2023 Hybrid DTC Codes

Here's some interesting info if this should happen to you. I have a '23 Santa Fe hybrid with just under 3,000 miles. Everything has been flawless, with a long trip included. Parked last Monday night. Hit the go button on Tuesday afternoon to run an errand, got multiple dash lights and warning messages. These messages and lights would go off and on each stop/go sequence. The warnings were something like "check side safety" and "check front safety" and "check brake fluid" (my memory not so good, so may vary from these.) It also triggered an alert to BlueLink. This showed two codes: C136081 and C174191. These are both "Chassis" codes. To be sure they were valid, I reset them, they came back immediately. A day later, the code C186286 came on, but it reset itself. After a couple of days (while waiting on a callback from the dealer), the on/off stuff didn't occur every stop/go event. That was nice, since the chime for each notification was annoying. I also was getting notices from BlueLink to my phone of these events.

So, while installing my spare tire from the parts I bought thanks to the efforts of some of you guys, I had an idea of sorts. This being a new car, I had only looked under the hood to admire a clean engine bay. I raised the hood and checked the brake fluid level, and it was below the "low" mark! Run to Advance and got a bottle of DOT4 and filled it to an inch under "full". (Side note: don't pour it in normally, it'll run that fill neck over fast. You have to let it percolate down.) Anyhoo, got in turned it on, and all the lights and warnings were gone, except for the check engine light. And that went away after a few on/offs of the ignition.

Later I got that return call from the service dept. at my dealership. We had a nice talk on the events. He cautioned me to observe the braking action and fluid level for a while. I chastised Hyundai for either shipping them a car with low fluid and also them not catching it on the delivery inspection. He agreed, for what that's worth. I'm hoping that is the true cause. I didn't see any evidence of fluid leakage but will look with a light next time.

I asked why there were so many warning lights for something that simple, and he couldn't answer other than to offer that it sounded like anything speed related was affected.

I was careful on that first drive to make sure things worked and there were no safety issues. Lane assist worked, but lane keep and smart cruise control did not. All cameras worked, along with collision avoidance and parking assist. It blitzed all radio and seat settings for all users. All hybrid functions were normal.

Thanks for listening!

I've never heard of a vehicle being low on brake fluid from the factory. Not that it couldn't happen, but it'd be extremely unlikely. So monitor that level like a hawk, and hopefully that was it. The good news is there's a low fluid level sensor, so no risk of losing your braking, at least with a slow leak. And check your coolant level too, since it always needs topping off several times when new. And of course oil level as well. Good luck, and keep us posted.

Yeah, guess we're in the age of the 'nevers', no? Ha ha. Never seen so many recalls and defects before, and from ALL manufacturers. So now we're in the age of 'choose your poison'. That's why I don't want to sell my SF now, and rather wait for clear indication the DCT is defective (if it happens). Plus I have no freaking idea what the heck I'd replace it with. I have no alternatives; don't really like anything else. Plus I'd lose my proverbial a$$ if I did, to the tune of $15K or more. Fun times  .

More info: I added brake fluid on Jan. 19, to about 3/4 " below full. I put a little dot with a sharpie at that level. I checked the fluid Jan. 27, and it was down nearly two inches! There is no wet areas on the mat under the brake pedal inside the car. The ABS system is dry. I can't see any leakage on any of the wheels. So where's it going?

I have an appt for service, but not until March. Pedal feel is normal, and stopping is normal. I'll keep an eye on it. And I'll post the results...

It's leaking somewhere; you just have to find where. And remember it only leaks when under pressure, so it's not going to drip in your garage. If you want to know from where, go for a short run using the brakes HEAVILY, and check for leaks starting with the master cylinder, which would leak INSIDE the car (on the carpeting), so look for stains or evidence of a leak there first. Then you can continue to the reservoir, ABS unit, and calipers. It could also be somewhere else, but highly unlikely; it's typically a seal. But start with topping off your reservoir to the FULL line, for your own (and your family's) safety. A tech will apply pressure to the reservoir, and the leak should reveal itself quickly. Good luck.

Went out to get in car to go to a doctor appointment and the dash lit up again, and this time there was a warning to turn off car and inspect brake system. Fluid was still at a good level, so there are deeper problems. I hit the SOS button and got a tow truck to take it to the dealer. Also noticed that it put the car in limp mode, so driving anywhere was basically impossible. It's currently at the shop being worked into the system.

Hate to say it, but the 2021 hybrid and this 2023 hybrid has not inspired confidence. More problems in less than 10,000 miles than all my prior vehicles.

On the plus side you got the car into the dealer before March! Hopefully they can sort the issue out with the brake system quickly.

Wish I knew, too. I lost at least a pint overall from when it all started. No drips in driveway, I went under and inspected each wheel, they were all dry. It's pretty crowded at the firewall, but if any leaks were there, should have been a drip on concrete. Inside, the carpet is dry and the push rod was dry. This being all electronic, I don't think any vacuum is tied in to suck it into the engine to burn. Maybe on the secondary master cylinder? All I know is, when the braking unit goes, you're pretty well toast. That unit controls a lot more than just brakes. It went into limp mode, wouldn't go over about 10 mph.
