CarPlay Lag

Whenever I'm in a longer drive (>30 min) CarPlay has a HUGE lag. Approximately 20 or 30 seconds HUGE. So I touch the screen then 20 seconds later it registers my touch. I'm not sure if it matters but I'm always using Waze so I notice it while Waze is active. But it it the entirety of the CarPlay controls. I tried to switch to a podcast and the delay was terrible.

Oddly enough it seems to happen more when I'm not actively using the controls. So if I'm constantly touching the screen, the lag isn't there. It's only when I don't touch the screen for a while that I get the lag. Then it sort of clears up after a couple minutes of trying to find the right screen.

Does anyone else have a similar issue? Anyone have luck getting it fixed?

I'll throw out the usual- Has the Navigation in the car been updated? Is your IOS version the latest? All Apps updated? Phone restarted? Uninstall/unpair phone from car (bluetooth and carplay) then reinstall/repair. Try different lightning cable. Try to borrow someone else's phone and see if it is still an issue. I'd like to think one of these is your issue. If your using a wireless dongle, I'd suspect that.

I’ve had the exact same issues for years with Waze and Google maps, only those 2 apps in specific. I switch back to them every few months when apps have been updated, but the issue always comes back. Apple Maps, Spotify, etc… all work as expected, so I make do with Apple Maps for navigation.

Give it a try.

You have no signature, nor indicate what model year / trim level you have (helps verify whether you have wired or wireless CarPlay).

With the latest sw update, iOS 16.3.1, and wired connection in our '22 Hybrid Limited, no issues with lag for CarPlay. Primarily use either Waze or Apple Maps for navigation and Tidal for media. In general, no complaints re: CarPlay performance.

Car Play is useless for navigation without any fix for lag. The reason is that it is not fixable. The chip they have used is extremely under powered. It just can not keep up with computing requirements. Even when you switch modes like hitting radio button, takes forever it to switch to Radio display before you can switch band.
But hey this is cheap car, do not expect all the bells & whistles to work.
I wish the stock Nav was usable, but like any other car you can not expect it to be usable if you are used to Google Maps or Waze. If you are coming from aftermarket GPS system (thing of the past), it's a huge upgrade for sure.

I’m experiencing this issue in my brand new 2023 Santa Fe Hybrid. It’s infuriating to spend this kind of money and have this issue. Hyundai hasn’t been able to resolve.
Maybe it will make you feel better that cars that are much more expensive than the SF have worse nav systems and worse lag..... Jaguars are notorious for this kind of issue.

In most case I really think it is the phone that will cause the lag and the not the information system in your car. Since everything most come from the phone to be displayed on the information system.

I know my wife was complaining about her issue of the information system not displaying the maps and phone interface. I said my I-phone works great with her car, needless to say she wasn't happy with that. And she wanted to take the car in for service on the information system.

I explained that it is her phone that was the problem and not the car. So, I did some research on Apple I-phones and found out that the car play slide button must be truned on. This usually will turn on by itself but sometimes not.

Under the Bluetooth setting where the car name is displayed it will stay connected od disconnected but the is a symbol next to it a blue circle and a i in it. Click that and you will see more information listed. The CarPlay button needs to be turned on also Device Type needs to be set.
This seems to solve her issue.

I am just saying there are so many tweaks to the phone to make it sync correctly that need to be set. It may be that one of yours is not set right.

We've been having this same issue in our 2021 Palisade Unlimited. It was ok when we first got it, but the past year and a half it's really bad. Its not a phone issue because carplay works just fine in my jeep gladaitor. I took it to the dealership and they acted like I was crazy and they'd never heard of this issue. It makes it unusable though when the map is a minute behind.
