I just got the Motorala MA-1 wireless dongle. It pretty much worked right immediately. I have noticed that when I turn off the car, the green light remains on the dongle and my phone stays connected to it. I was initially worried if it stayed on all the time it would drain my battery and besides I want my phone to connect to my home wifi instead once I get home. I have noticed that after some time the green light goes out on the dongle and my phone is no longer connected to it. This happened however after I turned the wifi off on my phone, so I'm not sure if that is how it is supposed to work. Does the car project port remain powered on as long as it is connected to the phone? Hope this makes sense. I am excited about having this and was pretty impressed with how easily it was set up and working.

Thanks

I think it will remain on for a few minutes after you lock the door. Maybe next time just walk away from the car and come back after about five minutes. It should disconnect. You can also check out the following post: Does USB port power off automatically?
Thanks. I have noticed that if I wait long enough it will turn off. I think once the Bluetooth to my car is disconnected then the USB is turned off.

I think you're right about that. I got my MA-1 yesterday. It seems it uses Bluetooth to establish a "direct wifi" connection. I think once the Bluetooth is disconnected, the wifi is also disconnected.

Any other differences between wired and wireless that you've found? I've read about lag & disconnects. Experienced them or any other detriments or enhancements to the AA experience using the MA-1 dongle?

Side question for anyone: how do these wireless dongles work with two phones? My wife and I both drive the Sonata. I assume we can each connect our own phones to the MA-1 when we are each driving it on our own, right, but what if we had an errand to run together - is it just luck whose phone connects to the dongle first?

I haven't checked lag but the reviews I have read said it is not an issue.

Disconnects are actually better for me with the MA-1. I used to get disconnected pretty frequently when using a cable, especially when I handled the phone. I went through a few cables, so I'm thinking there was a problem with the USB port on my phone. I have had no disconnections with the MA-1 in a few days of use

Yes, the MA-1 will let you connect to another phone, but you actually have to establish a new Bluetooth connection to switch phones. There is a pairing button on the side of the MA-1. I didn't have to use it during the initial setup, but if you want to change phones, then you will. This reviewer said it was a 20-second process:

I got the Motorola Android Auto adapter a few days ago. It isn't disconnecting on me. It does take a good minute to connect and then roughly five to disconnect once you turn off the car. All of this was expected.

For those that have it, are you using the wireless charger in your car with it? I have tried a couple of times now and my phone gets so hot. I guess it's nothing new, I just haven't used that charger in so long. It makes me reconsider keeping the adapter if I end up having to plug the phone in for power.

Are you just not charging the phone while using it? I haven't had it long enough to experiment in depth. Also, don't have a lot of places to go!

I didn't use the wireless charger much until I got the wireless Android Auto dongle. Now I use the wireless charging pad all the time. It does get a little warm, but it doesn't seem too bad to me (Pixel 6). My biggest problem is now that I'm using the charging pad, I keep leaving the phone in the car!

Using the MA-1 definitely burns the battery quicker, so I try to leave the phone on the charging pad the whole time if I'm using AA. I think the charging pad JUST keeps ahead of the battery drain when using wireless AA, maybe i gain a little bit of a charge, but I'm not sure.

I have the pop-up dash notification that my phone is on the charger too (most of the time).

I agree, the wireless charging pad seems to just keep ahead of the drain.

Also agree about the port remaining powered. I don't think there is any way around it. You might be able to come up with a tasker routine that turns off Bluetooth when you connect to your home WiFi network. Maybe turn it back on after 5 minutes. I haven't used tasker in a long time so not sure it can do it. It is one of the annoyances of these devices. It's tolerable for me. The heat - not sure.

I notice that a notification remains after the port is powered off that says something like "Looking for Android Auto" but it eventually disappears.

For me, it's simply about the fact that it's wireless - the convenience of it. I don't have to plug the phone in. I can have it in my pocket - where it usually is - and Android Auto works great (I have the Motorola ma-1). You don't have to think about it, it just works.

It's also about having less wires - and less clutter - in your car.

I'm using this same adapter in my 2020 Sonata Limited, and it works just fine.
There are a handful of places that have some kind of wireless disruption that causes it to disconnect, but not many.

As for the phone overheating when on AA Wireless and wireless charging, I did a few things to help minimize the issue.

For starters, I turned off Fast Wireless Charging.
Additionally, I created a Tasker profile that triggers on "Display State: Off" that puts the phone into Battery Saver mode, which throttles the CPU.
Throttling the CPU does not really seem to affect AA Wireless usage, and it does help to keep the phone running a bit cooler.

Here is how I mounted the AA wireless module. I used some velcro with adhesive backing. I routed the wire by just tucking it between trim pieces above the USB outlet, up the driver side and left the top exposed. I would still like to tap into the USB and run a more discreet line to the center console to hide all of it but not sure if I will ever get around to it since this set up doesn't bother me too much. The stiffness of the cable keeps it in place along the top edge so from how I see it while driving, I really don't notice it at all.

I've used the MA1 wiith my 2021 Limited for about 2 months now, very happy with it overall (connects in under 30 seconds, solid connection throughout the drive, just as responsive as wired was), but I have had two complaints for you to consider before buying:

1. I also set up my wife's phone when I first installed it, and I can't for the life of me find a convenient way to switch back and forth between our phones when both of us are present. I just keep messing with it and messing with it and messing with our phones until it finally switches over. I drive about 95% of the time when we are both present so not a huge hassle for us, but if you split the car with someone else 50/50, I don't know how you could do it without going mad.

2. I've taken a couple of 5 hour road trips and my phone gets hot and my phone's battery cannot last that long - whether sitting on the Sonata's wireless pad or not. (I have a newer Samsung Galaxy S21 which has an otherwise excellent battery.)

On my recent four-hour drive from Spokane to Seattle with 90+F outside temps most of the way and my Galaxy S20FE on the wireless charger the phone did not overheat and the MA1 functioned flawlessly.
My wife's Galaxy S08 is not connected to the MA1 so don't have the two-phone issue.

Quick update, now that this thread got bumped back up. I had some teething issues with AA Wireless module (as did many Hyundai/Kia owners) but all good lately, or even last few months. I think there was a hiccup in the updates form AA Wireless as well as Hyundai releasing head unit updates at nearly the same time that caused me to use a known work around. Lately, no issues, fires right up using no changes, basically back to the plug and play I expected.

I've been using the AAWireless device for probably close to 2 years now, and it is generally reliable for me, meaning about 90%.

I still run into situations where it shows that it lost connection to the phone, or otherwise doesn't connect. This typically happens when I'm on a trip, pull in to fill my tank, turn off the car, etc. When I turn it back on, this glitch often occurs, requiring me to reboot the phone, or turn off the car, or other intervention to get it reconnected.

It's annoying enough when it happens that I'm considering trying the Motorola MA1.

For MA1 users here - are you experiencing any periodic connection glitches such as the one I describe above?

AA Wireless sucks for me. I was an early adopter, waited 8 months for it, and I do keep it updated, (I have no idea why though since it sucks so badly... maybe I'm hoping it will work someday, but I'm convinced that I have a hardware issue with it that of course can't be fixed via software update).

After the first couple of months I ALWAYS get the message that I need to connect Android Auto to a USB... meaning that the car isn't recognizing the AA Wireless dongle.

I know it's not the USB hub in the car because I've been having to use my cable to connect my phone, and I never, ever get that error message... so it's 100% an AA Wireless device issue... and I've given up trying to deal with their customer service.

I'm on the fence currently as to whether or not I even want to bother buying something else, because I have a Galaxy Fold 4, (very large, very heavy phone), that always pulls my pants down when I carry it, so it never leaves my house or car. When I get to my destination, I just put it in the glove box anyway, (I have an LTE smart watch if I need comms while out and about. ).

I've just come to hate AA Wireless so much.
