I have noticed it pinging more last few months, but rarely did before that. Mostly on hills or after upshift, but just getting a bit annoying.
Always use 87 octane.

Any ideas beyond going to 89 octane?
It has about 65,000 miles and runs fine otherwise.
Power and mileage are both good and seem the same. Only the moderate pinging at times is irking me!

Oil changed regularly. Stock spark plugs also.

I have the same car and had exact same problem plus engine oil consumption all because of broken piston ring. Which lead to burn oil and less pressure on that particular cylinder.
So that cylinder had detonation/pinging sound.
I tried premium fuel for a while it definitely burn better which cause very little pinging for sometime.

Hyundai replaced the engine under warranty (short block).

Check your oil level first and keep an eye, it may be same problem what I had.

I have a 2015 Hyundai Sonata 2.4L and have the same issue under load but only when the car is cold. After about 5 minutes it's gone. Hyundai had it in last year and did a carbon cleaner procedure and I still had the same problem. They told me that I should use tier one gas and possibly a higher octane. This car should run on 87 octane however so I am frustrated. This week I brought it back to them and they said they can hear it and that they would try new spark plugs and restart the ECM. They did that and I have the same noise. I am going to go directly through Hyundai corporate for an answer or try another mechanic. I have 76,000 miles on it and it started at about 55,000 I believe.

Run Premium (90-93 octane) top-tier gasoline.
You can blend your own approx 90-91 octane, by learning how to read the fuel gauge on your dash. Once you learn how many gallons of fuel you will need at the pump (you can learn within one gallon), you can blend 87 octane with 93 octane.

Yes, it requires making two purchases and getting two receipts. It's a better option than using 'inferior' 89 octane, which falls slightly short in the 2.4 performance department.

I know! My 2.4 GDI runs best on 93 octane ( no blending anymore).
Our 2.0 MPI Kia will run great on 87 octane (top-tier). Not fussy at all.

Thanks for the info. I do not have a GDI. I think my biggest issue with it is why should I have to change the gas, when the car didn't require that when I got it at 29k miles?
