Broken Door Handle

Hi All,

Well my passenger side rear door handle just came off today! it is all plastic and the rear inside part just sheared off. there is no damage to the door so i don't know why this happened.

Additionally, that door is seldom opened. the driver side door must be opened 30X for everytime that rear door was ever opened!
I own a 2010 Sonata I4 and will take it to the dealer, to see if it is covered under the warranty.

I searched and found a post where someone said that the handle might have been over torqued when installed at the factory which could cause a stress crack in the plastic?
If this is true, then i would expect a TSB would be out there... anyone know of one?

Any one else have any door handle problems?

TIA. :liebe011:

This should be a covered part and repair under the 5/60 warranty provisions. I would show up at the dealership with a smile and a positive spin on how it just broke off in your hand. You should be well taken care of. The part will require paint if it isn't all chrome, and is part of the warranty also.
I had two broken handles on my well used '01. They both broke during the warranty period, and have held up since.

Same Problem - different result

I had the same thing happen only it was the rear drivers door. I went to open it and the handle came off in my hand. I took it to the dealer and the service tech said that it was not covered because it was breakage. I asked how I could break something that was inside the door and he just walked away. I followed him into the service desk and asked again and he said that it just was not covered.

Is there someone at the dealer I should talk to to resolve this? The car is a 2010 Hyundai Sonata and has about 27,000 miles on it.

I used to be a major fan of Hyundai as I own a 2004 Sonata also but if this is how they treat owners of new cars then it might be time for a change.

Yeah, change of dealership. You probably could move on up the chain of command and see if you can find someone to talk to that doesn't have their head up their ass. Otherwise find yourself another dealership. I mean what good is a warranty if breakage is not covered. That's what a warranty covers, parts that break. Unbelievable!!!!

In the last year 3 door handles have snapped off my 2010 sonata.
the first two were covered by warranty but the latest one happened at 64000 just over the warranty period.
The only handle that has not broken off is the drivers door, the one that gets the most use! Dealer wants $200 to replace. Any suggestions?

I had a hairline crack underneath the driver's handle. I watched the tech replace it. Pull off the half-dollar sized black cap just to the upper left of the door latch. It's in alignment with the door handle. (See pic)

With a 10mm socket and extension, remover the bolt and slide the handle back and out. Replace with the new one. Caution: use care not to drop that 10mm bolt down into the cavity of the door.

I've never had any issues on my personal vehicle but I see this a lot on Fords (specifically Focus). You need to make sure you lubricate the latch on your door. From my experience the mechanism in the latch becomes stiff as the lubrication wears out, which means you have to pull harder on the handle to get the doors to open. That ends up putting more stress on all the components between the handle and latch. Keep things well lubricated and you should avoid most problems.

Buy a spray can of white lithium grease and hit all your door latches as well as hinges (trunk and hood hinges too if you feel like going above and beyond) and lubricate those points every oil change. No more creaky doors and no more stiff handles, and hopefully no more broken handles.

Most broken handles I've seen are usually because ****** materials are involved in the construction of said parts. Nothing you can do about that, but plenty of lube will give those parts the best chance of surviving.

2010 Hyundai Sonata broken door handles

I purchased a 2010 Hyundai Sonata in Sussex. First my rear driver side door handle came off in my hands.... I didn't use that door much and figured I would have it fixed at my next oil change. Well the driver side door handle did the same thing! I went to the dealership and they want me to pay to have them painted black and installed, about $57 a door... REALLY??? $114.00 for two plastic ****** door handles?? I don't think so... I'll be calling a higher up at the dealership, If I have to pay for this I will NEVER buy or recommend another Hyundai. Too Bad because its actually a nice car and I was going to trade it in after the new year for a newer model.

Well after letting this go for like 5 months I got around to fixing the pass door handle on a 2009 Hyundai Sonata with around 50 K. It was above 30 so more or less a heat wave.
It was my falt for pulling on the handle one too many times and not waiting for the door to get unlocked.

I pulled the inter part of the door apart BUT I did not need to to this.
One of the main things to look for is the round black plastic cover on the side of the door next to the latch.
8mm bolt. I had a hard drive magnet to magnatize the socket. Still took a lot of time taking the bolt out and in otherwise it will be a pain to get it out of the door.

When I first put it on it did not see to work. The second time it did. I did not have to latch the metal to the handle which I thought was nice. It just using friction? Odd I hope it stands the test of time.
I found mine on Ebay and saved abit from the dealer. I think they all need to be painted unless you don't mind black?
Good luck with your repair.

Same I have a 2010 rear driver side just came off in hand!!! Handle aside from the snap mark inside looks like new - so this isn't a defect??? Dealer charge 130.00 replace. not covered by warranty despite less and 5 years and only 40K miles. Sad to think something so small simple as handle will be remembered when searching for my next car. Currently 3 Hyundais. Mazda has been looking pretty good and I'll need a new car this spring.

Having taken my driver's door apart to replace the actuator, I know all about replacing the door handle. $130 sounds fair. Do you yank/pull on the door handle? It's a piece of plastic and if you do that long enough and hard enough, yes, it will come off in your hand. I don't have my door handle on quite right (it's too cold out right now) so I've learned to baby it a little. Put your thumb in the hole for the lock and push with your thumb; don't grab the handle and yank it to open the door. I once saw someone pulling for all they were worth on their Honda's door handle, trying to get the door open. Then the handle snapped.

Just had a similar thing with my daughter's '07 Sonata..the fob locks and unlocks the doors but the drivers door will not open from the outside. The handle pulls out as if to open the door but it doesn't open! Handle inside and the lock work just fine as do the other three doors. She took it to the dealer near Canton OH, they fished some light inside the door and are telling her it's the actuator they're pretty sure..$145 for the part plus labor.

Just wanted to add my experience to the list. I have a 2008 Sonata Ltd. that in 2013 my driver side rear door handle broke. When I went in for a normal service I had them check it out and sure enough it was the little right angle part that had cracked so the door would not open from the outside.
Asked what the cost would be to get it repaired and was quoted $179. The part was $53 and the rest was to paint the inside of the handle and install it.
Ordered the part myself and had a body shop I know of do the painting and install for a total of $93.

My wife and son have nearly identical '10 Sonatas (one silver, one blue) We have had 5, yep 5, handles break off. We've had such a miserable experience with the service manager at the dealership, we've had the local body shop come to the rescue. Still about $100 bucks apiece. I am looking to give the Hyundai rep for Virginia a call. Doubt, seriously, that they will make good on this issue, but it might make me feel better!
