American Racing Wheels

Hey everyone, I'm looking into getting some wheels. I don't like the look or feel of wheel covers. I have a bit of an amazon gift card left, and their special 12 month no interesting financing option for wheels would make me able to get this set of wheels ( http://www.amazon.com/American-Racing-Estr...4058&sr=1-2 ) for $20 a month. I really cannot afford all $200 at once, so this is my only option. I just got the car, so I don't want to waste brand new tires by getting different sized wheels, so I'm staying with 14".

Anyway, does anyone own american racing wheels? I've seen one forum member with them, but that's all I could find.

Thank you!

Are you sure that's all four wheels? It says American Racing Estrella (Series AR95) Machined Finish With Clear Coat - 14X6 Inch Wheel.
And that is very inexpendsive for all four wheels. I just don't want you to order it, and only get one in the mail, and be bumming.

But my buddy, tristan had american racing wheels. They were chrome, and still made it through two winters without road salt eating them. my guess is they're good.

Yeah, they are 65.54 per wheel. With my gift card, that's $217 for all four. The amazon promotion is no interesting financing if paid off within 12 months. I'm paranoid and will probably pay it off in a few months less than that to be sure. So around 20-30 a month. Thank you for your reply :)

I'm not trying to lecture you, but if you can't afford $200 for wheels, perhaps you should save your money for something else... like an emergency.
Yea you might want to allocate a little more money towards wheels...I have American Racing wheels, I love them, they seem to be pretty high quality. I would be skeptical about $200 a wheel though because I know the retail price on mine were about $300 (Canadian) PER WHEEL....

Sorry for the confusion. :p

I can more than afford 200, it's just that I'm not a huge car guy and can't justify more than that for wheels, personally.

And I've looked at the same wheel on different websites, and that is the correct price. $60-70 per wheel.

You don't need to pay out the **** for a decent set of wheels. I paid 300$ for a complete set of used wheels, 16x7.5 with tires.

I'll be honest, I always find 14" wheels with bubble tires really, REALLY dumb looking. The best thing you can do to your car is to get rid of those HORRIBLE OEM tires and get a set of nice wheels with good tires. Yes it might cost 4 to 5 times more but you'll enjoy the car that much more.

You can sell the OEM tires for 100$ to get some money back.

Thank you for your reply. Here's a tirerack picture. What do you guys think? (Apologies for the remedial questions, this is the first car I've ever modified. Just want to make sure I do it right without making it look stupid.

I also think the 14's are small. I say rock the steelies until you need new tires then opt for the 15's or 16's. They look the best on the hatchback, imo.

I may be in the minority here, but I think the 16s with 205/45 tires look a bit off, even though that's what my SE came with. Personally, I prefer a just bit more sidewall (but not too much). If I replace my stock wheels, I'll be going with 15x7 wheels and 205/50 tires with around a -30 offset.
17's with 205/40 ftw!! LOL

I was going to get those wheels a few months ago and everyone said to wait and save for bigger rims as well haha

I think you can also get those rims in 15" for like $70 a wheel and the 16" for $80 a wheel. plus or minus 10 bucks. So not too much of an increase and you'll get a "nicer, better" size. But you will also need new rubber lol

Gir, there is nothing wrong with 14-inch wheels with OE size tires. The tires are cheaper, the ride is better, and you will get better fuel economy. You also don't have to dodge every pothole in the road. The steering feel and transitional handling may not be quite as sharp as with larger wheels with shorter sidewalled tires; but I have pushed my 14-inchers to their limits, and have found them fairly grippy, and very easy to control. Short sidewalled "rubber-band" tires are not as forgiving at the limits of adhesion, as they will break away more abruptly. I don't know what kind of driving you do, but the OE tires are adequate for the vast majority of people.

Personally, I like having a set of summer and winter tires. Winter tires go on my OE 14-inch steelies, and for the summer I bought a set of lightweight 15x7 wheels and put some 205/55/15 Yokohama S. Drive's on them. I find that size to be perfect for both track days and commuting. I would never want a larger wheel than that on this car. Large wheels are a pure styling fad. They are heavy, and the tires are expensive. If you want the look, go for it - that's up to you, but don't let anyone convince you that you "need" bigger wheels. And don't let people here tell you it looks like a "clown car". Everyone here drives a clown car whether or not they are willing to admit it. :whistling:

or you can be like all the "cool" people that rock them big wheels... i like dodging potholes makes my driving experience enjoyable (except when i hit one). but on a serious note its all really on your preference none of us will be enjoying your ride the way you do. i sacrificed my ride comfort to get the car looking the way i wanted to look and that is why i put some 18's on mine wrapped with 215/35/18. some might say its too much for the car but hey its my car.

i say go for the 14's you would be saving a lot more money in the long run and would still keep it away from the stock look

Yea I went for 17's cause I like the look and I got an awesome deal...but for the best combination of comfort and looks the best option would be 15" or 16" but like everyone else says depends on your opinion and needs...and if you want to keep the 14 inch steels as your wheels I'm sure you can find some pretty decent tires.

IMO, the American Racing Estrella's are the or one of the Least expensive wheels they offer. We sold the crap out of them at PepBoys in ghetto North Las Vegas. Honestly, they are ok for the money, but I would save for something a lil bit nicer. Like a set of Motegi's (also sold by AR), I have the Riax Monza wheels, that AR offered for a while until they stopped producing them. The Estrella's can dent easily with a decent pothole, so becareful with them, if thats what you decide on. We have put the Estrella's on countless vehicles, and they only look decent on some vehicles. The picture of them on our cars that you posted up just dont do justice. Before you are set on buying them, head to a local PepBoys and see if they have them on Display, then make up your mind to see if that's what you really want. Also TheTireRack has alot of nice wheels, for decent price's.

Well, I'm thinking about this again. Didn't want to start a new thread for it.

Calling some local places and wal mart tomorrow to see how much it would be to swap the tires from the OEM wheels to the estrella's. Hopefully not too much... I'd just be bringing in the stock wheels with tires on them as well as the new wheels, so they wouldn't have to screw with jacking a car up and messing with lugs.

If it isn't much, I think I'm finally going to bite the bullet and order them. But I HATE chrome, and I've heard about pitting issues on these wheels. Not to mention I LOVE LOVE LOVE white wheels on blue cars, so I think I'll paint the estrellas white. Probably after I have them put on, just in case they don't fit for some reason, I can return them.

Have you guys ever painted a set of wheels? I'm looking over tons of DIY's so I can plan ahead and make sure I won't mess up. I want it to hold up for a very long time.
