Will we be getting Android Auto/Apple CarPlay like the Sonata? I thought I saw somewhere that we would, but nothing "official". Anyone have more info/timeline?

This is what I received after asking Hyundai about what 2016 models will have CarPlay:

Thank you for contacting Hyundai Motor America. We appreciate the opportunity to provide you with more information regarding our 2016 models. Many of our models include navigation and audio, however, only one model will be featuring the Apple Car Play.

The following 2016 models will be equipped with Apple's Car Play feature:

2016 Sonata

Hyundai Motor America and Apple are committed to delivering drivers the best possible experience while using CarPlay in their vehicles. We are currently working together to complete CarPlay integration, and look forward to making it available in other Hyundai models very soon.

We apologize for any disappointment caused by our response. We are happy to provide you with website information where you may sign up for e-mail updates allowing you to get updates regarding models with this feature as soon as they become available.

Hyundai does have some very exciting products coming out, and although we don't have additional model information for the Apple Car Play feature right now, we'd like to encourage you to periodically check http://www.HyundaiUSA.com for the latest information available. If you're interested, you can even sign up to receive updates, news, and special offers by going to CarPlay - Apple OR http://www.hyundaiusa.com/shopping-tools/email-updates.aspx.

Has anyone else heard anything? I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that there will be a wireless update to CarPlay or the ability to go to the dealership & get the update. Thoughts?

I wrote a story on my blog on this topic and IMHO, this isn't going to end well with Hyundai for the following reasons:

- Other companies offer free updates for their infotainment systems. For example, Ford just brought Siri Eyes Free to millions of their vehicles for free not to long ago.
- Hyundai themselves off Android Auto for the Sonata for free as part of a do it yourself upgrade.
- According to the Detroit Free Press, Hyundai promised this functionality for free.

Thus it leaves owners with the feeling of being a victim of "bait and switch" or being shafted for being an Apple user. The optics of that just suck and that's a PR nightmare waiting to happen.

To be honest I could care less because I exclusively use Android. JK. My wife has an Iphone 6s but I'm an android guy. The Tucson's her car.

This news is a bit of a disappointment but she would never use all the features if she had it, however it would be cool.

I was told by our salesman at the time of the purchase that it would be a few months before carplay and android auto became available and it would be free. I was told this back in September. Lol. I never do believe anything these guys say about this stuff during a car purchase. If it's not on the vehicle right then and there, I don't really expect it in future. Now I'm not saying that we shouldn't be offered this feature and at no cost but I personally never expected it anyway.

I'll send an email to Hyundai because there myhyundai website still states delayed availability. Hoping for the best but not expecting it.

I've been able to find two items indicating the latest developments on CarPlay:

Apple CarPlay to be available in Hyundai Tucson | Fleet Auto News (Dated 12/24)

Support for Apple CarPlay will be available on All-new Tucson Active and ActiveX model variants sold from September 2015. Owners of vehicles delivered prior to September will be able to upgrade to CarPlay support via a simple software update, applied either at dealerships or at home.
And a press release dated 1/15:

ALL-NEW 2017 HYUNDAI ELANTRA LAUNCHES WITH APPLE CARPLAY AND ANDROID AUTO

In early 2016, Hyundai will have additional information regarding the availability of CarPlay and Android Auto on other models. This will include information on how existing owners of compatible vehicles with Hyundai’s fourth-generation navigation system or Display Audio can update their vehicles with these features.

Don't be too much in a hurry - the 2016 Honda Civic came out with apple play and there are tons of threads of issues. Better to let the software bugs get fixed. A couple of Civic owners are so frustrated they want to trade the car (which I bet was just venting). There has been a variety of issues.

Hi folks,

Went in to a dealership in Kyle, Texas today to talk about trading in my '13 Genesis coupe for a '16 Tucson to move a notch or two up on the practicality scale. Since I'm in no hurry, I told them I'd rather wait and get a '17 if they can't be certain that the '16s will get Android Auto - this is a dealbreaker for me, and maybe that's weird, but if so, it's less weird in 2016 than it used to be and it's only going to become more common. My 'premium tech package' in my '13 coupe has hated my last two phones (one Android and one Apple) and I don't want to be shelling out money for proprietary tech that won't ever get updated. So, Android auto.

They did all the Internet checking that you guys have done and it certainly sounds (particularly from the FAQ page) that they are going to do this on the 2016 Tucson as a software update. I very much believe that they intend to, but having talked recently to Ford (Escape), Jeep (Cherokee) and Mercedes (GLA), all three of those manufacturers 'intend to' and only Ford has an outside chance of supporting Android Auto as a software update to their SYNC system - and even that's not guaranteed.

I told them that I needed it in writing or else an even trade for a '17. They spent an hour on the phone with Hyundai corporate and couldn't get a straight answer, but the salespeople are going to work over the next several days to try and get to the bottom of this. I don't have my hopes up, but if I find out, I'll let you all know.

Update:

Hyundai customer service (not the dealership) wrote:

---
We apologize for any confusion that may have been produced about the availability of Android Auto on the 2016 Tucson Limited. We are currently only have information that the 2016 and upcoming 2017 models will have the Android Auto software and Apple Carplay, not on release times or models tested with the software.
---

I had asked them just to confirm that it will have it (not when). They appear to have done so.

My reading is that they are specifically saying the 2016 Tucson (and the question I put to them was specifically about that, with the link to the FAQ). The dealer did say that only the Tucsons with the 8" Nav would get it.

The Tucson has the 'Display Audio' system that is Hyundai's new dash unit designed specifically to work with Carplay and Android Auto. That's enough for me!

Best information I have is that Hyundai will make an announcement to anyone with their vehicle registered on MyHyundai once it is available.

They were over a year late on delivering this for the 2015 Sonatas, so while I'm not optimistic that it'll happen in the very near future, I think it will happen. The service guys at one of the local dealership said that the 8" nav on the Tucson is exactly the same system as either the '16 Sonatas or the '17 Elantras (I forget which) that do support both CarPlay and Android Auto - just the software for the Tucson hasn't come down the pipe yet.

As a few of us discovered SIRI is activated by pressing and holding the voice prompt button on the steering wheel. I engaged SIRI yesterday and asked a question and her response was: I cannot answer why you are driving the car. Makes me wonder if Apple CP will behave this way - only when car is not in DRIVE.

Strange. Neither my wife or I have had that happen. I for one use Siri Eyes Free all the time to listen to and respond to text messages. Never had an issue. The only thing that I wish for is if it would notify me when a new text message arrives. The only way to tell is to look at the phone which kind of defeats the purpose of hands free. Or Eyes Free as the case may be.
