Car lowered = no insurance apparently.

What a joke. I am getting new insurance and because my car is lowered like 1.2 inches with springs only, they won't insure it. WTH??? I don't get it. Dude tells me I voided my auto waranty and I said no way. I only void some suspension waranty. I immediately call dealer and Hyundai Canada and they both say that it just voids some suspension parts.
This company is about to lose $4000 a year of insurance coverage for my cars and house because my car is lowered. Not happy.

OH GOD REALLY CUDZ?? :C

I plan on switching to TD Auto Insurance in August. State Farm is getting rather expensive :C

What did you go for? And how did they know your car is lowered???

That sux bro!! insurance is getting more strict now a days.. I remember when I tired getting my jdm Silvia insured it took 20+ cAlls to diff insurance company's and when I found one I got dropped that same month cuz of the whole "righht hand drive" BS..good luck man.. Ps u don't have to mention ur car is lowered.. Unless u wanna insure ur springs lol

Since we are on this topic...can we...tell them we modded our head lamps and tail lights? lol Or wil they be like "LOL SORRY, CANT INSURE YOU LULULLUULLU"

The question they asked me was very specific. It was "Is your car in any way modified?"
I replied, "What do you mean by modified?"
Her reply, "Is it lowered?"
I reply "yes, springs only, about 1.2 inches"
Her reply "I will have to talk to the adjuster (or whatever the person in charge is called)"

Her next question was whether or not I had any audio, video, or navigation modifications to the car.

I have never been asked this before when buying insurance. Her first question when i asked what modified meant was whether or not it was lowered.
Problem with saying no is that in the case of an accident if they did an inspection (I know not likely) and they found I had lowering springs, they could decline a claim.

Update

Insurance wants me to fax a letter from the dealer that states the overall waranty of my car still exists and that only some parts in my suspension are no longer covered.

Ugh that's so weird. What company you going for??

As Im a new owner of a vehicle and it's my first time for insurance, when I change to another company, there's always "Your car modified" question. Do I answer yes...or no?? Im scared to answer yes because premium would go up, but also afraid to say no, incase of any accidents they blame that specific mod :C

Advice? hope I aint hijacking your topic Cudz lul

Curious if you've tried another company? A different insurance company may not ask. I had one insurance company (for homeowners) freaking out because I had a 70 pound dog, just a friendly mutt. Next company I called didn't care about my pet. Cheers.

I found this out the hard way also. I took a vehicle to my insurance office so they could take pix for $20k of additional coverage on a vehicle. They happily raised my rates immediately but then mailed me a cancellation letter because of it being bagged.

Insurance companies factor in crash test results among other things when figuring out rates to charge. Certain kinds of mods might affect handling so test results for unmodded cars no longer apply. That's my theory.

#21 ·
Just hearing what you are going though is pissing me off lol. And you have to pay 4000 buck to insure that car WTF... Yo you need to go somewhere else I pay 1200 for my car WOW. Just tell them to kiss your a** h***. Sorry im in a bad mood lol

Wait until the insurance companies find out about the Cold Air Intakes.

You'll never convince them it's not for racing. If they find out you have one, they'll either jack your rates way up,or drop you,and if you're in a accident, and they find it,they won't pay the claim, they'll drop you, give you your pro rated premiums back, and tell you to sue them.

How much time and money have you got for that !

You modify your car in ANY way and you're taking a chance.

Well, by Godfrey, I modded mine! Let the insurance company try and jack my premiums up! I'll fight them to the US Supreme Court; my rights to put LEDs in the license plate sockets are inalienable! They'll have to pry my cold dead fingers from the lamp lenses before I will ever voluntarily give them up! LMAO

Makes you wanna run right out and file a false claim, huh?

Insurance :( Im paying close to 5k for my Elantra...New driver FTL

#26 ·
Seriously? $5,000? A year? $400 a month, for insurance on a car? Absurd!

I think I'd go find me a 20-year old clunker to drive and carry liability, only.

$5,000?...highway robbery!

#28 ·
LOL....I know, the insurance is absurd :(

I asked them if it would lower if I got some old beater...made no difference. It's because I'm a new driver and insurance is under my own name. Not under my parents as they dont live in the country :C After this August, Ive officially driven on my own policy for a year, so hopefully it will drop!

@Cudz: I still want to be young lol

I meant no offense kind sir :C

Actually 5000 sounds about right for a new driver. With no previous insurance policy. I was getting.quotes around 3700 and 3600 and I have 3 years as an occasional driver on my parents sonata.

Cav I found RBC to give fairly low quotes they quoted me 3100 but in the end I got a better price through another company because my dad is with them.

#40 ·
LOL...RBC quoted me 9.3K a year. So far TD is quoting me 378/month. Gonna switch to them in August if all goes well. Right now Im with State Farm

@eric: It is based on solely on new driver. They said it wouldnt matter if I got a 88 Corolla or a 2011 Impreza! LAME, especially Ontario, we pay the highest premiums :C

I've also only been asked if I have any modifications exceeding a certain value (Can't remember what the amount was).

If a company dealt with me that way over a set of lowering springs, I'd be calling around for quotes elsewhere. It scares me that this is the kind of customer service they offer when trying to buy (already ridiculously priced) insurance from them. What would it be like trying to submit a claim with such a company?

Being a young male with a lowered car does not necessarily make one a more dangerous driver. But it does put you in a class of people who collectively have more accident claims, and probably more claims for theft and vandalism as well. Is it fair to you personally? Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. Sometimes life isn't fair.

I'm with OkieRich. Buy a clunker and insure it for the absolute minimum. Rationalizing $5,000 per year to insure a new economy car, when other options exist, makes about as much financial sense as a drug habit.

If they ever asked me a question like that, I would lie my ass off! What are you gaining by telling the truth to a company who's not even straight forward with you? It's a stupid question, therefore it deserves a stupid answer. Again, If I'm asked "Is the vehicle modified in anyway?" My reply would be, "Ma'am...I'm married with kids and I drive a Hyundai family sedan, I have no time to modify my car"....(in my head) but the guys at the body shop do! lmao. ;)

Yeah but your gas prices and much higher income taxes make it an expensive place to live anyway. Or so friends tell me. Cheap beer and wine also quebec good feature.

Ontario guys check out Bellair Direct, my son has used them for several years.
ING owns them and the rates are much lower than the numbers you guys are using. My 18 daughter new driver final G would be around $1700 for public liability only on a 2006 Elantra. Drive a beater until rates get normal as OP's stated is good advice!!

Canadian Insurance Natzi's record all telephone conversations and tell you that up front. Lie to them and you get to pay premiums that will possibly be refunded and a claim denied if an accident occurs.
Only a handful of companies in operation here and they are thick as thieves. Another business trying to suck the fun out of car ownership and driving.

You guys need some more competition amounts the insurance carriers. Probably wouldn't do any good, however, if they're all in bed with each other.

Too bad you guys couldn't start an insurance co-op up there. Put some pressure on the big boys.

Oh, to h@ll with it, just move down here and we'll welcome you with cheap rates, hot babes, and cold beer!

PS: and handsome studs for you ladies...

Learning to ignore him AND the others, as well. (I'm assuming by "leader" you mean those idiots in Washington?) I'm a bit off topic, LOL.
