2012 Sonata strut/shock system problem

I accidentally wrote this whole thing in my introduction before I noticed it wasn't a forum post. I hope I'm in the right spot now.

I'm Shannon, I live on South shore area of Massachusetts. I own a 2012 sonata that I bought new. I'll apologize now if I don't use the correct or technical name for something, I only know the very bare minimum about cars. THE PROBLEM I'M HAVING is I need new FRONT passenger & driver side strut/shocks but I can't find an already assemble strut/shock system for the 2012 Sonata:( After finding nothing online I called the Hyundai dealer I bought the car from and they gave me a price of $1050. FOR PARTS ONLY and anywhere from $1400- $1700 including the labor! I thought that was outrageous so I went to an auto body guy (he does paint, not mechanical) that I know and had him do some calling around. He found out that they only made the 2012 design of the strut/shocks for that year only and Hyundai still hasnt "released" the design yet so other aftermarket companies can't make them. Hyundai can't even track me down an already assembled strut/shock! Because the auto body guy called as a business he got a price of $786 for parts only (they get around 20%-25% off retail). He explained to me there's 9 parts that make up the system and I might not need all the parts but if someone pulls it apart and doesn't have the parts on hand then my car could be tied up for over a week while they wait for delivery. I had/have someone willing to switch the old assembled system out for the new one BUT he can't do it if it's in all separate pieces. I clean home & offices so I'm driving from here to there all day on top of hauling my son all over the world. I can barely afford to drop the $ for the strut/shock system parts never mind a week off of work. Does anyone have any ideas to help me?? Is there a "secret part store" that carries everything you need that guys know about and woman don't lol:) Would a different year sonata strut/shock assembled system fit my 2012? Does anyone know when Hyundai releases there system designs so I can buy it cheaper from another company?

Who told you that you need new struts? are the old ones leaking? is the car not controllable?

If all you need is the strut... see an online Hyundai parts dealer.

Strut mount/bearing, bumper/bumpstop, bellows/dustcover, insulator.... can be found at any autopart store. And, you simply reuse what is not worn out or broken.

Unless your spring is broken or front end sagging, reuse it.

You can go fancy full adjustable for:
2011-2013 Sonata HSD Coilovers - Shark Racing

Hyundai released the designs of the YF Sonata. Problem is, Hyundai then revised it in 2011 after a few months of production. Why tool up for a part that is still under warranty/no demand... for a few years. I expect most parts will be available in a couple years when these cars start aging and on 2nd/3rd/4th owners. Its a disposable car with other issues which makes parts makers wonder why bother. Hard for a manufacturer to take the risk of reverse-engineering parts for a car that'll be clogging salvage yards after the engine or transmission fails outside warranty.

If the local junk yard recycler has low mileage parts, like in the earlier posts ebay links, I'd use them. Just make sure that the strut bearings are greased(if possible) or replaced.

Thank you for replying:) Fancy is definitely out of my price range. The car is not uncontrollable, no sagging, I havnt seen any liquid on the ground so i dont think its leaking. I was told by a few people over the last couple months that i need new ones because the car rides very rough and when i go over a tiny bump it hits it hard and makes a loud bang noise like I hit a deep pothole. I havnt opened the Hyundai links yet, I need to wait until later tonight to look at them on my computer rather than my phone. Please don't laugh at what I write next but I want to make sure I understood everything you said..... So assuming my spring isnt broke I can buy just the Hyundai strut (which is the stick looking part that goes through the spring, right). And whatever other parts of the system I might need I can buy easily; are the other parts just generic parts that fit all years? Because I can't find any after market front strut/shock parts for the 2012, other than at hyundia and for a ridiculous amount of money. When I do an online search it's only the rears people are selling.

It is strange. Rock Auto and Advance Auto do not list a replacement strut for front, but this seller at Ebay list KYB for front?

Front Passenger Right Strut Assembly KYB Excel-G 334995 Fits Hyundai Sonata | eBay

Front Driver Left Strut Assembly KYB Excel-G 334996 Fits Hyundai Sonata | eBay

I used KYB in a 99 Saturn and there were very good. I only re-greased the mount bearings. The problem is you are in a location that may have a lot of rust from road salt. Springs can break. People I know usually replace the strut mount when doing struts and re-use everything else. Problem is aftermarket ones can be noisey/poor quality. OEM would be the way to go if you need to replace them.

The KYB kit is worth questioning as the PN's show usage prior to 2010. KYB Online Parts Catalog This is why you research prior to buying anything on ebay/amazon...

Loud bang noise in suspension requires professional opinion. Could be anything with these cars.

Yep, that is what I was thinking.

Might make sense to do the booz-style trip to NH and get a second opinion from Hyunday dealer there. NH seems dirt cheap compared to MA. They probably see in their database that you had purchased the car from them and since you are still around - there might be something that makes their dealership the most convenient to you. And the convenience nowadays is a pricey luxury. Why not charge an extra dime? I might be toatally wrong with the assumptions above, but 1.5k for freaking struts replacement - please who are we kidding. I wonder why they haven't offered you to swap the whole car :)

My advice will be to (at least for the time being -as you need time to become slightly mote fluent with your car parts/repirs etc by reading this nice forum, for instance) refrain from purchasing parts online as you need to know exactly which ones and in case you miss/mix anything - you might end up with delays/additional trips to dealer/etc. Trying to find a dealer who cares might be a slightly better alternative as opposed to local guys (no disrespect is meant, but there are some characters out there that rip off like irresponsible dealers - hundrens of Bbb reports are the proof). Also might be good to check a subforum on dealers good and bad. You will be shocked on how different they are. In my opinion, there are too many bad apples there, that's why I think doing some cherry picking is the right thing to do.

You guys are awesome:) Getting any info/options from Hyundai (other than the 1 solution that will cost me a fortune) is impossible. I have lots of different options for me to look into over the weekend. I'll keep everyone informed. Feel free to send anymore advice/suggestions you can think of, I appreciate all I can get!

- The eBay stuff does say it's for a 2012 but I believe its wrong. After the auto body guy explained why i was having a hard time finding them i decided to do a little more research into the few companies i kept seeing that makes strut/shocks. I spoke with the kyb & Monroe manufacturers and neither make parts for the 2012. I then called a few companies that look like there pretty big companies (I don't have my notes in front of me but I think they were Whitley, geek parts & auto anything) but they don't have anything for the fronts on a 2012.

-I'm actually heading to Salem NH this coming Thursday..... I will definitely do the research to find a Hyundai dealer with good reviews in the Salem area and see if they can help me more than this dealer did.

-I know I should bring it to a professional but I can't afford to throw $1400- $1700 into it for front strut/shocks:( Honestly I think that price is outrageous for a regular everyday driver. If I'm wrong and this is a normal price please let me know because I feel like I'm getting ripped off with a price that high (especially since $1,050 of that price is just for parts). I understand that everything on this forum is just a suggestion and I still have to do the research on my side to verify if it would work but I'm fine with that. I don't mind doing all the research/leg work, I just don't know enough about cars to think of ideas that might work.

Off to work.... Everyone have a great day:)

Might I suggest that you locate your local FireStone Auto Repair (who do this kind of work) and see what they diagnosis and recommend. I've done lots of business (when I didn't want to DIY) over the years with good results with my local FireStone store.

FWIW: I've replaced my stock struts/shocks/springs in order to lower my car and still get a very good ride using Eibach springs and TruHart struts/shocks (Lifetime warranty on parts) myself in an afternoon for under ~$500. Very pleased with the results.

Likewise, FWIW had Firestone tell me I need to replace my Front Struts almost 2 years ago - the price quote on it was 800 total, parts and labor. 1.5K is absurd.

I ended up doing it myself, but I wouldn't pay more than 800-900 for the repair.

As others have mentioned, may be worth it to get another opinion to make sure it's actually the struts themselves. Just a bang could mean a lot of things with these cars.

I am considering to replace my front struts but I was exploring KYB since I have a very good experience using KYB shocks for all of the cars I've owned. My 2012 GLS is now on it 124k kms. It is just so annoying that there is no direct part number from KYB's on-line catalog for 2012's Sonata GLS. 2013 and up is only available...what the heck is going on ?

I believe the 2011 to 2014 have the same suspension design and set-up (I may be wrong), as well as the overall physical attributes for the struts for these years. So I contacted KYB to inquire if the KYB front struts for 2013 would fit the 2012, and this is their reply ;

"Good afternoon,

I do apologize we do not recommend you to use any parts not listed in our catalog for your vehicle. Please note all parts listed have been tested on the vehicle, anything not listed has probably failed some of our tests. Using a non-listed part could potentially damage any other part of your suspension and it would also void any warranty on the product. Below you may find all we offer for your vehicle......"

I am not too convinced about KYB's statement. I don't know what suspension parts that "could potentially damage any other part...."? There is no mention about the change of the car's behaviour too, so I wanted to know if anyone have experience installing a 2013 KYB struts for their 2012 GLS.

Getting an OEM struts from the dealer will cost me 1 1/2 times the cost of KYB's. Monroe or Gabriel is not an option.

I wanted to keep the cost as low and effective as possible and to keep it low, I will be the the one installing these, same as what I did to my previous cars.

Any feedback will be appreciated
