today--the vehicle I originally wanted when I purchased my Santa Fe Limited.

The model with the second row captain's chairs actually had a collapsible cup holder attached to the inside portion of one of the chairs. I am hoping that when parts become available for that model I might be able to modify that part to fit the Santa Fe.

Wish me luck. I looked for a picture but could not find one on the internet yet. After searching I did find this video. Look at the 2:30-2:58 time stamp.

Here it is, this is simple and why Hyundai didn't "copy" it for 2014 I'll never know. . . . .

Wanted to bump this "old-ish" thread to give you all some info.

I too have been bothered by the lack of decent cupholders in the second row of our Santa Fe. Other than that we have absolutely loved this vehicle. Well, after reviewing this thread, I decided to stop by Wal Mart and pick up a storage container. Cost me about $30.

Excuse the mess, but as you can see, it fits just fine. I have not had a chance to use it yet, but my son test sat in the booster and he can reach the cupholder easily. It has plenty of storage for wipes and kleenex. It is very light and can slide with little effort, however, I do not anticipate it moving while the car is in motion. If it does, that problem can be solved with some velcro strips front and back. It came with screws, but I am not drilling into the floor of my brand new vehicle.

Hope this helps anyone looking for something. Feel free to ask questions, I will update this post as we use it more.

BTW, I specifically joined this forum to post this. :D

2014 Limited, captain chairs here. The captain chairs are the most comfortable rear seats I have ever had! Love them. Rear seat cup holders in the doors? Awful design. Make fun if you must, but we take road trips with two kids frequently, and the door holders suck if you have anything but a water bottle. The third row cup holders are excellent (like a minivan design). I sent a message to the only person on this thread who actually tried something in their limited to ask how it worked out. Will report back if they respond...might have to go to wal mart and see what they have.

^ I replied. :)

I don't visit this forum that often, so you caught me on the right day.

To give an update as promised, the cupholder solution I have above is still working out great. We just recently took a trip to NY (about a 5 hour drive) and it got plenty of use from my son.

It will slide forward under hard braking, but it is an easy fix that I have just been too lazy to do. Besides, how often are we slamming on the brakes? :D

Only complaint has been from my 10 year old niece who always sits in the back. With the cupholder/storage bin, it makes it hard for her to get to the back seats. That VERY minor complaint is solved by her just crawling in through the trunk, haha.

mixwrx - My local Wal Mart and Target no longer stock large'ish console cup holders. They used to. I guess Amazon is hurting their business. So from Amazon I think I found the exact same console as Mix, except mine is all black. It fits just about perfectly and does not seem to want to slide much. Large covered (lockable) storage as well.

For trips with 6 people I would probably pop it out and leave it in the garage.

But for road trips with 4 people this is going to be nice.
It is called the "TSI Products 54211 Clutter Catcher Black OEM Look Minivan Console". Two pics:

We use this:

Amazon.com: Wagan EL2296 10.5 Liter Personal Fridge and Warmer: Automotive

It works great as a cup holder and storage bin for my son's backseat junk. As a bonus, you can use it to keep drinks cold while you are on long trips. Has proven useful several times.

I used 2 stainless l-brackets and just screwed it to the floor with short self-drilling screws. Doesn't move and looks pretty good.

luck11,

Agreed. I considered buying and mounting 1 to the back of the console until I noticed that it does slope and is not flat. I think it would have to be mounted to the floor right in front of the console? I also considered mounting one on each of the back door door panels but that surface is not completely flat either and thought it might look cheesy? With all your mods you have done you are obviously pretty handy so I think you should work on a cup holder solution for the rest of us and then we can all copy it. LOL.

My concern about the floor is it is rather low, but on the other hand, perhaps better than nothing. Agree that mounting on the door would not be an ideal solution. Wonder if a folding cup holder could be attached to the side of the buckets that when folded, don't restrict access to the 3rd row. Who knows, when I find some time and the right product, I just may try to MacGyver something. :grin2:

Thank you for the post. That is odd, because even in the purchase of my home and car purchase I was told at both instances that I legally have a 3 day cancellation option(i believe). The durango purchase was probably close to 8 -10 years ago so maybe there was a law and it changed? Carmax was not pleased and I believe if there was no law they would not have honored my request.

Per CarMax site: 23. Can I return my used car?
For peace of mind, we offer a 5-Day Money-Back Guarantee* on every used car we sell. Simply bring back the car in the same condition in which it was purchased. You'll get a full refund, with no hassles. And with no pressure to buy another car.

*See store for written details

I am a 5-TIME CarMax customer and they stand by what they say. I would never buy a car anywhere else. They have a great no-pressure sales team, 30-days from date of purchase they fix anything you find wrong, and yes - you can return it, hassle free (but within I think 5-days and less than 300-500 miles).

My last purchase, they assured me every car had a spare tire. The Elantra doesn't come standard with a spare. So to keep their word, they sent someone to Hyundai, bought me a spare tire kit, a jack kit, installed it - AND, for my inconvenience, paid my $160 hotel bill and toll money. I challenge anyone here to get that kind of service from Hyundai.
