Air Conditioning Question

Hi y'all.

When I test drove a Sonata Eco last week, I noticed that the AC only pumped out cold air when it was on the "Max AC" setting. As soon as I moved the knob up a bit - still well in the blue territory, mind you - warmish air started coming from the vents. Basically felt like just the fan was on. Power-wise, it was set to "2".

Is this something that's common among Sonatas, or Eco's in particular? Or is this possibly just a result of the car sitting on the lot for a while, and maybe the AC needs a recharge? Living in Florida, good AC is obviously an absolute requirement, and I shouldn't need to keep it on Max all the time just to ensure cold air.

That's one of the minor annoyances for me on this car. When 1st purchased, I thought there was a problem as well until I figured it out. Can't recall any other car I've driven that operates the A/C this way where if set on max you only get recirculated cabin air. Would be nice where if you do bump the A/C up a notch to get out of the recirculated mode, that the A/C would stay on instead of having to manually press the A/C button again. Oh well, have gotten use to it already.

Yeah, my mistake on the first test drive is what DRFUNKENSTEIN is referring to. I didn't realize that when I moved it off of Max, the A/C shut off. Weird but I can live with it. Considering that I almost never put it on Max, it shouldn't bother me too much.

Anyways, thanks everyone for your responses.

there is a flaw in the design. my 2015 sonata does the same thing. not enough people complain so they don't plan on doing anything. need to contact manufacturer and open up a case. horrible customer service when nobody else ever complained about thing s like this. incompetence on their part. please pursue.

The warmish air is most likely the result of the warmer outside air mixing with the air conditioned air.

I am not sure if the ECO has it, but you can most likely just press the re-circulation button to force the car to take the cooler air from the cabin instead of the warmer outside air.

That is how the MAX setting differs from the standard AC setting...so that should solve your problem.

There are three settings:

1. Fan only, blows in fresh air
2. AC blows in chilled fresh air.
3. Max recirculates chilled air.

Max works great because it cools the air that is already partially cooled. I think that the recirculate function is automatically turned off when the defroster is on.

If your windows are fogging up don't use the recirculate function.

In bitter cold weather recirculate will warm up the car faster but you will have to switch to fresh air fairly early as the windows will fog up.
