2017 SFS USB does not work/malfunction

Got a 2017 SFS 2.4L w/convenience and premium packages. The 2.4L version only comes with one USB. I bought it, brought it home, plugged in my iPhone 7...did not power it up or recognize it at all. I tried at least 3 different devices and 7 different cords, still no effect.

The USB and AUX are a single assembly, but the AUX works just fine and so does all the other stuff (radio, cigarette plug-ins)

Went back to dealership and they said they replaced it and checked all the fuses, still DOES NOT work. I am going back in on Tuesday and they said they called Hyundai Technical gurus.

If I don't hear back with a solution soon, I will request that they replace the assembly AGAIN.

My question is, has anyone had this issue and if so, how did it get resolved?
Thank you for your time.

Hi Motorman89, my understanding of the USB in the Sport, is that the USB is one way only. It takes input only. It will accept data but it will not charge any devices. I believe that information is in the manual regarding the multimedia suite installed in the vehicle.

Hope this helps.

We have a 2017 SFS, 2.0T, Premium package. The USB connection will charge devices - I use it to connect my phone for Android Auto. I am familiar with the USB / AUX cable as we have one in our 2010 SF GLS. We may have one for the 2017, but I have never used it.

Sorry, I am not familiar with iPhones and their connections / ports, can you connect to it with only a USB cable? (not the combo USB / AUX)

edit - I think the USB / AUX combo cable may be only for IPODS...

Also, try connecting a thumb drive. You should be able to browse the drive and play music. The USB port should provide power to the drive.

Page 4-191 of the owners manual has some tips for using the USB connection. You should be able to locate a PDF version to make it easier to search.

Search for my posts - I posted some links to some short USB cables and a charger available from Amazon.

Good luck, and best of luck with your new ride!

Excellent info! Unfortunately the issue is that the USB won't ready ANYTHING. No thumb drives, no android devices, or ipods, or iphones. Since the USB/AUX is a single assembly (but separate ports), you would think it SHOULD work. Essentially, when i plug in the AUX, it works fine, but nothing registers when plugged into the USB. The funny thing is that the light around the usb port (when i turn on my night lights) works, but the USB port doesn't actually work. So it's just blowing my mind here what could possibly be wrong.

So when you have your iPhone plugged in and you change the audio source on the head unit, iPod isn't an option?

I have an iPod touch plugged in to just the USB and it works fine. Hit the media button and it goes to the iPod display.

The USB jack provides very little power though so I got one of those USB splitter cords meant for bus powered external hard drives and plug the secondary cord into a high output charger. That way I can get good charge a d be connected to Android Auto.

@MButkus No, i did not test the USB before leaving the dealership (only because i have literally NEVER heard of a USB NOT working considering how common of a technology it is) They replaced the USB assembly once, they are waiting to hear from the Hyundai tech people to see if they have any advice. I'll give the dealer the benefit of the doubt, but if they don't hear from Hyundai by tuesday (6 days since this started), then I will request that they replace it again, and if they say no I'll just go to another dealer service dept. It just blows my mind that this common tech is such an issue hah
@brandon.mol No, there is no recognition that anything is even plugged in. I tried thumbdrives, ipods, ipads, iphones, android devices...It does not even see it. When i use AUX, it see it or when I use BT it sees the media. When I plug in the USB...nothing, doesn't register anything at all. I figure i'd post on here and see if anyone knew of a fix besides taking it back to the dealer and waiting, but probably my best option is for them to keep digging and probably replace it again.

Sorry to hear it is not working yet. It looks like you have done everything but stick your hand up under the dashboard. You probably have thought about this already.... I would take a few things to connect to the USB when you visit the dealer on Tuesday - thumb drive, iPod, etc. and a few USB cables.

Only guessing here since I don't know where the wires run from the USB connection for data and power. It may be something as simple as a connector not being seated properly on the back of the radio / head unit. Or the radio itself. It could even be some pins in the connector on the back of the radio that got pushed out - bad connector.

It makes me wonder if they tested the panel after they replaced it, or just replaced it without testing.

I had a Ford dealer like that years ago - they were really good at replacing what I told them needed replacing. When it came to trying to diagnose a problem they weren't worth crap. Maybe my dealer didn't want to pay for their techs to diagnose a problem. I was having coolant issues and at one point used some higher performance coolant I had left over from my RX7 days. I went to pick up the vehicle after some service and the service manager started giving me some grief and yelled 'the coolant is RED!' Yeah, how 'bout that, you need to get out more... Their service department lost a customer that day.

Good luck on Tuesday. Take some stuff to connect to the USB and have them demonstrate how it is supposed to work.

It's possible, but haven't seen it yet on the Hyundai forums. I would say if the USB port isn't bad, then it's either the internal wiring/cable from the USB to the head unit or the head unit itself is bad.

But it should most definitely do USB/iPod for iPhone (actually it should do Carplay since you have a 2017), and AA if you have an Android with the appropriate version.

I know that there are some good techs out there but this is just an example of how many techs are stupid AF. The default should not be, sorry dude, it's your phone" without ever checking if it works on another device. I can't stand people in jobs that require some diagnostic skill who have absolutely ZERO ability. When the original poster stated that he had tried several modes of media and that the dealer replaced the port, my next thought was to check the head unit and I am not a Hyundai technician. I don't understand what is so hard about this but people who get paid for it are screwing this up on a daily basis. I would think if it's your job that you could figure it out the first time or at least test it after you think you fixed it.

Sorry for the rant, this kind of idiocracy drives me nuts. I guess this is the next generation for ya. A bunch of dipshits that never took a pen apart in middle school.

Exact same symptoms and issue here. 2017 Santa Fe XL. They replaced the port and were hesitant to replace the head unit and said it was my phone the whole time until I pulled the service rep and mechanic out and showed them my phone and cable working instantly on one of their new cars on the lot. Also printed this article for them, they replaced the head unit and whaddya know, it worked.
Thanks for the backup! :)

Still having issues with my iPod touch and the system rebooting the iPod whenever I get into my Santa Fe. I've had the system checked out and have even tried it in other 17 Santa Fe's. When you have your iPod on shuffle, the radio will get an error message and go back to the first song on your iPod. Extremely frustrating. If I have my iPod playing a certain downloaded disc, and then restart the car it won't go back to the place where it left off. Dealer tells me it's incompatibility but the manual claims my generation touch is ok! I've tried different iPods and cables all to no avail.

I just bought a used 17 Santa Fe today. I find that my USB port both charges AND provides data. However, the port itself is defective because it is loose as a ho.

The cable I'm using has worked fine in other USB applications. The problem I have is that if the connector gets bumped by road surface or if the phone moves and disturbs the cable then I lose my Android auto connection.

I did a Google search for 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe USB/aux connector and the part is only like $30. But would you believe the dealer told me that they won't replace it?
