Can the Smart Cruise Control be configured to not use the radar function?

I'm tired of the Smart Cruise Control on my 2023 Tucson hitting the brakes harshly when I approach another vehicle from the rear. Is there a way to configure the cruise control to function the way older systems did, without the radar/braking interconnect?

On the previous generation you could deactivate the 'smart' part of the cruise control and use it exactly as the old school cruise control. Not sure about these newer models though. On the older you would turn the CC on then keep down 3 seconds the small button with a car and 3 lines pictogram. Hopefully it works the same on your newer models, it would be dumb for H not to offer this choice. Personally I never use the 'smart' part of it

Advanced cruise control in mandated in Europe and was going to be in the U.S., I don't know if it is or not here. I'm betting because of that Hyundai did away with the lesser version. Independent testing over 2 years found a "dramatic" drop in accidents when using adaptive cruise control, and in local traffic if adaptive cruise was used a decrease in rear end accidents.

If it is braking too abruptly as posted above increase the distance it worked for me, I do agree every once in awhile it does brake more abruptly. For me it's big advancement, really is less fatiguing on a trip or in traffic.

Intelligent speed assistance (ISA) set to become mandatory across Europe | European Road Safety Charter (europa.eu)

ISA is not the same as Smart CC to my understanding. It's simply a way to make sure cars are not over speeding - the system would at most actuate the gas pedal to slow the car. I quit using the Smart CC after my car would not slow down while taking a highway exit. Basically there are situations when these systems create a clear safety danger. Yes, the manual says to always pay attention, but this is exactly what these systems do: reduce attention.

From what I am reading this is an implantation that meets some of the ISA.
"The ISA system—already fitted to vehicles from many brands in Europe—has been widely called a speed-limiting device, but it does not limit maximum speed; ISA is designed to work much like cruise control to prevent the vehicle from traveling in excess of the posted speed limit, but the driver can elect to temporarily override the speed-limiting function."
"Even in the case of speed control function, where the car speed will be automatically gently reduced, the system can be smoothly overridden by the driver by pressing the accelerator pedal a little bit deeper."

To me it seems to meet that portion.

If you were approaching slow traffic with regular cruise, you would have to hit the brakes and then reset your cruise anyway. All you have to do is change lanes to the faster traffic or lower your maximum cruise speed as you approach slower traffic. I believe that once you get used to the system you will see it is far superior to the old fashioned cruise control.

You should be getting a warning before your automatic emergency braking actually stops the car whic as stated above is totally separate from the cruise control system. The button on your steering wheel with the 3 lines under the car controls the smart cruise control following distance. If you turn on the cruise control upper button this should not engage smart cruise control. The bottom button turns that on. There are many good feature videos that Hyundai puts out on the owners site on most of these features and many more are on You tube. I suggest new owners take a minute and learn all the great features and tech included in their Hyundais.

Recently my local Hyundai TECH advised, after researching the question with Hyundai manufacturing technicians, that my 2022 Kona Limited (driver option) to bypass the 'smart' cruise, and use normal cruise (has been eliminated Hyundai engineering)! All other vehicles I have owned, (and presently own), allow for the driver choice to use 'normal' non-radar controlled cruise. For the time being, I'm stuck with this vehicle........but I will get rid of it ASAP, and will never purchase another Hyundai/Kia vehicle. Government overreach is becoming outrageous.

Would any of the fans of non smart cruise control please explain to me why they think it is better than smart cruise? What are the advantages? Personally, I never used cruise control much, but with the smart cruise I use it all the time, especially in stop and go traffic. There is a small learning curve, but overall it is a major improvement to the old system imho.

My 2021 Sonata N Line has smart cruise control which can be switched to conventional cruise control:

To Convert to Cruise Control Mode The driver may choose to only use the conventional Cruise Control mode (speed control function) by doing as follows:
1. Turn Smart Cruise Control system on (the cruise indicator light will be on but the system will not be activated). 2. Push and hold the Vehicle-to-Vehicle Distance button for more than 2 seconds.
3. Choose between “Smart Cruise Control” and “Cruise Control”. When the system is canceled using the CRUISE/ button or the CRUISE button is used after the engine is turned on, the Smart Cruise Control mode will turn on.

WARNING When using the Cruise Control mode, you must manually adjust the distance to other vehicles by depressing the brake pedal. The system does not automatically adjust the distance to vehicles in front of you

A 2021 Sonata. A 2022+ Tucson does not, manual does not mention it and no one to date has found a way to do it. And I think not on the 2022+ Sonata.

I agree. My SCC is a pain. Changing to normal CC requires pressing buttons for 3 seconds and is a distraction. There should be a single one press button for standard CC.

I'm driving down the 2 lane highway. Cruise control is set. Up ahead (way ahead), a car is slowing to make a right hand turn off the highway. Behind me is a tailgater in a big truck. I can see that I don't have to do anything in this situation. The car ahead of me, though slowing hard to make the turn, will be well out of my way before I'm on him. Suddenly, I'm braking hard without any input or direction from me. Mr. tailgater almost hits me from the sudden and completely unnecessary braking. Mr. tailgater is startled and furious. He thinks I deliberately brake checked him. I'm startled and furious. One more nanny malfunctioning "driving aid" to endanger me.

The brake lights absolutely do come on when the car brakes from adaptive cruise.

Either reduce your follow distance on the adaptive cruise or anticipate situations where it could be confusing to the adaptive cruise so you can disengage and then resume.

Not my first vehicle with adaptive cruise so I anticipate when it may be a good idea to disengage it before it's causing a problem. It's not perfect but I find it's very good still.

Precisely.

I use scc 95% of drive time, maybe I'm the only one who has figured out how to use it safely.. I can take control of unnecessary stopping by using the gas pedal when the person in front of me turns whether he uses blinker or not.

There are also setting to change reactions the vehicle makes, it can react sooner normal or later, there is a button to resume when you have to actually use the brake pedal because you are paying attention,

If you are not smart enough to figure this feature out please don't use it.

If you have a hybrid this feature actually benifits for fuel economy by driving in ev mode more, if you don't have a hybrid it still helps for better fuel economy.

My 2023 Tucson Limited is drive-by-wire, so once the SCC has engaged and it starts braking due to a vehicle in front of me, I can press the accelerator all I want and it will ignore my inputs and continue to brake.

I have a 2019 Ionic hybrid.

I agree, I love the cruise control. If you set your speed to less than the speed limit, it is less likely you will encounter braking. If you want to go around by passing, use the turn signal and depress the gas pedal,.

The lane control feature is fantastic. The car drives itself, and periodically remiinds me to put my hands back on the wheel. Always use the turn signal when changing lanes, which most states require you to do anyway.

Most of the complainers in this thread likely set the control at more than the speed limit, and probably have never read the instructions on how to set a minimum distance.
