2013 Sonata Steering Problem - Solved!

We purchased a brand new 2013 Sonata just a couple of months ago (April 2013). We liked everything about the car except the steering.

Like many others we found it difficult to keep the car in the lane going straight. It was very easy to wander, and driving was feeling like a full-time job. We spoke to the service department at the dealer we purchased it from and they said that there was an adjustment that they could do. We took it in and they said they did the adjustment. However, whatever they did it didn't seem to make a whole lot of difference.

We saw comments on the Internet that some found an adjustment that made a difference and others just tried a number of different things. I called Hyundai Customer Relations and inquired about a steering adjustment. They said there is none. So I lodged a complaint with them stating that we are not satisfied with the steering. They suggested we take the car to another Hyundai service location.

We did take it to another service center and were very fortunate to get a wonderful service desk person, and she brought out their master technician for us to speak to. We described the problem and he said that it is a problem with the Sonatas that their steering is too sensitive, that it is because it has electronic steering instead of hydraulic steering. We told him that we had driven a 2012 Sonata before we purchased the 2013 and it didn't feel that way. He said that the 2012 had an adjustment, but he didn't think the 2013 did. But he decided to check anyway.

He brought out his service computer, and plugged it into a port near the steering wheel. He brought up the selection dealing with steering. There were two line items. The first line item was not what he wanted, but the second one was. In that second selection were four options for the steering: GLS, Hard, Soft, and Sport. We chose Soft. (It was set on GLS.) It actually took him less than five minutes to make the adjustment.

We immediately took it out for a test drive, and before we left the parking lot, my husband said that he could feel the difference already. It has been five days since then, and both of us feel that it is a tremendous improvement from what the steering was before. It is still not as soft as our 2000 Camry, but it is a very big improvement from how it was before. We can now feel comfortable driving the car, and we are looking forward to taking it out on a long drive over the holiday, without swerving back and forth on the road.

Apparently the first service center did nothing to change the factory setting, but we watched the technician at the second service center change the selection. We went back to him after the test drive and told him our thoughts. He said he would test it out himself later on another 2013 Sonata, as he also felt the steering is too sensitive for his liking.

TO THOSE WHO ARE NOT SATISFIED WITH THE SONATA STEERING: See if you can get a tech to hook up his computer and make the adjustment for you.

TO HYUNDAI: Please send out a service bulletin to all your service techs informing them of this option. You will have many, many, MANY, more happy Sonata customers, and many less complaints. As to safety, customers need to feel that they can keep the car in the lane. Having a wandering car is certainly NOT safe.

This is excellent information and I'm glad you got to see the process to fix it. I was unaware of this until recently when my steering rack was replaced. The tech reprogrammed my 2011 Limited with a stiffer setting than what I had before and the change made the vehicle steering feel more real. I was very happy with the change. The rack was replaced for a noise condition which it did not fix. That turned out to be a lower ball joint bad.

Every owner should have the option of the steering level they desire.

This is great news and thanks for sharing. My 2011 Sonata does not have a problem but many owners do. This should help a lot of owners providing their Hyundai service department co-operates. Some more expensive autos have an adjustment where the steering can be modified by the driver as needed. Such autos are priced well above the Sonata line.

The information you have shared is what the forum needs from owners. Thanks.

So what does this do? Increase the amount of electric assist?

My car steers very easily around town, but as I build speed on the highway it starts to feel heavier, not sure how else to describe it.

I wonder what the Limiteds come set at from the factory, because I've heard wandering complaints from Limited owners too. Surely the SE comes set at "sport".

I'm supposed to take my car to the dealer tomorrow to have them check for codes, and I'm trying to decide if I want to mention this.

For what it's worth, my 2011 GLS had a mind of its own when it came to going straight on crowned roads. My 2013 however is not like that at all. It's a Limited and drives just the way you want it to. Even on heavily crowned roads it keeps reasonably straight. Steering effort is very similar between the two cars. It feels to me like its more of a geometry issue with the 2011. The 13 feels refined.

I started to ask about this when I was at the dealer yesterday for my BlueLink error, but I was already late for work and I was ready to get out of there.

Today I went to Hyundai service center to replace the camber bolts on both sides of front wheels. Surprisingly, the technician wants to replace the original bolts with two adjustable camber bolts that we can find from aftermarket shop. He said that he received the bolts from Hyundai Service Center from Korea. I refused to replace them since the camber's reading was within limit. Anyone here have replaced the camber bolt with adjustable camber bolt before? Does it solved the steering problem?

So the setting we want is Sport? I thought the OP said to have it set to Soft.

My previous vehicle had this same issue so I was sorta used to it but I let my wife drive the car on a 2 hour trip over the weekend for the very first time. I never told her anything about the steering.

For a while she never complained about driving the car but half way through she said . "I feel like i'm zig zagging". I told her it was probably just the ruts in the road. On the way home I had a few stretches that were just like that. I'm at the point where I need to get mine into the shop so they can look at it. I was just hoping we had a definitive setting. Like everyone agreed SOFT was the fix. So now I'm not sure what to ask for.

Keep us posted.

Thx

You are right the OP did say "soft" setting. And I questioned that too...but the Service mgr indicated "sport". I then found another post from the Edmunds forum that I copied below:

Brought my 2013 Sonata GLS into the dealer last week and had them change my steering preference to Sport mode. This made steering more substantial in that it is no longer very sensitive and has some torque and requires some effort to steer now. Don't let the dealer tell you that there is no way to do this, because there is. They just hook it up to their computer and select Sport mode from the three options avail which are comfort, normal and sport. Hope this finds you all well!

Not sure if this clears up anything or not, but "sport" setting from the above Edmunds forum post seems to sound more correct.

We will see.........once the setting is made probably next week I will report my results!

I'm surprised that this thread is not more popular than it is......maybe this problem is not as common as I thought.

Either way, we have two different forum members with two different steering settings:

First one is- GLS, Soft, hard and Sport
Second one is- Comfort, normal and Sport

I wonder why the difference? I know my steering wonders, I can't wait to get more feedback as to which setting works best on a GLS.

I read on another site that it's "comfort", "normal", and "sport". I also read that the settings are simply to tell the steering gear what size wheels the car has, and what suspension it has. I don't think its really meant to change the feel of the steering.

But yeah, my car wanders too. It's weird, but it almost seems worse some days than others. It kinda makes me mad because I bought this car so I could use it on trips (my truck drinks too much gas), but it looks like I'll still be using rentals.

Thank you!!. Is your Sonata a GLS or SE? I stopped by the dealer this morning in hopes I could get my car in for this but they were pretty booked and suggested I setup my appointment for tomorrow.

Just wondering if my SE would already be in Sport or not. I will print out that photo and bring it to them.

Thank you for updating us and including that. :)

I wonder if SE's are preset to Sport. Guess I'll find out tomorrow. Im sure they'll want to do an Alignment check as well.

You know if I had to describe the way mine feels. Its like if you were towing a trailer and how the wind would push the trailer and make you counter steer. Seems as soon as I correct from one direction it tends to drift to the other. Oh and lord forgive you if your wife tells you to look at ANYTHING else besides the road...... you'll find yourself quickly out of your lane. Acck.

That's exactly how mine was. Not now !

My steering doesn't self center very well at highway speeds. I can steer into a curve and let go of the wheel, and the car will keep tracking around the curve by itself until I straighten it.

At low speeds around town it feels perfect, but once I get up to highway speeds it's like something tightens up in there and won't let the car self correct.

What model years have this programming option ?
