Have 2013 Sonata GLS. When I have the steering wheel in the center 12:00 position while parked then turn about 2% or so left or right there is a thump sound with about a 5% play in the overall motion from the 12:00 position. Only notice while parking and very slow speeds. No thump going over bumps or taking wide turns at speed. Steering feels good overall and responsive. Just have the noise and play.

thanks

There is NO play when you have a "mushed" coupler...it is a damper between the steering shaft and the EPS unit. (to be clear: there IS play between the EPS and shaft, but not the steering itself)

I missed the part about the play. My girlfriend's doesn't have any play, just the "thump" sound just off center and a slight binding you feel off center either way, while driving at highway speeds.

Maybe the vehicle in question has a bad coupler and something else like a loose tie rod?

I replaced my coupler and did not find it an easy task (many here, say it is). Take your time and you can save a few hundred dollars...the part is about $2!

I punched in the vin for my girlfriend's 2013 Sonata and it says it does not qualify. Maybe us Canadians got the shaft? I thought I remembered her getting the letter about the extended coverage but she's gotten a lot of letters about different recalls for the airbag and the connecting rod failure.

It's only an annoyance...I haven't heard anyone say it cause damage to their EPS interface. The shop manual says to remove the whole steering column, so ask around...some charge $400 for the job.

My wife (therefore I :) ) have a 2013 Sonata Hybrid Limited which has the similar problem. And it's getting worse. I now get "reports" every other day; it used to be about once a month. :) This happens ONLY when the ignition is on and also happens when going over a bump, of which OK has many. Is this still the coupler problem? She's been told that the steering motor needs to be replaced at a cost of $1200 for the motor alone.

Sadly, I don't know if that is true..

When I type my VIN number on the website it says this..

Your Vehicle Qualifies.
Hyundai Motor America is revising the warranty for the rubber coupling in the motor driven power steering (MDPS) assembly on 2007-2015 Elantra Sedans, 2009-2012 Elantra Touring models, 2011-2014 Sonata Sedans, and 2011-2015 Hybrid Sonata Sedans to 10 years from the date of original delivery or the date of first use, or 100,000 miles, whichever occurs first. This coverage is automatic; there is no action needed on your behalf.

Maybe it's something that isn't out publicly yet? I see this one, but this isn't to do with the coupling https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2022/MC-10207802-0001.pdf
My car is also at 180k miles, so I don't think I have a shot.
