Clip That Holds Fuel Cap To Fuel Door Broken

I went to pump gas today in my 2008 SF and when I took the fuel cap off, it was not attached to the fuel door! I looked and found that the plastic clip that holds the cap to the fuel door was broken. I looked on the ground for the broken piece but never found it. Since I was only a few miles from the dealer, I drove there to order a new one.
I showed the service guy that was working there and he said that only the service manager could authorize this repair. He works M-F. He said it's a big job. The fuel doors dont come painted so the paint would have to be matched. Part of the back panel would have to be removed and it would be about a $400 job to do. I told him you've got to be kidding! It's a plastic fuel door and it looks like there are two bolts holding it on? I said, I will be back on Monday to talk to the service manager.
I will let everyone know how I make out with the service manager and if he gives me any grief. I wanted to post this in case someone else has had this same issue. I am not sure the reason why they make the fuel door out of cheap plastic?

Wow, $400. That is insane.

When you say the "clip" broke, I assume you're talking about the molded plastic on the inside of the fuel door. (There is no clip, just a hole drilled through the plastic.) My suggestion is to simply jam the end of the "cord" which attaches to the gas cap into the horizontal slats next to the hinge, along with a little contact cement. Problem solved. Option 2 is to simply forget about attaching the gas cap to the fuel door... there's a molded cubby inside the door that can hold the gas cap while you fill up.

PS: Looking at my Santa Fe I can't understand why it's such a big job. The fuel door appears to be held on with two easy-access bolts.

I don't understand why they'd be making such a big deal out of it... the fuel door is around $45, and painting it can't be that much. Labor would be half an hour, tops.

Sounds more like a service writer that has NO idea what they're talking about. That would not surprise me.

Agreed!

I will find out the real story tomorrow.

I just found out my wife fueled up a few days prior and it was the day after a storm. She said the fuel door was stuck alittle and the gas attendant opened it and pumped the gas. I dont know how he did it but I blame him now for breaking it.

I pumped gas last week and the fuel door snapped right off my 2009 Santa Fe. It is cheap plastic. I have ordered a new one from the dealer for $49 and also have to pay $55 for them to paint it to match. Then I'll have to pay them to install it, which i'm told will be less than $50. A lot of hassle and expense for this little part! I just looked now and see there are chrome covers you can get, probably would have been cheaper than painting! oh well.
Anyone else had this problem?
